Genuinely think positions 3-8 are near impossible to predict. I think there are two huge factors that could cause a lot of deviation amongst that pack.

1) Transfer business in the rest of the window

2) Key injuries that occur in the season (Bentancur was killer for us last season)

Utd and Liverpool clearly need to bring in a top quality DM. If they fall short there I can see both having very inconsistent seasons. Question marks about two massive players in VVD and Casemiro in age drop off (we know in the PL players can fall off a cliff). Both seem to have gone a bit heavy on #8/#10 type midfielders this summer.

Both of the above and us also need better CB depth IMHO.

Newcastle look gravy but as you say CL football is a huge undertaking for a club not used to it. Same goes for Brighton and Villa, who have even thinner squads.

I actually feel quite good for us under Ange. I still hope one of Son or Richy will adapt to the striker role, with Orban as a potential x factor if he comes in. Early signs are that Udogie and Emerson are very well suited to the inverted FB roles, which is a huge difference to last season where we had no capable RWB and a knackered Perisic! We seem to have a really nice blend of CM options (our other key weakness last season). VDV also looks very promising. Also think no Europe is being massively underrated by a lot of people.

Chelsea have insane CM options now - probably 2nd to Real Madrid in the world - but still question marks over where regular goals will come from. They also have injury prone CBs and such a bloated squad for Poch to try and manage.

Pretty confident we'll be in Europe in some form next season. Anyone saying we'll be bottom half is being way too pessimistic/dramatic IMHO.
Nice analysis 👏

echo other posters. We can’t miss out on Europe again. If the Kane money has gone we’re in big trouble.

We should be in Europe. We have the quality and the money to expect to finish in the European places basically every year.

Outside of that, I don’t especially care what our league position is this year. This is the start of a rebuild - if we need to make decisions that sacrifice short-term success for long-term gain, we should. The goal isn’t to limp into top 4/5 every year, it’s to have a team capable of challenging on all fronts next year or the year after. I expect us to continue to play good football, to look better and better over time, to keep playing young talents like Udogie and VDV even if they have some bumps, and to go into next summer with a clear understanding of how Ange wants to play and where we need a couple of premium reinforcements. I’d love CL too, but this season all of those other things are more important.

I’m surprised how we have been almost universally written off by pundits to make the top 6. We face many unknowns this season, such as how we will cope without Kane. But other teams also have major question marks as others here have mentioned.

I thought Gary Neville’s comments on Monday that we will ship many goals without any explanation why a little strange. We were defensively poor last season but we’ve already changed three of our back 5 and our manager, so I’m optimistic we will do better this season defensively.

if Kane added 30 goals last season, then we’ve probably covered that loss by buying Maddison and Solomon, and reducing our goals conceded through defensive reinforcements. We, however, need some players - like Richarlison, Kulusevski, and Son - to improve significantly from last season, if we want to do much better in the league in 2024. That’s the big open question for us.

Kind've happy pundits have written us off. Means we can just do our thing with no expectations.

We'll have a lot of good weeks and bad weeks this year so a europa league place would be a good return if we finish in those positions.

We’re a top class striker and a defender away from being comfortable in the Europa league positions. Still think 5th might be hard to achieve.

I think it is really positive that we have played the way we have and got the results with our forward line largely underperforming.

I do fear as the season goes on we will be more exposed on this front though. We really need a goalscoer either by way of Richy switching on or bringing somebody in and I'm starting to be less and less convinced by Kulu (little harsh after todays goal and semi-decent performance).

I know we now have the "brick wall" of Romero and Micky but for some reason I still don't feel 100% comfortable there...I think there are much sterner tests to come than toothless Bournemouth, a United team with no striker and a Brentford team that parked the bus.

Every now and then a season like this comes along where several of the top teams drop off and positions 2-6 behind city obv could be anything. Liverpool look shaky, the chavs are a mess, United look shit and the scum are going to be way short. I said we’d finish 3rd a month ago and I stand by that. Get a top winger and cf/cb cover before the window shuts and we can really do something good this season.

Haha 1 goal contribution between them in 3 games. Join reality mate. The rest of the team is great but this front 3 is going to let us down badly

I'm sure we'll add to them and toy around...son through the middle etc

Relax
