Following on from the Bassong chat in the Twitter thread I thought I'd ask other peoples oppinions on him.

I'm not a big fan and would be happy to shift him on this summer. Not to fussed about the price either.

It seems that almost all our worst results last season came when he started for us.

Loss to Young Boys 3-2 (Away) (CL)
Lost to Arsenal 1-4 (Home) (CC)
Lost to West Ham 1-0 (Away) (PL)
Lost to Inter Milan 4-3 (Away) (CL)
Lost to Fulham 4-0 (Away) (FA)
Lost to Blackpool 3-1 Away) (PL)
Draw with Wigan 0-0 (Away) (PL)

What's more, the games against Young Boys, Inter Milan and Fulham were three of the most shambolic defensive displays I've seen by any team last season. It wasn't neseceraly him that made the mistakes in those games but it's a bit uncanny that he was involved in all of them. Also when he played with Dawson it seemed to turn Dawson to toss.

Am i missing something?

Yeah you're missing an entire season of good performances before those games. Also Dawson was far worse in the YB and Fulham games, Wigan was a clean sheet so how is Bassong getting blamed for that?

Used to like him, but sadly he comes across as lazy and sloppy recently

I think he's a good CB who played a big part in our top 4 season then we bought Gallas and made Daws captain so he hardly got a look in

I'm not a big fan of Daws being captain as imo he's just not good enough to be a guaranteed starter and isn't really captain material

People forget his first season's performances too quickly

Dawson was also shit in his second season and people on the boards wanted to get rid of him, doe they still want to get rid of him now?

bassong was great alongside dawson the season we finished fourth...like most players find, a decent run in the side yields better and more consistent performances...in and out of the side a lot this season coupled with the fact his confidence probably took a knock after being dropped after performing so well for an extended period of time and I'm not surprised his form has been erratic this season.

what perplexes me is that Harry obviously thought his debut season wasn't as good as others seemed to think, however gallas was a class signing and I was all for the signing.

I rate Kaboul higher though so its hard to see a Spurs future for seb if he wants regular first team football.

This.

Bassong looked great last season. I fully believed he would be one of our future CBs.

Having said that, with Kaboul getting better with each game, abd Caulker developing well, I'm not too fussed about him leaving. He's certainly a lot better than some seem to think though.

He needs to leave for the sake of his career but he deserves more credit for his performances last season.

He played his part in our good defence in the 09/10 season.

i think the opening post says it all tbh. In the games he started, we were pretty shambolic defensively for the majority of them. He has a lot of good attributes but doesnt have the strength or concentration at the moment to make it at the highest level. He needs to play regularly and we cant offer him that so for the sake of his career he needs to move on to a mid table club where he can play more regularly. I would be suprised if he ever became a regular first choice CB at one of the top clubs. I would rather the likes of Caulker got a chance on the bench

Sorry, I cannot accept that Dawson was far worse in the YB game. Nobody could possibly be "far worse" than that defensive display.

Not sure how anyone can solely blame him for the matches in the OP.

The last game I can remember when one of our defenders had a nightmare was Dawson vs Fulham in the FA Cup.

Who do you blame for our shambolic defending this season?

When Dawson makes mistakes they tend to be the same ones, yet he remains first choice.

tobi - no1 blamed him solely for the matches in the op. Was just pointed out that our worst defensive performances all coincided with him starting.

That's the impression I get from the OP.

I was slightly surprised when we signed him for circa 7 mill from a team that had been relegated. In pretty much equal measures he has looked impressive and then a liability.

He looks a little too stocky, a little top heavy. He has sometimes shown a really impressive turn of pace, other times he has looked worryingly slow (especially for the 'pacey' defender of the two CBs). I think a few sessions with a sprint coach would get half a yard more pace from him, his running style is a little awkward/weird.

Against Young Boys in the first leg he played poorly, although his goal before half time was actually pretty key in us getting through in the end. He struggled against Inter, and when paired with Corluka against West Ham they were woeful against Piquonne. However his first season with us he was pretty impressive

He is yet another player that is suffering from not playing often enough to find the form that would be worthy of a first team place. A sign of our squad being too big? Or an indication we need the reserve team back? I'd say its more the former, there is no point having a £7 million centre back as 5th choice (behind King, Dawson, Gallas and Kaboul, not including Woodgate)

I saw more promise/rawness with Kaboul in his first stint at the club, so I wouldn't be disappointed if Bassong left, but I'd wish him all the best

He was consistent enough when we finished top 4 and he often makes very well timed, impressive tackles.

However, to me he's always seemed like a pretty fragile player. If he's coming into the team after a few games out he seems dodgy. Kaboul is better. Gallas is better. Dawson is better. He won't be a starter for us in the near future, and he doesn't seem to have the 'presence' that most top defenders do.

Taken from another thread. Worst points per game and average more goals against us when he plays by quite some margin.

Harsh to judge him on last season alone though, it's worth remembering that he was a regular in the season we finished 4th and had one of our best defensive records in ages.

I believe Kaboul is better and won't be losing any sleep if Bassong were to leave, but I also wouldn't be upset if he stayed and were given more chances. As someone pointed out, he is quite fragile and his form dips when given the odd game rather than a prolonged run.
