We all love the transfer window, particularly the summer window. No football to worry about, ITK-a-plenty, and the delight that is the human yo-yo Mr. Pink. Having kept an eye in a number of the threads in the Transfer Rumours forum, and watching the ITK plod on the same thing seems to keep coming up. In fact it's not even that it's just happening this year, it's the same kind of comments we've had for the past few seasons. Many seem to be saying that we're approaching the first games of the season without the players we needed. We're under-prepared and under-equipped, we're not ready.

This refrain seems most prominent surrounding the transfers of Mateo Musacchio, and to a slightly lesser degree, Morgan Schneiderlin. The outcry is that yet again we are left going into a new season hamstrung by our 'penny-pinching' chairman as he tries to extract the best possible deals for key players to all we might hope to achieve. Some go as far as stating that in Levy's mind the first three games of the season before the window shuts are write-offs. These people love to point back to past seasons where we've made deals at the end of the window and dropped points in those opening games (these people's favourite part is when they point out that we missed out on CL football in those years by a mere matter of points, the very points we dropped in those opening games. All Levy's fault). This season though appears different.

Coming out of last season the most obvious change that was needed was a new head coach. Someone with a clear attacking approach that would be able to be translated from tactics board to the pitch. Someone who could unlock the untapped potential of a squad that had finished just points off it's highest points total ever in spite of the management over them.

After that, it was clear that we needed a minimum of two players to come into the playing squad. A left back had been needed for a year after Benoit Assou-Ekotto's shipping off to QPR, and a younger, more comparable back up to Lloris was needed to take the place of Freidel.

Having appointed Mauriccio Pochettino as head coach, and signed Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea, I want to argue that we are infact ready to go this season. We have a man at the helm who appears, at least by his successful tenure at Southampton, to be able to install a clear positive mentality to a football team, and quickly. In Ben Davies we have signed a very competent left back who will hopefully not only himself improve, but push Danny Rose to rediscover some of the form that had Sunderland fans wishing they could sign him permanently. One of the biggest plus sides to this transfer isn't that Danny Rose won't play anymore (he's not as bad as most of you make out), but rather it means that no longer will one injury see our best centre back shoved out to left back. Less than two seasons ago Michel Vorm was viewed as one of the best 'keepers in the league, and now we have him as a backup. He ticks almost every box in terms of what we could have hoped for in terms of a backup for Hugo, and hopefully now the team can comfortably play one system regardless of who is in goal.

People seem to think that without the signings of Musacchio and Schneiderlin Pochettino will have been shafted by Levy. But if you take even a moment to look at how well stocked we are in both central defence and midfield then it's quite clear that neither of these transfers are as imperative as many make out. We will not be screwed if neither transpires, and we won't even need to go scrabbling around to find alternatives. In fact, as far as things stand, we're probably over-populated in each of those positions. With Vertonghen, Kaboul, Chiriches, Dawson, and Dier, we have five good centre backs. If two go, we'll need another. The same is probably true of the midfield and Schneiderlin.

All in all, I'd say that in fact we are ready. The head coach has been backed in the transfer window with the players that he needed. I don't think that no more signings means Pochettino hasn't been backed. We got what we need quickly and with relatively little fuss, and if anything else is to happen it is a bonus. We should have a squad that is relatively settled, and potentially adding one or two even after the season has started shouldn't impact us negatively at all.

Hopefully that's some food for thought, are we better placed than we think?

Are we ready?

I think Pochetinno knew that the squad would not be getting a massive overhaul, and is prepared to work with what he has. In that sense we are ready. We've certainly been in worse situations so comparatively speaking we are in tip-top shape.

Not as ready as West Ham will be, simply due to number of players that were at the WC. Also factor in the change of style (for the better) and we could've done with a couple of extra weeks.

I think we are, I actually thought we played well for the most part against Schalke with a couple of our WC players still to come in, so that bodes well. I also saw more defence splitting passes in that one game than in the last two seasons.

GK - sorted
LB – if MP picks Davies sorted, if picks rose, same issues as last year will arise
RB - 1st Choice injured = naughton - not sorted
CB - Kaboul – looked fit during pre-season – sorted for now
CB – JV – Yet to play a pre-season game but still class – sorted
CM1 – Capoue – seems the most likely to start as played all pre-season bar last weekend – sorted
CM2 – Take you pick from a hand fall of players (paulinho, holtby, bentaleb, dembele, sandro) – not sorted
LWF – Lennon or Townsend – lennon on pre-season form – sorted
AMC – Eriksen – hasn’t really done much in pre-season but its eriksen – sorted
RWF – Lamela – most impressive player in pre-season, fingers crossed he translates this into league matches – sorted he hopes
CF – Soldado/Ade – based on both players being fully fit ade starts but given his lack of pre-season, soldado will probably start – sorted again, he hopes….
Overall far from the finished article, which always seems to be our problem, too many questions marks with the first team, with players bound to come in and out between now and end of the month.

im guessing he might use the UEFA matches to effectively run two teams (one for league, one for cups) for the first few weeks, with many of the late returning players in the UEFA team. By week 3 most should be at similar fitness levels and there might be a few new faces too so the starting team for the league will probably look quite diffrent by mid-September.

I agree in terms of fitness and things, some players won't be ready, be that injury or World Cup. I'm not really concerned about that though as it was unavoidable. I was more addressing the makeup of the squad in regard to transfers.

Unless we sign a top draw striker, IMO we will struggle with Soldado, Kane and Adebayor... I just have this doubt in my head, and hope I'm proved wrong

Concerned with the defence, because of injuries/WC commitments. If everyone was available then yes we would need to look to upgrade but we would still be solid. Currently are very patched together though and in the scary situation of relying on Kaboul to stay fit for the first few weeks.

Maybe Kaboul has shown that he will?

With his record though... If we lost him things are looking pretty scary with Walker, Dawson, Chiriches and Vertonghen missing.
True, though I think the Chiriches issue is more that he's actively trying to be sold than he's injured. Think that would be a shame. I think Vertonghen will be fit for Saturday. You are right though if there are long term injury concerns over any of them then I guess we'll look to do something else. I don't think it's imperative that it happens though.

Think we are ready to give any of the big boys a fright, but we're not yet ready for a sustained drive for a top 4 placing. Poch will need time to fine-tune the squad and tactics.

In my opinion some fans are never or will ever be satisfied. If we were to sign Messi and he was to have a slow start, they would still moan. I for one am satisfied with the manager and squad (even without any further acquisitions) and cannot wait for the new season to start. I honestly dont begrudge the Chelseas and Liverpools of this world, neither do I fear them. And don't you think other fans are looking at our club with discrete envy? Lighten up and enjoy the ride!

Good post and I agree with alot of the points you make.

Whether it's here or on other sites, or even out and about when chatting to other Spurs fans and neutrals alike, they have also pointed some of the blame at Levy failing to bring in Schneiderlin but if everyone looks at it, Southampton sold of the majority of their core from last season and were left with Schneiderlin and Rodriguez and at the time of clear Tottenham interest it was their chairman who then turned around said "We won't be selling anymore players before the start of the season". That alone shows it's not Levy at fault. Yes, if we were interested right at the start of the summer then that could be viewed differently but Lambert had already gone, Lallana had publicly stated he wanted to join him at Scouseland and Shaw was nailed on for a Man U transfer so at that stage the Southampton board / fans already knew their 'star' players were already jumping ship so if we had come in early, I still think they'd have played silly buggers with either Schneiderlin and / or Rodriguez mainly due to the fact of Pochettino being here, so again, is that really Levy's fault?

I've said several times that at the start of last season that alot of fans were pleased with our business in the summer of 2013, except for Bale leaving and our failure to have a more reliable backup for Lloris and a LB. As Nicdic highlighted, we now have these backups which means we can rotate players in their natural / best position. Added to that we have the years transitional / adjustment period for not so regular players such as Chadli, Cheriches, Capoue along with of an ever-improving Eriksen, a more confident and fit Lamela and our little 'Bobby', Soldado, who's work rate and movement in pre-season again shows the quality he has and hopefully a revitalised Paulinho! (Hmmm)

On top of this, if we have a happy Vertonghen, a fit Sandro, Walker, an ever-reliable Dawson and Lennon and a motovated Adebayor (we can hope) along with some of the decent youngsters, Kane, Bentaleb, Dier, I am once again in the position to say the same as last season and think that as a whole we have a great squad who just need someone to bond them together and get them playing to the best of their abilities and using Southampton as an example, that showed what he could do with a team of lesser players to what he now has.

So, are we ready? I really do believe we are, even if we don't add any players.

Still concerned at the lack of passing ability in centre midfield; it hamstrung us under AVB and Sherwood and unless fixed, whether through transfer or promotion, will hamper us under Pochetino. Nor am I entirely sanguine about centreback choices.

Generally a new manager only begins to make a lasting imporvemetn once he is able to begin re-shaping the squad; to date we have bought in three players, none of whom are likely to be starters. I am not expecting a lot this season, but nor shall I be judging Poch on this season.
