He's inferior in all departments against Vertonghem and Alderwiereld. Is he an upgrade on Wimmer..Not sure. If he came it would be to bolster squad and I'm unconvinced he's any better than Carter -Vickers..

I'm also concert that he's not particularly quick or comfortable with the ball at his feet..

Well not all departments. He's better in the air than either of them. He's also arguably stronger. He's definitely more of an attacking goal threat as well.

This is all rather moot though. Nobody is talking about Mawson instead of Alderweireld or Vertonghen but rather as well as. We need more depth in our squad and he's already shown he can cut it in the premiership. He also has a very good attitude from what i've seen of him and would hardly break the bank. He has a lot of potential at a relatively young age for a central defender and in Poch we have the ideal manager to unlock that potential.

To me he seems a very low risk addition.

First of this rumour I've seen. He's caught my eye as a proper player and defender. Take him for Spurs squad all day long.

Crap player at a crap team, have no idea why we would want him or what he has that's makes him any better than players in our squad who currently can't get a game like CCV or Wimmer. He was part of a defence that conceded goals for fun last year and I would question the sense in taking him on a free, let alone paying for him. Why pay good money for a player who is no better than any player we have in the squad in that position and where we aren't short of numbers?

it was his first top flight season in a stuggling club who went through three different managers. Everything I've seen of him indicates that he's talented enough to slot in as Wimmer's direct replacement in the backup role. Yes, he's had a few brainfarts this season, but for a first season in the top flight I thought he did very well after Clement came in.

But he wouldn't be an option for us if Wimmer stays.

It's fairly obvious that if he were to be brought in tho it would be as a long term project. Not to be slotted in immediately in a starting 11.

Right now he is definitely inferior to Toby and Jan. But he has enough potential to become on their level at least with the right coaching
Could understand us signing a 21 year old to develop but whats the point of signing a 23 year old that doesnt look anything on CCV? We either need an experienced finished article that can play when required or just keep Wimmer.

I'd like to keep Wimmer, but I think he'll go to be in someone's first team. Haven't watched Mawson tbh, but I know watching CCV against Wycombe, I was less than convinced he's a star waiting in the wings.

And Davies has played LCB for Wales, so I wouldn't be against that either. Obviously providing Rose is fit and playing at LWB.

What this inflated market means is players who have 1 year left on their contract would go for what hw would have done last year on a longer contract which is why we would go for players like mawson and barkley

I go to a lot of Swansea games and Mawson really grew into the role of centre back leader over last season. The defence was in dissarray at the start of the year with Williams leaving and successive managers who didn't really know what they were doing - Guidolin's heart wasn't in it and Brad Bobley (as he's unaffectionately known by the Swans faithful) was really an appallingly bad coach, changing the formation and players every game, with very little defensive shape or discipline. Despite that Mawson was the best centre back in that dire first half of the season, and when Clement came in and fixed the defence they ended up conceding relatively few goals the rest of the season. Mawson is good in the air and fights for everything, and is a threat at corners. He's made some excellent saving challenges when his rather erratic CB partner Fernandez pushes too far ahead of him, but I've also seem him beaten by skill/pace a couple of times so he's not the finished article. That said he's definitely better than Wimmer and I think he'd slot into our back three pretty well (even if I wouldn't want him to be first choice in a back 4 yet). He's also a very vocal organiser and leader.

Nearly scored again from a corner against Poland U21. Nothing wrong with his header but the GK pulled off a great save.
