To put this to bed(maybe). Seville can do nothing, the contracts are registered with the Spanish FA so as soon as you inform the FA you plan to trigger the release clause the FA give permission to speak to the player and the club can do nothing. Real Madrid signed Sergio Ramos in this way minutes before a deadline.

I wasn't aware of that so I defer to your better knowledge if that's the case a_p.

My post presumed there was an interaction with the club at some junction.

But doesn't this only apply with deals between Spannish clubs? I'm sure all Spannsih registered players have to have a buy out clause and if this is met, then the player has to be released. But I'm not sure this applies to clubs outside La Liga. Are there any examples of this happening with deals with clubs from abroad?

Joey - you may be correct, but I'd be surprized if a contractual clause with a release fee was limited to Spanish clubs only. That feels like it would be in breach of EU contract law - even though you're correct that the need for a buy-out clause is something specified by Spanish footballing authorities.

There have been plenty of press reports about EPL and Italian clubs considering triggering the release fees of top Spanish players so I would expect them to be pan-European.

If Capel's release fee only applies to Spanish clubs, then Del Nido will be able to stop him coming to Spurs. However, most of the reports linking us with Capel do so in the context of his release fee, eg:

Sensational football news are out and it is reported that Sevilla star Diego Capel has revealed he is ‘flattered’ by reported interest from Tottenham, just a week after Real Madrid were also linked with him. This news comes as no surprise as the 20-year-old has been the subject of speculation about a move to the reigning Spanish champions Real Madrid, and the inevitable links with former Sevilla coach Ramos have also been forthcoming.
It is believed Ramos’ hand is about to be forced by Real’s interest in the youngster, and Capel is thrilled to be linked with the Premier League outfit.
In a recent interview with the media Capel was quoted as saying that he has heard of the interest from Tottenham and that he is flattered that Ramos is impressed enough to have a look at him.
It is believed that the Spain Under-20 international has an £8 million buy out clause in his current contract with the Andalusian side, which could rise to £10m dependent on the number of games he plays for Sevilla by the end of the season.
Diego Capel has so far played a total of 33 games and scored 3 times for Sevilla in all competitions.
