This is another of those summers when Daniel Levy, Tottenham Hotspur's combative chairman, may have confused football with a high-stakes poker marathon in which brinkmanship is the finest of all life's thrills.

I think that's pretty good.

Actually I thought it pretty much summed up what has been happening of late and also over the last few transfer windows, however I wouldn't be a suprised if the author is a mate of 'Arry's to be quite honest.

Levy is a businessman running a business, it's too much for some people to comprehend. All this bullshit about football being different from other businesses is just that, bullshit.

When it comes to running a plc the size of Tottenham there are few journalists let alone sports ones who have any idea to reasonably comment on how he goes about it.

I agree entirely from the business point of view - without doubt. Just suspect that we don't deviate it from that prudence/ruthlessness when we should at times - with in reason of course ie taking a loss somewhere to make a gain somewhere else.

Sounds stupid really, and it is, because nobody has the information at hand in which decisions are based on.

I'm very pro Levy by the way, just thought the article would stimulate some debate.

I totally understand that you posted it for debate.

The part in bold above this is the key point, nobody has any idea about the discussions that take place between clubs, players and agents. Levy has done really well to get Adebayor and whatever their contribution is to his wages nobody knows how those negotiations went and at what point it did become financially acceptable to the company. This can then be passed on to the other transfer business that we do, both in and out.

The problem is that people believe all this total made up ITK bullshit in the press, on Talksport, on the tv and most embarrassingly of all on this site. Discussion and debate is great but when people start believing this bollocks and passing it off as fact then it really is cringeworthy.

Where I do feel sorry for Levy is that his manager has continually undermined him in the media all summer, Redkanpp unfortunately is a media whore and should be banned from all media activity apart from pre and post match interviews and official club press conferences.

The rags won't be able to profit much longer by employing generalists to write articles with way less understanding than an average fan on a club forum. It's already pretty absurd.

It's a ridiculous article written by Hayward, who has virtually no knowledge of the machinations of our or those other clubs transfer dealings.

The stuff about ManC identifying their targets and doing business early is the sort of thing that fuckwits say on internet forums, completely oblivious to the reality that ManC can do this because of their financial position - it's fucking easy to do your business early when you can offer the selling club double what the players worth and offer him three times the salary he's worth.

Hayward makes no attempt to rationalise a transfer policy that has seen a club with a 36k capacity ground that has to generate it's own sustainable revenue and compete financially with some of the biggest and richest clubs in Europe.

If he is asserting that Levy is a poor businessman who has somehow failed in the running of the Club for this reason, then it is more a case of shit for brains sherlock.

It is not a bad article but it is speculative. Who knows what Levy's real motivations are; only the man himself can know that.

However, you do wonder sometimes when you hear stories of haggling over what seems in the context of football today peanuts.

On the other side, financially Spurs are healthy and that is despite continual improvement under Levy's stewardship. So clearly, whatever Levy is thinking/doing, it has worked and why shouldn't it work in future?

Those who think a steady rise to the top never has dips and periods of consolidation are sadly mistaken.

I guarantee you Liverpool cannot spend at the same rate in the coming seasons. If we spend steadily and sensibly in the long term we will be better than most teams.

I think he's posted what a lot of people on here have been saying for years

Paul Hayward is hardly clueless and I'm sure he's open to a lot of information we don't hear.

Levy's brinkmanship has set us back before for everyone with short memories
