The question of Son Vs Martial is an interesting one, and does maybe raise the question of do we need Martial if he is going to cost 70 odd mil, is he that much better, maybe he will be. I'm not sure where I really sit on the Martial front, I guess for me he feels like a luxury buy when we don't have a CM. I don't particularly rate Gomes and would rather invest more money on a quality CM then Martial. Hypothetically, if it was a choice between Martial and Kovacic, I would choose Kovacic in a second. But that's just my opinion.

Aside from that, I still don't think utd will sell him to us. But I can see this dragging on till the buzzer.
Totally agree with everything you said. I'm right on board with you on Kovacic over Martial.

Problem is we might only have son for another year before he has to do national service.

Levy is a clever man, he will work out what we will have coming in from sales and what positions we need to strengthen. He is not working on deals in isolation but how they all fit together. This is why it takes time, we will be negotiating different deals at the same time and what happens in one negotiation will effect another. He is a master of it, it is why we had a net spend of zero for many seasons while still strengthening and keeping the age of the squad down. It does however mean that we will miss out sometimes or go for a cheap alternitive because we either didn't get enough from a sale or had to pay more for another target.

Both Kovacic and Martial were highly touted youngsters, who were predicted to develop into world class talents.

As yet, neither has.

But a tricky and pacy forward who can play centrally and wide, and potentially score 20 goals a season, is likely to go for a bigger fee than a creative CM.

I'd like both at Spurs.

But I think Kovacic would take much longer to adapt to Poch's demands & PL football, having spent the past few seasons largely on the bench in Spain and Italy, than Martial.

I suspect any fee will be under €60 million as any fee over than Man Utd have to share 50% of it with Monaco.

Here are the details of his contract

http://www.skysports.com/football/n...ny-martial-could-cost-manchester-united-61-5m

The document says the initial fee of 50m Euros (£38.5m) for the player is to be paid in two instalments - €20m (£15.4m) within three days of his transfer, and €30m (£23.1m) on July 1.
There are then three further potential payments - €10m (£7.7m) if the player scores 25 first-team goals for Manchester United, €10m (£7.7m) if Martial makes 25 appearances for the French national team and €10m (£7.7m) more if the player is ever nominated for the Ballon d'Or award.
There is also a sell-on clause inserted in the deal, with Monaco due to be paid 50 per cent of any transfer fee between €60m and €100m United receive for the player.

FYI hes scored 24 goals for Man Utd and has 18 caps for France so in that respect if he's not a first choice player and wants to leave then Man Utd would probably be keen to sell him. 1 more goal costs the £7.7 million!

We aren’t putting this much effort and money into a player whose primary role is to play backup to Kane.

You might have to point out where I said that?

FWIW, I think Llorente/Janssen would have played more in an adapted formation that included Kane (as they both have at some point) if they weren't so shite.

Martial is more capable of playing the fluid role that Lamela often has, in a transient role of winger/striker that changes throughout a game.

As much as I love Son I honestly think that Martial has the potential to be one of the top players in Europe and would be an amazing signing for us.

What? You referred to us signing him as a striker (where he played for Monaco), and said he’d primarily be a Janssen/ Llorente replacement. That’s exactly what you said.

"but is versatile enough to play in the same team as him."

C'mon, if you're going to quote it least read it ;)

I think you're right but this bears all the hallmarks of one of our 'We tried but just couldn't get it over the line' deals. Utd will take great pleasure in pulling the rug out from under us at the last minute.

the thing is I believe we are strong on our left side, Son, and eventually Moura. On our right we don't have a player that gets 5-10 goals yet with Son we have a player that gets 15-20. Ok we have the problem he will be playing in the Asia Cup, and if they don't win that he is then set for national service (anyone know when that has to start by?)

I love Lamela, but really not enough end product. his strengths are his closing down, but his weaknesses are 1 footed and a red card waiting, once he picks up a yellow his main strength disappears.

I know if Martial signs we could play Son off the right, but feel he is stronger on the left

Put a link or quotes in the "what opponent fans are saying about us" thread.

Just some highlights from recent pages, but I'm sure there's stronger reactions a few pages back

More strong 'rumours' (but really more than that) that Martial has visited the Spurs training centre and come away much impressed.

I mentioned this earlier in another thread - lots of scoffing was the predictable response, and I expect more so now to this post.

So, scoff away, but ….

Might well be true. It doesn't really change the fact that we, like yourselves with Aldeweireld, have no real reason to sell him unless we get a good price, regardless of how much he liked the Spurs training ground canteen.

Spurs are legends.

Sorry for what they have made you go through; that posting on a United forum about how your facilities may be better, according to some shit rag/hearsay, is the best way you can get your jollies.

I think you got confused with the news that Tony the Fire Marshal was at the training centre on a routine safety inspection.

Would Martial really want to go to Spurs? He wants game time but it's a backwards step in terms of his career and if he killed it at Spurs, he's looking at another 3 years or so before he can move again and have a crack at the big time. To make this move he needs to accept that it's a huge risk and he might never get back to one of the elite clubs again.

I'm sure he'll want a move to Juve or PSG as a priority. If he failed there then Spurs is the best sort of move to make.

Report Spurs for tapping up Martial then.

Appreciate the ITK, although I'm mystified and skeptical as to how Martial was able to visit our training ground. As far as I understood, that kind of visit would only be sanctioned by the selling team if negotiations were at a fairly advanced stage.

In fairness, I suspect that if United have truly come around to selling the player, the market is not what United would hope. I think the teams that could be a serious threat for Martial's signature could probably be counted on one hand. I would be shocked if he went back to Monaco. I can't see any other Italian or French team submitting a serious bid besides Juventus, given Inter's troubles . Although, I do wonder if Juve and Inter try to tempt Mourinho with a player like Mandzukic or Perisic and gain an advantage that way. Bayern also have some players they could offer. But the bottom line is that Martial would be a record transfer for both Juventus and Bayern, and its hard to see how he cracks the starting XI at either team unless player(s) move in the other direction.

The thing I'm watching for is if press links between United and Perisic or Mandzukic pick up. That, to me, would make Italy more likely than North London.

Surely Moura would be on the right? He's not played on the left iirc for us at all.

Glaston is an idiot. Why go on another teams forum and tell them we've been tapping up your player?
Dunno. Mostly their reactions are brilliant though, as it's probably the first time they've experienced losing a player they seem to rate and would prefer to stay to a team they look down their nose at.

Thinks it more losing him to us another english club. Most of their fans rated ronaldo before he left.

with Maura being predominantly right footed and Poch preferring inverted wingers I think if we don't sign Martial and will be missing Son due to the Asia Cup, we will see him on the left
