Are there any Heurelho Gomes doubters left?

Don't remember Villa but at Fulham the ball just seemed to hit him akwardly. He could have done better but it wasn't down to poor decision making as you might see with David James for example.

Unlike against Udinese.

Oh dear I fear we are going over old discussions but the debacle at Fulham came on the back of the Fulham manager seeing what a liability Gomes was, stated what Gomes weaknesses were and actually had his side training leading up to the match to exploit those weaknesses which they did successfully.
He was poor, people had various reasons as to why he was poor, nerves, settling in, injury, not used to the prem, lack of confidence but as I said at the time hopefully he would improve with a good goalkeeping coach a la Tony Parks and guess what? He did.

Given immensely overrated imo.

Good reactions, and a good shot stopper. That's about it. He doesn't command his defence anywhere near well enough, doesn't command his area, he's very poor at dealing with crosses, and without having the World class streak in him that Gomes has, he still makes the unforced errors.

The Actim Index GK List so far for this season:
1 Petr Cech Chelsea 13 388
2 Brad Friedel Aston Villa 31 331
3 Jose Reina Liverpool 35 323
4 Mark Schwarzer Fulham 40 306
5 Joe Hart Birmingham 42 305
6 Shay Given Man City 44 303
7 Paul Robinson Blackburn 48 295
8 Manuel Almunia Arsenal 49 294
9 Tim Howard Everton 60 281
10 Brian Jensen Burnley 66 267

The first set of numbers if how they rate in the overall ratings in every position

This will stand as Proof for Time Eternal that there are lies, damn lies, and Actim Index statistics.

Brian Jensen better than Gomes.:rofl:

Best belly laugh I've had in days.

Gomes is as good as, if not better than Given, and superior to the rest of that list.

Who are the "professionals" who are making these Actim judgements? I can only imagine it's ex-pros so stupid that they can't even get a job standing with a microphone on bitterly cold terraces at grounds like Darlington, waiting for Jeff Stelling to take the michael out of them on Soccer Saturday.

Before watching him week in week out like I do now, I was convinced Given was the best keeper in the land.

But claims he doesn't command his area and is weak at crosses are bang on.

Not in anyway to refute your statements, and not to make exxcuses for him, but I wonder if the participants of this 'Given-Bash-Fest' debate are aware of how tall he is. My brother has been a season ticket holder at Saint James's since the early 90s (he went to Uni. on that forlorn frontier outpost of civilisation:grin:), and when Given first broke into the Barcodes team he told me that he was going to be one very good 'Keeper - the only thing that could possibly hold him back, he said, was that he's a bit of a midget. Can't remember his exact height, but I think it was 5:10 - not terribly short, but pretty unusual for a 'Keeper.

Ah Given is a good keeper, but Gomes is better. I don't for one second think Given is poor, he's done well with Toure in front of him most of the season that's for sure.

Given, however, has been so solid for our wee country for the last, must be nearly 10 years now, and I don't look forward to his retirement if no one comes through in the near future.

1.87 metres = 6.1351706 feet

That's his height apparently. I have spoken to a few people who have met him, they have all been surprised that he isn't short.

I met him a decade ago at a Northumbria Uni open day & he's roughly the same height as me, maybe an inch or two shorter - I'm pretty much bang on 6ft. I may be wrong but I was stood within a handshakes' distance & he seemed about my height.

Nice bloke as well & my mate obviously liked him as she went all 'girly' when he spoke to her... She's now married a guy named Paddy so perhaps its a celtic thing...

Yeah but you were in 6" heels so the confusion is understandable.

There's a guy who sits behind me who still hates Gomes, refers to him as Coco the Clown.

Given has always been a good 5 times the keeper Gomes is imo.

I rate him, Friedel, VDS, Reina and Cech over him, possibly even Schwarzer too, yes Schwarzer. These guys have been inspired goalkeepers in the Prem for years.

I also think we missed a trick in not getting Jussi on a free a year ago as competition.

Oh dear, not very precise. But that would make him 5: 10 or 5:11, which is how I heard it. RMY, that is quite a difference (2 to 3 Inches) maybe you are right, but I really don't see why my brother would say something like that if it wasn't true, and I'm also pretty sure I have heard commentators commenting (conveniently enough) on his surprising lack of height. our quoted height doesn't seem to equate SelbYido's testimony, oranything I've heard, are you sure your source is accurate?

I'm 5'11. He's taller than I am... A good bit taller too. So 6'1 as someone suggested on here sounds about right.

In terms of the latest save % for EPL games this season, Gomes (80.3%) ranks 2nd in the league amongst all the regular keepers, only behind Friedel (80.9%). They're just about the only 2 keepers that made it past the 80% mark.
