There's always that danger though isn't there. What if they fail to bounce straight back up.

This is key.

Finish the next few seasons in the play off places (i.e. 3rd every year), but fall at the final hurdle each time and it is a big problem.

Forest have a ground bigger than several premiership teams, but they still struggle (30K capacity).

Exactly, and that is should be Whams biggest fear with these next two games coming up. If they don't secure promotion via the playoffs, surely they are going to be in all sorts of trouble?

Come on Chrissy Hughton, you can win this thing :)

You do have to admire Levy. Because all of those teams have bigger stadiums, more resources (other than Villa) than us. Yet we are still in 4th place in the premier league. Paying the wages for a team that is 7th in the wages league table.

Perhaps we are punching above our weight? But we have assembled a first team/squad that on its day can match anyone in the PL, and are not killing ourselves financially by doing so. It really is quite remarkable.

You gotta fear for Villa though. They really were once a true big club in England, similar to us, and look how far they have fallen. I know we moan about Harry, don't get me wrong, I do aswell, and the mistakes that he has made are shocking, but Villa fans must be so jealous of where we are, and what we are doing on the budgets that we restrict ourselves to.
We are punching above our weight in exactly that sense, we have a far better squad of players than you would expect given the money we spend. The squad itself is not overachieving, if it was we would be top of the league, but just the fact that we have this squad is really quite incredible.

Bet Newcastle were right the other end of that table the season they went down. Just goes to show how well they've done since that season.

Sporting Intelligence took down last years table. We were in the mid 60's if I remember correctly.

I did find another forum that posted last years football #'s and we were 25th overall.

We jumped to 15th.

  1. Barcelona La Liga £4,775,894
  2. Real Madrid La Liga £4,441,368
  3. Chelsea Premier Lge £3,634,860
  4. Inter Milan Serie A £3,622,122
  5. Manchester City Premier Lge £3,539,981
  6. Bayern Munich Bundesliga £3,489,735
  7. AC Milan Serie A £3,409,606
  8. Manchester United Premier Lge £3,082,739
  9. Liverpool Premier Lge £2,979,884
  10. Arsenal Premier Lge £2,872,666
  11. Juventus Serie A £2,491,967
  12. Aston Villa Premier Lge £2,323,264
  13. Schalke 04 Bundesliga £2,128,494
  14. AS Roma Serie A £2,042,868
  15. Newcastle United Premier Lge £2,034,949
  16. Valencia La Liga £1,767,531
  17. Portsmouth Premier Lge £1,736,275
  18. Werder Bremen Bundesliga £1,694,661
  19. Stuttgart Bundesliga £1,609,928
  20. Borussia Dortmund Bundesliga £1,599,760
  21. Atletico Madrid La Liga £1,563,494
  22. West Ham United Premier Lge £1,520,085
  23. Sevilla La Liga £1,466,221
  24. Hamburg Bundesliga £1,440,462
  25. Tottenham Hotspur Premier Lge £1,427,671
  26. Everton Premier Lge £1,343,005
  27. Sunderland Premier Lge £1,262,957
  28. Blackburn Rovers Premier Lge £1,259,546
  29. Fiorentina Serie A £1,250,840
  30. Fulham Premier Lge £1,229,770
That means we jumped almost a million pounds per player or about 25 million pounds. There's your Champions League money. And maybe this explains the dramatic decrease in signings. Have we shifted our expenses from buying players to paying players? It's possible. Or it could be a one year blip.

Indeed, even last year with some big names in the Championship they were paying more than us at and average of 2 million per year per player. Very impressive turn around in their financial structure and I think its good for the game that they have been both austere and successful.

theres a total wage bill column missing from the database. I think our wage bill is higher than Villas they just have less players to divid the total by. Prorbaly doesn't add or take away much from the hypotheseis of the this thread but it is a fact thats been left out nonetheless.

the guardian releases a last years accounts article every year on Pl wages, spend and debt. We were 5th highest wage bill ahead of Villa. still some way behind Arse and Liverpool though.

Arseanl have actually made progress redcuing thier wages compared to the rivals in the Pl. at one time they had the 3 highest paid players in Europe (veira, henry and Judas) on thier wage bill and were clear highest wage payers before Abramovic bought Chelsea and UTD started to borrow money. Now City have cranked it up again. I dont think it will be long for arse and us to have parity on wage bills.

Villa reaping the rewards of a spell under Martin O'Neill's management I see. How he gets away with spending so much money on averageness is beyond me. I think Lerner worked him out though, hence their falling out.

Fill sorry the Villa supporters looking at that pay list noway are the players giving value for money.

As for Levy well you just have to hand it to him.

I totally agree that they started down this potentially destructive path of spending under O'Neill. And they have to wait for contracts to end, in many cases, because they can't sell many of their players to anybody that would equal the wages. But the strange things is, that while I had believed that Lerner and O'Neill came to loggerheads over the wages, Lerner has done nothing to adjust that wage bill and that can't be the case.

What really shocked me is that their spending increased marginally from 2011 to 2012. In a summer where they had sold two of their higher earners in Young and Downing and let Brad come to us, they still took on some players that make good wages with Hutton, N'Zogbia and Given.

I think the relegation scare last year made them give up a more austere approach and they went out and bought Bent, Makoun and Bradley, who were all over too big salary wise (Makoun's wages are 50k/w I heard).

It's almost like relegation would do them good as they could start fresh as these flirtations with relegation are just letting them spend too much in wages on average players.
