What if someone wanted a Spurs fan's view on Lamela and happened to ask Francis Gibbs? Or wanted a view on an early Kane and got a "Championship at best" view from someone who shall remain nameless. Or happened to ask Thinktank about Wimmer to find out he's better than Vertonghen. Don't put so much faith in the view of supporters. We all have our own agendas and biases.
I don't disagree as I have been one advocating for lets not think so highly of what other teams fans think of their best players we're buying. So I'm probably being a bit hypocritical here. Besides, I will gladly be the one to stick up for Lamela around here! I've seen both the good and bad comments and the good and bad highlights/games. Pretty much the only positive comments here are that I hope Poch can bring back this great prospect which maybe he wasn't even really that in the first place..

Must have missed that. Is it in the RO?
I think what he was saying is that if we went after Bale we wouldn't have adequate funds to improve other areas of the team. Using that as a rationalization as to why getting Bale wouldn't make sense.

It is worrying- especially with Sissoko still on the books. If Dele or Eriksen are out for some time, this kind of signing could really shit us over

Yeah lol.I wasn't saying we should get Bale instead but just saying that getting both Grealish and Gomes is disappointing.

Oh, damn. So, this might actually happen? Not sure what the point is, he's just not the type of player we need.

If it is Gomes, Im unsure as to why after the WC as per Hercs info.

Unless we have given ourselves an unrelated deadline just in case a better subject comes along.
I think the consensus is personal deadline, dependent on Barca selling/getting one of their targets which are at world cup, or marketing timing (similar to Gazzaniga and the infinite wait to announce him). One, the other, or all of the above.

It’s interesting and confusing. If we have £100 + million to spend before sales (Dembele and Toby then added to this), I’d have thought a decent WF/CM/CB would be possible. That’s not including shifting the likes of Sissoko, Vincent, N’Koudou and Llorente to add to the spend. Fuck do I know

Yeah, with an actual Valencia fan saying he'd be bad I'm now less than thrilled about this. Really think this is going to prove to be a foolish move to go "cute" at CM. It is the most important area on the field and the best teams in the world are built off the midfield. We have one absolutely incredible midfielder in Eriksen and I think he would look even better if we could partner him with a player who is even a really good level player.

Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool, all have good forward/wide players but ultimately their midfield let them down this season. This is incredibly disappointing that Poch/Levy fails to see how important this is to get right and are seemingly focused on forward/wide players. Especially when IMO I think we already have very talented players in those positions.

As posters have mentioned we have seriously lacked in the transfer window since we've become an established champions league club. With key players like Dembele and Toby leaving we absolutely have to nail this transfer window, not get "cute".

Have we lacked in the transfer window though?

Fans wanting it all and now is all this continues to smack of.

We're still not in the big league when it comes to finances or the pull of being a 'god tier' type team whether it be global clout/financials/perenial winners.

This transfer of Gomes - if it actually happens is in keeping with how Spurs have worked thus far in the transfer window and I don't see it changing, Poch said it himself.

Nothing wrong in wanting higher regarded talent, aquiring it is something else though.

In two summers we have acquired 2 no doubt good signings. Even one of those in Wanyama was great his first year and was injured basically all season this year. Davinson is obviously the other and guess what we did, we went out and bought one of the most sought after young players in the world in his position.. We didn't get cute or go for the opportunity buy. We went out, paid the price and bought an absolute stud. I personally have faith Serge and Lucas will come good but that isn't great thus far. ITK told us we could compete with all the English clubs bar the Manchester clubs so thats what I'm expecting us to do.

Really wouldn't be surprised if we got Gomes and maybe another even lesser known DM, missed out on Bale and Martial and got a relatively unknown alternative WF and just managed to get De Ligt over the line at death with Toby leaving for around 45 to 55 mil potentially to Utd.

This is probably the reality. And we'll be hoping we sell off the "bargain buys" next summer. Rinse, repeat.

We didn't spend a fortune on Vic for a start and we bought Davinson after a pretty long and drawn out negotiation. Spurs/Levy still did what was best and different ends of paying for a transfer. They added to a team that had talent. They've done that again adding a player in Lucas Moura in the January transfer window.

Not sure we have lacked in the transfer window, more a case of continuing to build a squad.

Gomes comes under that similar sort of transfer. He just doesn't fit the bill for some people because of [enter your reason here]

I'll balance this up a little, I watch a lot of La Liga football, my 2nd favourite league after the PL....Andre Gomes was an absolute joy to watch from 2014 - 2016, he's skillful, strong on the ball, can beat a man and has an eye for a pass with an excellent passing range, oh and he has a little burst of pace too...now it hasn't worked for him at Barca for a number of reasons, not the first or last player that will happen to, if Poch can bring him back to his Valencia form then I think a few will be in for a nice surprise...

I wouldn't be surprised if all that happened except for the De Ligt bit. I just can't reconcile the latest links with the Poch, Kane and others are all signing because we are going to be joining the second tier of big spenders this summer? I'm hoping L'Equipe might be right and, as a Spurs fan who grew up with exciting midfielders, that we can pull someone in worth watching- instead of a pedestrian square passer. We've got enough of them already.

Not really, the supposed signings of Grealish and maybe Gomes or similar are to add too, not subtract and thus meaning Sissoko would be able to be moved on - which would please so many considering the regular stick he took on here through out the season (rightly or wrongly)

I live in Spain and Valencia is the team I follow here. I have watched all Gomes' matches for Valencia in la Liga (10 of them live at Mestalla), all his matches in Europa league and all the matches he played in Champions League. So around 70 matches all together + around 20 matches for Portugal.

And he is NOT a playmaker. He is a ballmover; someone who makes easy simple passes (mostly sideways or backwards). For Valencia in La Liga he averaged around 55 passes a match and out of that around 7 forward passes a match.

Here is a very typical match for Gomes for Portugal:

Okay, now you're both just trying to mess with me. As someone who knows very little indeed about non-English league football, would someone please just let me have a peek at the crib-sheet and tell me what the correct answer to the "Is this lad any good?" question is?

Ta muchly,
