I noticed this in the itk thread

@Spurspanyol: French football is not my forte, I'll admit, but I would be very surprised if there's anything genuine in our link to Martial.

@jetsetyid: @Spurspanyol @paulsteedman something in it but not too much

At current rates means it's just under £12 mill, if Levy has been led to believe this kid has so much potential it does seem that it could be an attractive target for him

Whether Poch is that keen or not is another matter, although he doesn't seem the kind of guy who would throw his toys out of the pram for being given a young promising striker, I guess his only objection would be if it impacted our ability to get a target he wanted

Of course the trouble with all these rumours is that if say an English paper starts a rumour it's picked up a day or two later in the players clubs country and repeated seemingly giving it more creedence, whereas the source can be the same

I see it a lot over here when we are linked with Spanish players you think it's coming from local then read it is only repeating the Express or Mirror etc.,

Do you think he knows we've got Coulibally?

Would be delighted to sign him, although the price quoted is a bit steep. An important point, though, is that it's worth paying a bit extra for players under the age of 19, because they will count as home grown after three years.

Do you actually follow the youth teams or are you one of the fans who heard of Coulibaly as a promising striker when we first signed him and has maintained that stance ever since (not meant as a slight against you, just a lot of people bander on about the youth signings we make that make the headlines, like Coulibaly, ceballos, etc, without really looking into them afterwards). He really hasn't developed much since we signed him, and he really isn't that good compared to his age group. Coulthirst is a much better prospect and he's just gone on loan to league 2.

Would be so happy if we signed him. That is the kind of players we should be linked to all the time. We need to sign players like this.

At first I thought this rumour was total bullshit and didn't make sense, but if that 15mil fee is a release clause than it makes some sense and I can see us selling Townsend to fund the move. Which in my opinion is a very good swap to make.

I don't see why Spurs have to sell Townsend to finance this deal. There should be other ways to finance an eventual Martial deal.

Maybe there's something in it

trix on COYS

Have just heard we have been testing the waters on this one, and we are interested in him coming. Info has come via a french agent, but not Martials, so how close to the truth I don't know.

Strengths? Weaknesses? Potential? Anyone know or seen play

Having watched Monaco a decent amount last season (Falcao), here's what i know:

Strengths: He's very very quick. His finishing is also good, in the 4/5 games I saw him play a part in, he scored in one aand I don't recall him missing anything. His link up play is also decent, and he could probably do a job on the LW/RW imo.

Weaknesses: Not sure, as I haven't seen him enough, but I'd worry if he'd be able to deal with big physical defenders, and how he plays when not allowed much space tbh. Easily worked on though, so not too bad.

His potential is huge, however. People who know about Ligue 1 rate him very highly and many believe him to be the best U20 striker in the world, inc me.

I would compare him to Origi, but with more composure, but less aerial presence. Perhaps similar to Remy too, but slightly less powerful.

If he's available for 15m euros, and the club are willing to take a risk, I'd go for it. His potential is huge.

What's he done in the last year that's made his fee treble? Was he out of contract at Lille or something?
If we wanted him we should've acted then, that kind of money for what is still potential is pretty unimaginable for a club like ours. Our scouting needs to seriously improve.

We just hired Ian Broomfield back this spring. Given that man's track record, I trust any move for youth we make with him at the helm.

Yes great to have him back.
It's one of my major complaints over the years. I think we wait a year too long to look at players/or make enquiries. I'd love us to have 5-10m set aside to bring in players at 17/18 before their prices inflate.

Agree with having that money set aside (I'd say maybe even a bit more), but I think Broomfield could weigh in with his opinion on players such as this one in the amount of time he's been at the club. No doubt we'd have even expressed interest in the player without his input at this point.
