del Nido told us to spin on it in the summer.

Apart from which, he'd be neither a loanee or a freebie.

all points valid but irrelevant as Ramos has gone. Capel i'm sure would rather peel off his own skin than come to Spurs.

I should submitt that idea to the writter of the Saw films.

Here is an article stating it as a reason why he can't move to Juve at the moment:

Interesting that Poulsen is regarded as a flop. Interesting also that Appiah was regarded as nothing special in his first spell with Juve.

Given that Serie A coverage in the UK has been pretty fragmentary and that of the Turkish league non-existent as far as the general public is concerned, upon what are people basing their belief that Appiah would be A Good Thing? Internationals? FM?

Indeed it would. However, I'm still not happy with having a right footer on the left. As good as Arshavin is, its gonna have to be a lefty for me I'm afraid.

But Utd rarely play with a left footer on the left nowadays with Giggs not as heavily involved. Chelsea dont often play a left footer on the left wing either, with Malouda being more of a squad player. Ashley Young is a right footed player on the left for Villa. Man City use the right footed Robinho on the left. I dont think Everton play one either with Arteta playing in from that side. Portsmouth have a right footer out there with Kranjkaer.

So its not really that natural to use a left footed player on the left wing in the Premier League now. As long as we have a proper left footed fullback which we have 3 of now (Bale, Ekotto and Gilberto instead of the right footed YP Lee,) then i dont see a problem here. Especially for someone with the talent of Arshavin.

I'll wait for someone more knowedgable to answer that, although my suspicion is that we can't play more than three non-EU players in any domestic matches.

However, Gomes & Modric definitely needed work permits. I would assume Corluka also needed one as a Croatian, and surely Pav needs one.

Which makes four. Can anyone throw light on this?

PS I'm pretty sure Gio has triple nationality: Mexican, Brazilian, and Spanish because of his many years in Barca's academy. Whilst I believe Gilberto has German second nationality.

According to FM.

We can play any number of non-eus that have a work permit.
Some leagues, like the Spanish and the Italian leagues have a limit of non-eu players to play, but they don't have the same work permit regulations we do.

Isn't Bingy the most hilarious poster? I love reading a Bingy post? Sentence? Another sentence? Another sentence with random punctuation?

What was this thread about, again?

It was better when he used to write in an Irish accent.

I think he was regarded as "nothing special" by Capello who wanted to play with 2 DMs. Prior to Capello he had a very good season and was the main reason why Edgar Davids left. At the time Serie A was probably the most broadcast European League, so he was a well known player. I don't think there are question marks regarding Appiah's ability. But given he hasn't played league football in over a year, there are definite questions about his fitness and whether he will be able to regain his form.

We're one of the few countries where there are no restrictions on who can play. The only qualification rules in the English league pertain to work permits.

Essentially this means that an English team can field any number of EU players (or players holding an EU passport) who do not need a work permit and any number of non-EU players who have gained a work permit, the qualification rules for which are:
  • Appearing in at least 75% of international games over the last two years
  • The player to come from a country in the top 70 of the FIFA rankings

Jondesouza - thanks for clarifying! And Bobishism too.

So, as long as Appiah was granted a UK work permit, we could play him, Gomes, Luka, Corluka & Pav in the same team.. Hmmmm

http://sport.setanta.com/en/Sport/News/Football/2008/11/17/Premier-League-Appiah-on-Spurs/

Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has welcomed Fifa’s decision to rule that he is a free agent, but the former Fenerbahce midfielder is adopting a cautious stance over claims that he could now move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Appiah has been linked with a move to The Premier League for a number of months but an acrimonious contract wrangle with Fener threatened to put his career on ice for some time as the Turkish side were demanding a transfer fee despite the player leaving the club in August.

Fifa has now ruled that Appiah is indeed a free agent, again opening up the possibility of a transfer to England, and reports have indicated that Newcastle, Middlesbrough and West Ham will all have Appiah watched in Ghana’s friendly against Tunisia on Wednesday.

But Tottenham could also be a possible destination for the experienced midfielder as manager Harry Redknapp made no secret of his interest in Appiah when attempting to sign the former Juventus star for Portsmouth earlier in the season.

“I'd love to sign Appiah and we are interested in him but it's going to be tough to get him,” said Redknapp in September.

“There are a lot of clubs chasing him, clubs like West Ham and Arsenal, and I’m sure Juventus will want him back as well.

“He's a terrific player for somebody on a free. I've asked about him in the past and I watched him plenty of times when I was looking at Sulley Muntari and they played together for Ghana.”

Redknapp later admitted that Appiah’s wage demands would rule Pompey out of the race but he now has greater resources at his disposal at Spurs and a combative midfield presence would certainly not go amiss at White Hart Lane.

Appiah has refused to speculate on a move to North London but is keen to resume his club career in the immediate future.

“We will see,” he said to KickOffGhana.com when asked about possible interest from Tottenham.

“I want to get back playing week in, week out as quickly as possible so I can understand why people are worried. But I don’t need to be in a rush because this is a huge decision.”

surely for a free he would be a good option - get him in for the rest of season with an option for another 2-3 years at the end of the season. If he has faith in himself he'd take an option like that because he would feel he'd definately get a new deal at the end of the season. Only problem would be we could lose him at the end of the season to another club if he plays well but thats a risk worth taking

Not sure if I've actually posted this anywhere, but I do know it's been on my mind a fair bit lately.

Watching his game, I think we should play Bale as a traditional left winger who can make inroads into midfield and towards goal and cross the ball from the wing, and not in a defensive role at the back. He has speed and flair and can put in a good shot too and really looks uncomfortable in his present position. I know he's currently out of form but this could really work for him and for the team.

I think Harry reads this forum as my suggestions to use players stuck in the reserves and to give as yet untried youngsters pitch time and experience are already happening. Perhaps he'll see this suggestion and act on it! :)

Agree. For me Bale has always looked better for us playing left wing rather than left back. For Wales he usually plays wing back which is ideal for him but obviously that would mean we have to change formation! He needs his confidence back and i reckon he would achieve that playing out wide. Worst game in a Spurs shirt against Fulham

Foster and Appiah would be free/loan transfers!

Obviously goalkeeper, central midfield and possibly left back are positions we need to bolster.

The mentioned would fill 2 of thos problem positions, wouldn't mind seeing us try and sign Stephen Warnock for LB
