Nicklas Bendtner has been fined an astonishing 100,000 euro (£80,000) fine and banned for one competitive international fixture for displaying sponsored underwear during Denmark's game against Portugal.

The Danish striker pulled up his shirt to reveal 'Paddy Power' branded underwear on June 13 in Lviv and the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body has taken drastic action against him.

His ban will apply for Denmark's next 2014 World Cup qualifying match, if Bendtner does not appeal - he has three days to do so after the written decision is sent to him.

It's crazy this. I can't stand the guy, but an individual FA gets fined less than half what he has when fans are racist.

Shocking amount of money to be fined in my opinion. UEFA really are mental.

I find the "banned for one competitive international fixture" bit more shocking than the fine, tbh.

it's all about protecting the image rights of those who pay big money to be part of the official sponsorship at tournaments such as this.

I have friends in industries who are not even allowed to mention the Euros in ANY material whatsoever because competitor brands have paid for the rights. If they accidentally release a piece of paper saying anything about the Euros and their product then UEFA will fine them 40million Euros.

It's big big money to UEFA and they will do anything to protect that investment.

So whilst it is harsh on the player he was likely aware of what he was doing a UEFA are apparently very clear about this kinda thing.

I agree its all about greed and money, but hey, welcome to football.

Don't be fooled into thinking it's just UEFA though, same thing for the Olympics or any other major sporting event.

Paddy Power have probably said whatever he's fined, they'll pay him more for the advert. They would know how much publicity it would attract and it's been seen all over the world.

Very much this.

For me it's the indivdual FA fines that are more shocking to be honest. Everyone knows the rules regarding sponsership and it's one of the reasons they are involved in such a rich sport.

That saying... I can't disagree with this...
Just lock him up and be done with it.

Yeah not surprised, but don't be surprised to see UEFA clamp down even harder next time if anyone tries these kinda stunts again. The match bans especially are effective as managers won't put up with their stars concentrating more on marketing for companies rather than football.

I saw in the paper Paddy Power denied any commercial agreement but seems weird he would do it knowing he will be fined without having any agreement in place.

Rio Ferdinand pointed out that the fine its more than all the racism fines to date combined in the tournament stop far. Shows what really motivates UEFA really. He would have got a smaller fine if the underpants were racist.

This shows exactly where UEFAs real 'ethics' truly lie.
