I wish people could understand where we sit in the pecking order. There was someone on another thread believing we could out-bid Utd if we went head to head for a player. Now someone else believing we can poach the best players from one of the world's top clubs and ahead of all the other top clubs who'd want him.

I know it doesn't really matter, but it does illustrate why people get so unreasonably frustrated every transfer window; in their minds we're Marilyn Monroe, in reality we're Diana Dors.

Wise words as usual Sloth

That outbidding ManU thread was hilarious. They might have lost £80m this last year but a lot of that was one-off restructuring. Their underlying profit after interest payments is £40m per season, their revenue went up by another £10m and they pay their first 15 odd players an average of about 100k per week

Now this about Gerrard. The following clubs would almost certainly be well ahead of us in the queue to sign him:

1. Real
2. Barca
3. Chelsea
4. Man City
5. Scum
6. Milan
7. Inter

His transfer would be at least £30m, his weekly wage would be a minimum of £120k per week and his re-sale value will plummet over the next 2 years. Even if he wanted to leave Liverpool AND didn't want to go to any of the above AND wanted to come here we would never pay those amounts of money and be happy to lose most of the transfer fee

No we don't need Gerrard, but thats not to say I wouldn't take him. However he has the tactical dicipline is seriously lacking, and for a team with already VDV playing a sort of free role, he would cause mass imbalance to the team. Torres I would take, even with his injuries and what not.

That's exactly how I see it. Wouldn't touch Torres with a bargepole. He has admitted that the style of football here is taking its toll on his body and that he fears being a wreck in a few years.

i saw this post, thought "oh my word"... and then i saw ur rep on red.

Torres shits on all our strikers. twice the level our strikers are at apart from maybe defoe at his best who would be around 3/4 of a torres.

But he's a crock. I thought it was fair comment.

What an awful midfield that would be? We'd be going completey backwards

He'd be a great signing and we'd have a true leader amongst our ranks. It's not going to happen mind you but i'd be over the moon if it did.

He shits on them when he's fit. Match fit. He has been injury plagued for the last two seasons. And from the horse's mouth (in an interview he did last April or so), "The Premier League is such a tough competition and I have always admired this championship and the players who are here. This is my third season and I'm still amazed to see (Steven) Gerrard, (Wayne) Rooney and (Frank) Lampard, players who have been here a long time, still playing at such a high level and with such impressive rhythm because the English league really wears down a player. I just can't imagine what state I'll be in within five or six years if I continue to play here - it could easily give me problems when I stop playing. The physical level is superior to all other countries."

What colour is your coat?

i already read that comment when he said it. yes he is a crock, but so is ledley and he's still a class act. slight hint of hypocrissy if you won't take torres because he is injured for portions of the season (not for alternate games like ledley who is worse off injury wise) when he plays in the one position in our team that can easily be improved upon...

tell you what, leave mine and go get you're coat and i'll buy you a pint in a plastic cup as opposed to a glass one (i'm assuming you like things that dont get crocked) on your way out.

I'm positive signing Gerrard would make us a worse team. Not that he's not a good, almost great player, but for him to join us now and be successful, it would require big changes that surely aren't worth it.

You say he lacks tactical discipline, which is true but I think it's worse than that. VdV may rove around wildly but I don't think he ever really inhibits anyone else. Gerrard, in his messianic fervour, is prone to overshadow and impinge on other players and positions with no net gain. Last night people called for Huddlestone, but do you believe that Gerrard would have let Huddlestone sit as the deeper lying midfielder? That he wouldn't have come back to pick the ball up, essentially sitting on top of Huddlestone, causing Tom to bumble upfield?

Although, on the other hand, the England and Liverpool teams of the last few years have hardly been the ideal place for someone to be at their best. It's possible that he'd come here and behave differently, but it's equally likely that he come here thinking he was some kind of saviour and damn us.

Anyhow, the chances of us getting him are slim - although his window of opportunity to join someone like Real or Barca is closing fast, if it hasn't already - He'd probably be a better fit for Man U in a year or two, who will surely need a budget hero - if he could stomach the move.

What exactly constitues a "cheeky bid" and has one ever suceeded?
Does this mean Levy should ring pool and say" You are very poor indeed.
We will loan you O'Hara for the season and pay your lecky bill if you give us Steven Gerrard".
Is that cheeky enough?

Why on earth sould we pay £25m for Fernando Torres to sit in the medical room?

The only person happy about the transfer would be our Physio!

Dont get we wrong, fantastic player...when he's not injured! If he was a player that was injury free then i'd snap your hand off for him..however he's no diffrent to Ledley in the injury aspect.

1) 10 Bob;
2) "Dear Real Madrid, please accept £8 million quid for Mr der Vart, even though it clearly indicates that your faculties do not function effectively, Yours Sinsneerily, Mr Dan Levy"...that one worked, didn't it:grin:;
3) :hump: I would like to do it myself

by the way, this thread is rendered totally irrelevant now since hicks and gillet lost their case and liverpool will almost certainly be sold to rich suitors.

Can you distinguish between your opinions and mine? Would you be so good as to tell me where or when I've said I'm happy with the lack of continuity at the heart of our defence?

And I don't drink beer out of cups, but thanks all the same.

its a general veiw for every spurs fan that ledley should start at cb for every game because he's the best we've got even though he can't play week in week out. Torres would be the same but even better because our striking options upfront are piss poor compared to him whereas in defence we have better options when ledley cant play.

All im saying is that anyone, knowing our strikeforce, who would turn down torres regardless of his injury problems is a nutcase.

so now you don't mind things that are easily crocked? opportunity costs, opportunity costs.

Only one move for Gerrard and that is Spain. I think he has had his bests day in England for club and country.

As for Torres, world class on his day, shame that was a year or two ago, needs a good season without injuries to get back to his best.

Wouldn't touch anyone from Liverpool, we are finally ahead of them why should we go back and buy from a team sat in the bottom half? All we need is a world class striker who is on form now rather than has the potential to be.
