Barcelona failed to pay their players at the end of June, club president Sandro Rosell has revealed. Rosell, who succeeded Joan Laporta at the financially troubled Catalan outfit last week, also said a loan of about £125m had been secured to pay wages.
"We found a club in debt, with liquidity problems. At this point we have to take a loan to pay the wages of the players," he told Sport.
But Rosell said Barca can still afford Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
Barca recently sold defender Dmitro Chygrynskiy to Shakhtar Donetsk for about £12.5m to help raise much-needed funds, even though coach Pep Guardiola had been keen to keep him.

They also sold Ivory Coast international Yaya Toure to Manchester City for about£20m.
However, Rosell has moved to reassure worried fans that Barca's problems are under control and that the process of securing a loan had already started under the previous board.
"The banks know that we have a business plan that will allow them to recover the money. The club is not bankrupt because it generates income," he added.
"The members shouldn't be afraid because it is under control. We must resolve this tension.
"It can be done in two ways: to have extra income, like selling Chygrynskiy, and/or taking a loan, which is what we have done.
"The previous board had already begun this process. We followed the same path - the same banks, the same target but with a different business plan. They [Laporta's board] also knew they needed this credit."
And Rosell even claimed that over 50m euros (about £41m) would still be available to spend on new players.

I would not let Fabregas go, no matter how much he wants to

Despite their financial issues, Barcelona have been pursuing Arsenal star Fabregas for some time and recently signed Spain striker David Villa from Valencia.
Rosell intends to meet Gunners manager Arsene Wenger in South Africa shortly to discuss a deal for Fabregas, who started his career at the Nou Camp.
"It's now or never. We'll do it fast. It won't be protracted," said Rosell.
"I'll try to see Wenger in South Africa, then we'll tell you what happens.
"We would not pay the 50-60m euros that I have read about. If Arsenal do not go crazy, he might play at Barca.
"There will be 50m euros to sign more players. This is the case every year. This is our plan for the future.
"Technically, as of now we have 50m euros plus 15 for Chygrynskiy and 24 for Toure. In total, 89m euros (about £75m)."

Worrying to see this, I know that loans to improve liquidity are fairly standard and nothing we should be worried about, but Barcelona are (arguably) the best side in the world with a 109000 seater stadium.

I bet they regret buying Ibra and Chygrinsky, that alone cost them £65m (about half the value of the loan) + Eto'o, something they didn't really need to do.

This makes sense about Toure already saying he wants to play for Barcelona again, I imagine that he was probably encouraged to leave, as £24m for him, or whatever it was, is a silly amount.

listen to what rosell says.

the club is hardly bankrupt.

445 million euros is more turnover than any sporting institution worldwide.

mediapro who handle the tv rights and are in recievership owe FCB over 100 million euros.

It is a cash liquidity issue as SR has stated.

Are barca still in debt and if not why doesn't SR go ahead with foster project instead of that rubbish proposal of the renovations to camp nou

Yeah but a Club of Barca's size should never be unable to pay its players.

But then the banks will never let Barca or Real go out of business. It's all political bullshit left over from the Spanish civil war. Not fair IMHO

Barca in 350m euros in debt. TV rights are 150m Euro a year. But with the tv company in financial trouble, will anyone match that?

All I know is they have far more money than us.

Bad cash flow= Bad managment

Businesses dont go out of business because of debt, they go out of business because of bad cash flow, probably.

€445m of turnover, only €9m of net profit.

rosell only took over a week ago and hasnt been part of the board since 2005. Lets give him a chance he won 62% of the vote so people believe in his mandate.

Rosell isnt stupid. He was a vice president for Nike, has a net worth of over 250 million euros and a Harvard business degree.

9 mil profit due to bonuses from la liga, world club champions, spanish super cup, euro super cup.

contracts structured so that 60% fixed and then 10% more for winning trophies.

Have you seen Rosell plans for new Barca park complex??? For a start the palau blaugrana has to be renovated for basketball it only hold 7,000 at present. Euro basketball league says must have capacity of 12,000+ The foster project is ridiculous and would bankrupt the club. Rosell did a study and said socis(members) would have to pay 300 euros a year dues to be able to sustain. The camp nou despite holding 98,000 is crumbling to bits. Rosell is right it doesnt need a big increase in capacity is only full vs mandril, espanyol and big champions league games.

rosell said today on rac that mediapro should have the 150 million paid by July 15th. That there is 89 million plus the money from Caceres, Kerrison, Hernanes, and Henry.

Yes i have seen them and frankly renovations that are rubbish the following things are going to happen
1. Demolish the Mini Estadi and build a brand new one with a 20-25,000 capacity.
2. Demolish the Palau de Gel and the Palau Blaugrana 2.
3. Gut the Palau Blaugrana and add a new seating bow with a 12,000 capacity.
4. Extend the third tier of the Camp Nou, add a brand-new roof all around the stadium, and add an exterior facade to the stadium.

These new plans come to 150 million euros which is half of the foster project(300 millions euros) in todays climate maybe even less in spain with economy being worst and the jobs created

But the foster projects would of made it the best stadium in the world for a long time whereas now it is only the on of the best stadiums because of the size but it will probably get overtaken in the not too distant future

As Rosell said what is the point of extending it to 120,000 when it is 50% empty for 95% of the games.
The palau is a dump however most of the basketball socis dont want to play in the plaua st jordi.

Fosters project from Rosells projections was closer to 660 million euros and the generalitat has to give permission to destroy the mini

Shame he can't use Nikes business strategy..... sadly sweatshop workers don't make a good football team.
