Mario Balotelli is determined to become the best footballer in the world and believes only Lionel Messi is currently a better player.

Manchester City striker Balotelli was speaking after he was given the 'Golden Boy' award for being the best Under 21 player in Europe.

The Italy international beat Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere to the prize and has now set his sights on winning the Ballon d'Or.

Though the 20-year-old has only impressed sporadically since joining City from Inter Milanin the summer, he believes he only trails Barcelona star Messi in the global pecking order.

Ambition

"I want to be the best player in the world," Balotelli told Tuttusport. "It is good to have ambition. I've said in the past that I don't care what other people want or expect of me because I know what I want.

"I will always give everything because I want to become the best. That is my aim and I am determined to make it happen.

"I am really happy to have won the Golden Boy 2010, but who else should have won it if not me? Two years ago I finished sixth and in 2009 in fourth. Now it is my turn.

"Now my objective is to win the Ballon d'Or without age limits. To win the Golden Boy is a good omen to win the main prize. I am now a candidate for that.

"There is only one player who is a little stronger than me - Messi. All the others are behind me."

What a douche.

Potential? Yes
Anywhere near second best player in the world? HA!

How modest of him to say Messi is a little better than him.

Arrogance is fine if you can back it up. He can't.

I read this this morning and I can only say, I truly hope he is having a laugh. He has potential but if that comment is genuine, I think it just confirms alot of what people thought about him.

There are probably about a dozen players who are better than him within his own postcode.

The guys had nearly as many cards as goals scored. Overrated and yet to prove himself.

SSN Just reported this diffrent.

"There is only one player who is a little stronger than me - Messi. All the others are behind me."

This quote was about past winners of the 'Golden Boy' award, and also said he doesn't know who Wilshire is (finished second i think) but will show him the award to let him know he won it.

IMO he is better than Messi. Maybe he hasn't proved it yet, maybe he never will, but he will always be better than Messi.

Wilshere is on a different planet to Balotelli at the moment, as is our very own Gareth Bale.

I guess this was taken out of context, and he reckons he is the strongest winner of the golden boy or whatever award, but it's still arrogant, and the thing with being this arrogant is that you have to back that up with action. Mourinho came to England and wound us all up with his arrogance, but then duly delivered the goods, I'm not sure this guy can as he seems to be a walking problem waiting to happen.

I wrote this the other day, but I'll say it again...

Balotelli thinks he's it.

Bale IS it.

I'm glad he doesn't play for us but I find him entertaining.

Footballers are turning into politicians with their well-rehearsed speeches and deflecting of questions.

An arrogant, misguided big mouth is what the Prem needs.

Worryingly I think he's serious. This is a guy with an ego so big that Jose Mourinho complained about it.

He's a bit like Mohammed Ali but without being World champ or in fact without being very good.

I used to want Spurs to sign him thought I heard of his attitude problem.... but after getting a closer looks at him in the EPL I am happy Spurs couldn't afford him. Yes he's most probably the CF right now with the biggest talent - but unless he totally changes his attitude he'll never become a top player.
He really fits into Citeh though, with all those brats.
