We are like the opposite of penny wise pound foolish. We often give the impression that we’d rather spend £50m on 3 bang average players to fill a squad than on a potential game changer.

But when we pay game changer prices we often don't get game changers. Of this lot who would you say was definitely good value? Romero. Maybe Kulu. Hopefully Maddison.

I'd be the first to put my hand up and say i'm more pro Levy than anti, but i'll also happily admit that when i see some of our transfer stuff, particularly the list of recent wing backs , it looks very very bad. Once we chose Ange, as tough as it would have been, i'd have backed out of the Porro deal , whose a good player but with no position in and Ange team. That would have bought Alex Scott and paid his salary for a couple of years.
I don't think there was a way out by the time we turned to Ange. But I do think Porro can give Kulu a run for his money this season- all is not lost.

But hang on, we paid up on Porro and Maddison - who everyone almost unanimously thought were priced correctly.

I don’t think we overpay but we don’t necessarily underpay. We’ve also accepted an offer of £12m for Sanchez - who most would say that’s low. We’re holding out for a bit more for Hoj and HK as the bids that have come in are low.

I’d love to collate the responses of the “just sell for whatever they’re offering” and the “just pay up Levy” posters to see if there’s a connection.
Oh yeah, you're totally right and my comment wasn't really aimed at someone of the level of Scott, my sights are firmly set on the CB mess (it's starting to become an obsession for me!).
There are two good options currently available, both for reportedly fair prices and yet here we are, two weeks before the season starts and still no CB.

Porro will always be an odd one because given the Conte situation, I really can't understand Levy's reason for buying him.
Maddison, I think we actually got for a bargain fee, especially considering Winks went the other way for 10m.

I'm not one to just say "oh FFS Levy, just pay up" because that's just daft on Man U levels but when we need a certain position, and there's someone available at what's a pretty reasonable price, it gets frustrating the we seem to haggle for so long.

We started the window well with two quick deals at good prices, moving on from someone (Raya) we thought was too expensive.
That was great but it now seems like we've gone back to our old indecisive, faffing ways.

If we actually have identified Tapsoba as our top target, I really don't understand why we're still dragging our heels and haven't even made a decent approach yet?

I’d love us to sign Scott.

Personally feel like we will regret it in a few years if he’s playing for somebody like Brighton and tearing it up.
We used to take punts on this sort of transfers a lot - sometimes they’d work and it’d be magical (Bale, Alli), sometimes they wouldn’t (Sessegnon), but they’re more exciting for me than dropping £60m a known quantity like Richarlison.

Scott has an extremely high ceiling, supports the Club, is home grown, has been quoted as saying his international team mate Devine is one of his “closest friends” and can play multiple positions. For me at least, it’s a no brainer and exactly the sort of player profile that we should be looking to build for the future with (alongside Devine, Udogie, etc).
Still a no brainer if the cost is 35M+? That’s a far cry from a punt. Thats one of our 10 most expensive players ever. That’s more than VdV would cost. That’s what we could have gotten Raya for. Love the idea, but we just don’t have the luxury to be making 35M punts at our most covered position right now.

I’m at an odd point when it comes to CM’s. On the one hand I’d be very happy to see us bring in young talents with big potential like Scott or Veiga, I’ve been wanting us to do it for a long time and it’s a philosophy that has worked well for us in the past.

On the other tho, even if PEH goes do we really have room for another CM. Do we actually need one?

Bentancur is supposedly a lot closer to coming back than we had assumed apparently and Devine has barely had a look in. With the resurgence of Lo Celso and the current performance of Sarr would Scott, or whoever we brought in, actually get much game time? I guess if we had Europe it make more sense but as is I’m not sure.

If we do end up with Scott or Veiga i obviously won’t be disappointed as I rate both. Part of me wonders if Scott has/will come back into the picture because he’s HG and both defenders and forward we are looking at with the Kane money aren’t. Plus we have been priced out of a move for Gallagher if they want 45-50 mil so maybe Scott is seen as a sensible HG move. But all in all I’m just not sure if it’s needed as we could just give his minutes to Devine.

Appreciate the point, £35M is steep (although when you look at the wider market, probably going rate). It’s just frustrating when you think of all of the ££ we’ve wasted on complete dross, that means we will likely miss out on one that we probably *should* be doing for the future.

Squad is completely unbalanced and our budget is constantly shoestring, which in turn restricts exciting transfers like this (that we will all lament in 4 years time when he’s out of our price range).

Chelsea have just paid nearly 25 million for a kid from Rennes, if that's a marker and you add the home-grown tax Bristol would be mad to let him go for any less than that.

I think 20-25m is probably the right price and reiterate my earlier point that you could sell Hjobjerg and buy Scott with a little bit of change perhaps. But more to the point we should be re-energising the squad with younger players like when Poch first came in and laying down a succession programme to avoid the situation where we build a bloated squad with multiple in's and out's and can't shift the deadwood. Signings like this and Phillips are what we need more of. I think Scott would also get game time initially as an impact sub but with injuries would probably get a little run.

Sissoko maybe. Berg? Not sure it’s most Boss.

GLC and Ndombele were both second choices. So was Soldado. Sanchez wasn’t our main target and if I’m remembering rightly he wasn’t even 2nd choice.

Reggy was a punt because of the favourable deal we were offered.

Romero and Porro are only instances where we went out and got our number 1 target.

Fernandes was one of them and was ready to come.
