1859: FOOTBALL - Everton defender Phil Neville on Twitter: "Rooney banned for 3 games what a joke - if it was a Dutch, Spanish, Italian, German player they wouldn't even get 1 game #fact"

LOL.

BTW, as a referee (obviously not one who's done high level games), three games was the minimum required here.

It's the right decision, however you look at it. He's a mug, the only tournament he's done well in was his 1st (euro 2004?) and he broke his foot and we went out. We should take him, bit if the team gets thru, he shouldn't just walz back in. He's let us down time and time again, great player but a complete knob.

I'd fucking leave him at home, but he would probably quite international football then.

What is the point taking him when his first game would be a quarter final where he has the history of doing something stupid again and getting sent off.

Remember the team should be stronger than the sum of its parts.

There is one certainty in this, we can not win the competition without Wayne Rooney so if we don't take him we won't win it, whether we'd win it with him I'm not sure either but without him no chance.
I heard on the radio today someone say why take him for the quarter final onward as you'd have to drop one of the players who got us out of the group stage, haven't these people ever heard of injuries? Suppose one player gets injured then we've got Wayne there ready, doesn't anyone remember 2006 when Owen got injured first game?
I am also absolutely certain that had Gerrard picked up that ban there wouldn't be half the cries to leave him at home.

Not that I really give a Monkey's about England anymore anyway.

I got as far as we cant win without Rooney. We cant win with him!

There's really no need for debate here as it's obvious what Capello will do. Rooney will make the squad and should we get out of the group stages, he will be the first name on the team sheet for the QF.

The real issue here is that a country the size of England is worried by the loss of one player that is arguably not even world class.

Rather than pointing the finger at Rooney we should be asking why we have no world class players?

Wouldnt take him... but then again I wouldnt take Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, Rio etc either. Get rid of the ego's and the 'big names' who go on autopilot during tournaments as if they are pissed off not being on the beach for the summer (yet keep getting chances, in what other job would they say 'you have failed five times, why not have another go') and get some young players who want to prove themselves.

Three match ban was harsh though, Phil Neville has a point I doubt it would be the same for other countries.

Difficult really. He is Englands best player.

When he plays without care, he is awesome. When he has stuff going on, he is shit.

Capello will take him, no questions.

he'll be needed IF England make it out of the group stages.

But that could be a big ask to be honest.

I don't think there's any doubt whatsoever that Rooney is world class. No room for debate on that one

It's a shame as Rooney is world-class and our best player.

But as gavspur has said he's only good tournament was Euro 2004 (coincidence that he had Owen alongside him who might have received all the marking?).

I was initially oh blah blah blah Uefa hate England and wouldn't have been so harsh if he's not English etc.

But upon reflection and reading this thread I agree he's a mug and Uefa would also have taken into consideration that he previously was sent off against Portugal during the last Euros.

Uefa do still hate England mind.

Then again, with the amount of ****s in our team maybe they have good reason.

I would definitely take him though and just leave Lampard at home as he's a useless turd for England.

Seconded.

Sure there is.

If you define world class as one of the players you would pick to represent the planet in their possition then it is debatable that he would get in the team. No doubt he is one of the worlds best players, but personally if I was picking a team to play against some imaginary alien football team he would not be in it.

He'd be in the 23 though yeah? ;-)

it is very unlikely England will get through their group so whether Rooney travels or not means very little
