We're nowhere near good enough for the Champions' League so I'd rather not be in it.

Maybe, but at least the Champions League has brought the best out of us at times, like under Redknapp and Poch, whereas I can’t remember us being anything more than mediocre in the Europa since Jol.

As far as Villa are concerned I think they're going 5 points ahead of us next week and if we don't claw back points from then when we play Palace and they play Luton that game away at Villa is going to feel very significant we're going to have to go there and at least avoid defeat and stand strong. If lose that one and the really will start to cut loose from us.

We can't afford to be gifting them 5 or 6 really decent chances and be coughing up a couple of goals and hope to win or even bag a point. We need to
tighten up a bit at the back and put in a real statement performance in there.

The state of this place after our first defeat in 7 games.

Bunch of fucking bed wetters. God love the people around you in your personal life if this is how hard Spurs losing hits you.

The thing is everyone starts off very reasonable in August, saying it will take time, we need to be patient, there will be ups and downs, top six should be the aim etc. The evidence is here in the early pages of this thread.

Flash forward to February, we’re two points outside of the top four and people are reacting as if it’s a disaster.

I think fans really need to be more circumspect and less reactive. You can’t really build anything if you start giving up on a project as soon as it gets a bit difficult.

It’s not about one defeat, it’s the last few home matches have been very similar and we have managed to win but not yesterday.
You need to have some sort of control in a match . Whether it’s because all our midfield are either coming back from long lay offs, had malaria or a lot of games in international tournaments, I don’t know.
2nd goal was a bit of a nightmare. Bissouma was just watching the ball, not aware of Gomes who was within a few feet of him. The original mistake for their breakaway came from poor control by Bissouma.
2 weeks till the next game should do these players good.
I get the impression that we aren’t allowed to criticise Ange because of the great job he has done.
No one is doubting what he has done but we don’t need to be conceding the same goal again and again.
Opposing teams are continually putting balls where our full backs would normally be.
Both full backs should be back for Palace. Let’s hope we are back firing as it’s Villa after that.
Thank god for Vicario.

its a strange one really - on paper I think we have the best or one of the best back 5's in the league (Vic, Porro, Udogie, Romero, and VDV), but we have let in 38 goals in 25 games, which is pretty bad.

Obviously it not all down to the defence, but the level of protection from the midfield and the general philosophy of the how the team is set up. This will get better, its early days.

but if we have to score at least 2 goals and sometimes 3 every game to have any chance of winning, we will struggle.

Early days, so let's be patient. Not even Pep, with their unlimited resource cracked it from the first season - it takes time to rewire a whole club

This is certainly not the case, whatsoever.

We are conceding far too many easily avoidable goals.

But it's about being objective. What one thought was a good target at the start of the season has likely changed by the quick progress we've made from early on, with results, style of play etc.

The melt downs after a defeat, whether it be the manner of defeat, or whatever, are over the top, over dramatic and just simply ridiculous. On here and elsewhere. We're 7 months into a transition under Ange. There's going to be bumps in the road. Just like any other club has when they are changing totally.

We're probably ahead of where a lot of us expected to be. Look at United under ETH, they're still well off where they probably expected to be. Arsenal have taken 4 years under Arteta to go from 8th to qualifying for the CL. It took Klopp 2 or 3 seasons to get back into the CL with Liverpool. Guardiola and he both still struggle at times.

A bit of perspective is needed at times, especially after a defeat. Look at where we've come from this time last season, it makes defeats like yesterday a bit easier to swallow, regardless of the manner of it.

Agree fully.

I mean let’s be honest, break away goal, we were actually all over them, pushing hard for a winner.

we do struggle to break teams down with 11 men boxed into their own box, most teams do, that’s the part of what the management team will be aware of and will be working on.

As long as we get at least Europa League that’s definitely progress and something to build on considering we didn’t qualify for Europe for this season.

6th and 7th likely to qualify for Europa League, should be doable from here.

Some criticism is obviously fair. But I tend to find a lot of the criticism is repetitive and reactive. It’s like how many times have we seen in here “Ange has been found out”, or “Ange doesn’t have a plan B” or “Ange’s teams can’t defend” or “Ange still thinks he’s in Scotland”.

A lot of these kind of comments tend to be made out of frustration and fail to take into account that Ange is just six months into his first season here. Not to mention the season has been totally disrupted by absences of several key players for weeks and months at a time.

Then we have all the comparisons to teams like Man C, Liverpool and Arsenal. Teams who who have been under the same coaches for five, six, seven or more years. Clubs who have spent considerably more than us and who’s coaches have had the benefit of multiple transfer windows and seasons to integrate the right players and implement the right systems.

It’s fine to criticise but sweeping generalisations made without context are usually unbalanced. That’s what is getting picked up on. Obviously everyone agrees we need to play better than we did yesterday or have done recently. I don’t see anyone disagreeing with that.

Not if Chelsea win the lge cup next Sunday . We get 2 places which can go to both cup comps if not in CL place. Need a Liverpool win next week and top 6 team to win the FA Cup.
Anyway we don’t need to think Europa. As long as Lenglet is in the Villa defence we can get 4th.

League cup win gets conference league spot

Europa league spots go to one in the league and Fa cup winners
If as expected we get an extra champions league spot, Europa league will be 6th and 7th next season

Unless Brighton or, god forbid, Spam win the EL, I think they then get the 5th CL place

Not sure I can cope with Poch running around with a Chelsea trophy.

United 2 up in 7 mins. 3 points behind us if/when they win this and building momentum. Annoying. Was hoping for a gritty resilient performance from Luton but clearly not today

Extreme luck for both goals. Extreme luck v Villa last week. Of which we have had zero lately.

I'm bracing myself already for a disappointing end to the season but am reminding myself that top 6 would have been a very good first season of the reset before ball was kicked and the state we were in this time last year, and it still would be bigger picture.

EDIT: rectifying fat finger syndrome
