Spurs put £40m price tag on Dimitar Berbatov

Tottenham have put a staggering £40million price on the head of unsettled striker Dimitar Berbatov - and ruled out selling him to one of their Premier League rivals.

It comes amid fresh speculation that four of Europe's biggest clubs are ready to compete for the Bulgarian, who looks increasingly likely to go under the hammer this summer.
Close friends of the prolific marksman claim this will be his last season at White Hart Lane as he seeks to join a team who can match his own ambitions and are regularly playing Champions League football.

Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with Berbatov, while United's rivals Manchester City are prepared to pay as much as £32m to clinch his signature.

But Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid and Italian neighbours AC and Inter Milan are continuing to keep close tabs on him.

Tottenham remain reluctant sellers and have a position of strength with two years remaining on his contract and a club option to extend by a further two.
:hump:

Spanish coach Juande Ramos has made it abundantly clear he wants to keep Berbatov. But if a prospective foreign buyer meets the club's valuation - which would mean a near-£30m profit on the price they paid German side Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2006 - it will provide Ramos with immense spending power to find a replacement.

Want him to stay, but we've moved on when losing World Class players before, we'll move on again.

Just sick of hearing "Will he or won't he."

A very good player though he is, I think the fans (rather like the press) overstate his importance to the team - especially whenever he has a blinding game, once in a blue moon. Yes, I'd like to keep him, but if an offer of over £25m came in for him I'd take it, as he'd sulk if made to stay, plus we need good money to rebuild our midfield to make it top 4 standard. We really don't need a repeat of the start of this season where he combined with the board (albeit unintentionally) to undermine the manager, and subsequently the team, after he didn't get his move to Man U.

I don't want him to go, but if he wants to go, well so be it and if we can get one of the continental giants to pay us big bucks, that'd be useful. Just hope we don't sell him to someone in the prem.

It's all down to Berba, we'll soon know what he wants to do.

40 million quid i would drive him to where he wants to go we need the cash for players so ramos can build a squad not a team to compete.

But it's not you making the decision. If a club made an offer of £40 million Levy would take it.

And you know this as fact, do you?

I'm not saying he won't. Maybe you're right, but I'm saying I wouldn't. I think you have to be an idiot to sell Berba for anything that's not silly money, and I don't consider £40m to be silly money for Berba.

Flatters, you don't consider the second highest transfer fee in history to be silly money?

I do. I'd be sorry to see him leave, I'd rather he stayed, saw his career out with us, leading us into a period of sustained success and became a legend in the process.

But if he had to leave, £40m would do nicely thanks.

It's an educated guess Flatters.

As much as I would hate to see Berba leave, it's a very simliar thing to the Carrick situation. Carrick wanted to leave we were offered silly money and we sold him. (IMO Carrick at the time was our most important player) Berba if he wants to leave and we are offered £40 million (that is silly money IMO) Levy will see the near £30 million profit and will sell. I am almost 99% certain of it.

It all just depends on whether he wants to leave or not. If he wants to leave, I'd accept it. If he doesn't, I wouldn't accept anything.

Obviously if Berba has said to Ramos, Comolli, Levy he wants to stay then it goes without saying that no bids would be accepted but, I personally don't believe that has or will happen.

Is that more or less of a joke that people thinking Villa, Eto'o and Ronaldinho would come to Spurs?
