As a player he is right up there with the best of them

If he's underappreciated it's because he's clearly a complete pillock, not because of his footballing ability.

Having said that, I never hold missing a spot kick against people, shit happens in shoot-outs, even if Cole's penalty was very poor. Then again, you can argue that the worst possible penalty on target is still better than the best possible penalty off target.
