Ashley Cole; under-appreciated?

I would argue that only Gerrard and Cole are world class players for England, Rooney has flashes of great play but I really think he is overrated. I speak as an impartial Ulsterman. Cole is a truely world class player in his position, I dont think there can be any doubt about that given the consistent level of performances he has had for England over the years. With regards to Terry all I see is a guy who is capable of great looking last ditch challenges trying to save a goal after (usually) his own mistake/lack of pace being exposed.

Quality left back. Not spectacular like Carlos but pretty much the perfect all round modern day full back. Massive tosser though.

Ten years ago I was working with a lovely (but not the most intelligent) girl who hung out at all the in-places at weekends. One day she came in, sat next to me and said "aww, that Ashley asked me out again, but he's so shy and boring". We were like "is that the Ashley who was playing for England last week?". She also met Ledley and Jlloyd Samuel (whose now playing in Iran!!!) a lot, and Sean Davis (in his Fulham days) used to ring her up and ask her out (she'd often ignore his phone calls).

By all accounts Cole wasn't a bad lad then. Can't say what he is like now.

He played for Arsenal and Chelsea - he won shit loads since, good decision.
He left Arsenal because he wanted more money - everyone here would leave for more money.
He cheated on his wife - it's quite a common thing and we know nothing about what happens behind closed doors.
He shot a young lad with an air rifle - lads will be lads, happens with lads getting together.

He doesn't like to be interviewed, and admits that he isn't comfortable in that situation, he says he is literally just a normal lad.

I've met him before, surprised at how 'normal' he actually was, similiar to Ledley actually, could be seen down the pub with his mates having a laugh.

I laughed when i read Shanks's comment. I often get together with my mates but we dont shoot people.

Completely agree. Way past his best, even Liverpool fans know it. Cole has been consistently very good for club and country for years. One incident sums him up though. Do you remember him turning his back and showing his name to the ref when he was getting booked at the Lane about four seasons ago - what a dick. If the ref had any balls he would have shown him two yellows and sent him off.

Terry is great on the ball and completely two footed; you dont get to play for one of the strongest squads in the world for 10 years if you were shit. As for Cole, he was a striker at Arsenal before he converted to LB and he is excellent on the ball.

Cole isnt married btw. Some of you need to stop letting your emotions cloud your judgement. I think Terry is absolute scum and so are his family, but he's a tremendous footballer.

Best laugh i have had in a long time, John Terry World class? He has spent the last few years being babysat by players around him due to his many faults. Cavalho and Cole to mention two, Cole was known for his runs up field, but had to peg back that part of his game to cover Terry for his lack of pace.
As for Cole, quality left back, but i wouldn't put him on par with Paolo Maldini, now he was World Class.

Friend of mine taught at a school up in Enfield, told me how a whole bunch of kids had come back after lunch dead happy that they'd met Cole in the McDonald's up the road, he'd been really friendly, talked to them, signed shirts and so forth. (This would have been 6-7 years ago.) A lot of players wouldn't have been so obliging, I suspect.

I don't get the hatred either. If he was our player we'd be very happy indeed. As for the air rifle incident, just stupidity.

Not a patch on Cyril, though. That was a LB.
