I have a bad feeling this has Isco written all over it.

A player that would truly be gamechanging for Spurs. On the verge of being completed. Doesn't happen. Goes on to have a great season and become integral to his team and definitely won't be sold the following year.

Even though this is an enormous transfer, it won't stop us from getting our other business done. We will likely still see a push (and I believe, a signing) for Ross Barkley. Foyth seems pretty close to finalization and Aurier, judicial system allowing, should happen, too. We all want to see a wide forward signed, but I doubt we are putting all of our eggs in the Martial basket. Now, if we try to make this deal happen all the way up until the last few minutes of the window and ignore other options then yes, we most likely will be screwed if we never actually get Martial.
That's my concern. We've seen it happen before with our "key" targets that we never actually get. If we sign Aurier and a WF I will happily eat humble pie, but I can't shake the feeling that we will be left with a gaping hole in the squad yet again.

We're not signing Martial. We dont have £70m to spend unless we fund with other sales. And we better not sell anyone in our first 11-13 to fund this. Martial would be a great addition but not at the cost of anyone poch actually wants like Dier and Rose. United would never sell to us w/o one of them. So its a non starter. Dont get your hopes up

So much for waiting until later in the window for transfer values to die down! That 70m for lukaku is starting to look like a steal! The Neymar deal has taken all perspective away from things. I can't believe I'm actually thinking that 70m sounds reasonable and possible for martial, but I am !!

I wonder if we will look back in this summer in years to come as the height of the bubble craziness and wonder how rational people allowed themselves to get caught up in it.

A players value should be based on their impact on the team for prize monies and gate receipts plus their merchandising value.

Now though they are being valued based on the fact their future value will be even higher. This is classic bubble territory when intrinsic value is left behind in a speculative frenzy.

Having said all that, I really hope we sign martial !!!

Tulip anyone?

I'm in the US. People have been saying this about baseball contracts for years. But the salaries just keep rising.

I really think this is going to continue. Dele Alli will be sold to Real Madrid in 2 years for over 200M.

Question is, would it be worth sacrificing Dier to get Martial?
Could be the only way to get him.

Imo it would be worth it, especially now we've got Sanchez.

Wish Spurs fans would stop casually selling first team players to a rival. Rose now Dier. We are what we are because we're not a team of individuals but a team. We've already lost one first teamer who was part of what we've built now we should be okay with losing another. Martial is class but he's not Messi or Ronaldo. No first teamer is worth losing to gain Martial, plus we'd have to replace either Rose or Dier and there's one week left of window.

For the people talking about the transfer value bubble, my comment is to remember eventually DL's organization will sell Tottenham. Big name players worth a lot to some billionaire are exactly what we want here to get good value on the sale, and we want those players to come into their prime in 3-5 years after the stadium is established. Martial fits the bill. £70m may seem like a lot but if it gets a bidding war on in the billions half a decade from now, that could be good money from a Tottenham sale stance. Not a complete thought, but I think something worth consideration in evaluating the transfer strategies.

Not sure why people are still going on about rose or diet going the other way I think we are past all that.

If we get him (big if) it will be for cash, partly raised by selling squad players like Jansen/sissoko/nkoudou

Don't bring the stadium into it buddy. Affects nothing. If we raised the money on top of the existing budget, with pending sales which is very substantial. We then can afford these 'smart' desls. Not that I advocate we will pay that, but know the mindset is there for the right player.

Cheers Hercules. I've upmost faith in Levy to be smart with getting best value out of deals, he's what he's good at. Glad and somewhat surprised about the mindset though but definitely not disappointed about that. I'd be more than chuffed if we managed to pull it off but not at the expense of losing Danny Rose.

Can we just ban all people who make one sentence statements that a transfer is either dead or wrong and offer no justification?
Anthony Martial would improve our attacking options either in the first team or on the bench. The fee would be a lot of money. We do not regularly spend a lot of money however the financial position of the club is changing. In this whacko market you could probably sell six of our players for 50 million each and Harry and Dele for north of 125 million each. Money is out of proportion in player trading. Maybe Levy is adapting, maybe Levy has secured his goal for the operation of the club and is looking to give the team a crown jewel of a squad to move in next year.
I don't think Mourinho would want to sell to us. I also don't think that a 22 year old forward with ambition wants to sit the bench behind Ibra and Lukaku for the world cup year closest to his career prime. Players are entitled and almost expected to force moves when they want them. Martial is a borderline French international and Deschamps said he is not taking players that may move. Might be unrelated might not. Mourinho's team selection will be a clue this weekend and if he is in the squad I don't think he moves. If he is not in the squad but in the stand he is probably staying. If the cameras don't find him I think the game may be afoot. not itk

Not sure that this could ever be described as a deal that is on the verge of being completed. It's a possible signing at best, surely?

Won't be many left posting on SC if the Mods do that.
