10 million for a unproven youngster from Brazil is a big, big gamble. It could take a couple of seasons before this guy settles in. We really need someone who can do the business right now.
Anyone we get is going to be "unproven" in most people's book. If he is good enough for the best football team in the world, he is good enough for me.

In that case Lucas is good enough for you, because he plays for Brazil? If you ask Liverpool fans what they think, they will tell you he's crap.

Tim Vickery was asked by a Spurs fan what he thought about the potential move for Sandro:
I think it could be a move too soon for his club! Inter have a fantastic production line, and make no bones about the fact that they will be selling their best players, but I'd imagine they'd want to hang on to him for a bit longer - say til the end of the Libertadores next August. There's also the World Youth Cup coming up in a few weeks - he captains the Brazil side - so that's a good shop window. Money talks, though, so we'll see. I think he has a really bright future - I picked him out in World Soccer magazine as one of the stars of the show in the South American Under-20s at the start of the year. He's a tall, holding midfielder, mobile, passes well, perhaps still to develop his defensive awareness. I've been expecting him to be fast tracked into the senior Brazil squad for a while, so wasn't too surprised when he got a call up last week after another midfielder pulled out injured.

If its true then I sincerely hope he is the world class CM that we need to compete for the Premiership title.
I really think that is the missing link for this team!

I like your optimism but please. If you think that we are one CM from challenging for the league you need your head testing. Lets try and finish fourth first!

Just got an email from my journo mate it Brazil - not much, but here's what he had to say

Sandro was called up for Brazil's squad in the last two internationals as replacement for Josue. Came on as a sub against Chile and did fairly well. Has got some rave reviews of late but would have to reserve judgment about how well he would fit the needs of Spurs. But playing with the likes of Nilmar and D'Alessandro at Inter should help him a lot. Inter is worth a good shot of the title. 16 million sounds a lot for a player who is only just moving to the fringes of the national squad.

He won't be playing with Nilmar though as he moved in the summer to Villarreal

Yep and kind of makes the stuff people were coming out with before about our midfield/team being as good as or even better than Man utd's look even more ridiculous.

Whoever it is, we really need a fourth option in central midfield.

With a name like Ranieri he must have some Italian origin so would he even need a work permit if he could say get an Italian passport ?

It'll be closer to £20mil

Are you sure? There was quite a bit of ITK in the window suggesting the fee was a lot lower than being quoted. One ITK suggested that it was Reals rather than sterling (i.e. around £6m).

Pretty sure that he has no claim to an Italian (or Portuguese) passport. ITK suggested that we were concerned about the work permit although there are precedents for young players with 'outstanding talent'.

A lot of Brazilians of Italian descent try the Italian citizenship scam; this, I was informed by my brother-in-law (who is Brazilian) may well be why we had to loan Defendi out to Udinese—it turned out his Italian 'passport' wasn't quite as kosher as we'd been led to believe.

Think you might have it there. The Brazilian season ends in December IIRC.

As for other indications - didn't Redknapp himself actually say towards the end of the window when the entente with the club was announced that this transfer wouldn't get done until January?

Redknapp said something like 'Levy is negotiating that one'. I'll try and find the quote, it was from the Mail.

It was the telegraph:

and added that Spurs are themselves interested in signing the Brazilian midfielder Sandro who would cost £16m from Internacional.
However, Redknapp added he did not expect the deal to be concluded this month.
“It’s a possibility down the road,” Redknapp said. “I would need to speak to the chairman to see where he is at (with the deal)."

Tottenham face a battle trying to prise Sandro away from Internacional de Porto Alegre.
Spurs sent a delegation to Brazil in the final weeks of the summer market to sign Sandro, but even with a bid of £17 million, it was thrown out by Inter's board.
This week, Sandro has signed a new deal to 2014 and had a £30 million buyout clause inserted into the agreement.
