Many seem to think we need another striker in Jan if Defoe is off.

Benteke would seem a pretty good fit for us. Many wanted him in the summer.

Hes out of form and probably would be cheaper than previously as he is not flavour of the month.

Would it be a good move for him in Jan?

Was great on early season form and would be the right type of player. Can't see any big signings in January though... if anything a loan CB and maybe a loan striker if defoe goes....

I still really like Benteke. For me he's an upgrade on Defoe. I wonder about his motivation this season at a side who, at best, would be pushing for mid table. While the speculation in the summer and transfer request secured him an improved contract at Villa, I'm not sure he is too happy there.

That said, I'd be surprised if, a) Villa sold him and b) we spend any serious money this window

Looks to me like Sherwood is going to use our youth to cover and rotate with our strikers even If Defoe moves on

He either wants out of Villa and therefore does't give a fuck, hes injured and thats effecting his performances or last season was a fluke because he has been fucking terrible this season and thats not an over reaction. The jury is out on which of the above reasons apply to him though. I have a few Villa fans in work and while they are moaning about most things ATM they would happily cash in on Bentekke. I dont think we will be spending big in January though, if Hernandez is available at a cheaper price I would perfer him.

If we are playing 2 up top surely we need more than Ade, Soldado and Kane?

We made money in the summer. I dont want to bring more new players in but if we continue to sell (Defoe) then we have to spend some money surely?

Agreed.

But we cannot buy WC players so we need to gamble on top players who are out of form who could be very very good.

Benteke may be an astute gamble.

I doubt we'll spend another £20m especially on a striker who can't buy a goal and is demonstrating "second season syndrome"

Having said that, I wouldn't say no

EDIT - I also remember reading that if Ath Madrid sell Diego Costa then Tekkers is their first choice to replace him. I'm sure, if that eventuality arrives, then Villa will be more inclined to sell to them. Can't see Villa selling them to anyone mid season though

That's a good thing, and long may it continue.

While I didn't agree with the Bentaleb sub yesterday, Sherwood kept fresh legs out there by using Youth and enthusiasm. Nothing wrong with that.

I'd love for us to sign Beteke - but not with a guarantee of starting.. players need to be kept hungry, and at the moment, at Villa, he isn't.

I don't see us spending much in January, probably only what we make on Defoe.

I'd imagine that was his remit from Levy. To be fair there seems to be players ready to step up in some positions, although right now not sure striker is one of them. Could Defoe's departure perhaps see Coulibaly get shifted up the chain, or is he still not really producing the goods?

He hasn't been good season but that alone isn't a reason not to buy.

I doubt they'd sell in January anyway. If we do buy him it would be for an inflated price.

Not against an inflated price if it's the right signings. I'd like to know why he has been poor this season.

One season wonder? Unmotivated at playing for a terrible team that plays terrible football? Enjoying life away from the pitch too much?

No idea, but he's an option we should be considering. I think he'll probably go in the summer.

Good point.

I suppose though if they could get 15-20M for him and hes not performing for them Lambert may feel he could buy 2-3 players with that money who may help them stay up.

I just don't think Levy will commit to a full time signing in January... I think it would be loan until the summer due to the prices... Unless a bargain comes up

They would still demand in excess of 20m for him

We've now got a settled first team strike partnership and I can't see us spending that sort of money (money that you'd spend on an immediate first team starter, which was potential unsettle the Ade/Soldado partnership)

If we do move for a new striker surely it will be a youngster who Baldini perceives to have world class potential and can play a role now but is one for the future

Not writing Kane off in any way but I seriously do not think he is ready to start in the league for us.

Given TS 442 we are an injury away to Ade (already happened?) or Soldado to having to start Kane.

Id be very concerned.

What a strange thread.

Villa are likely to be in a relegation battle at some point this season. Why the hell would they sell their best player when he's only just signed a new contract ?

We spent 30M on Lamela and he is not an immediate starter.

I dont think we can rely on Ade/Soldado playing every game. We need a squad and although Im happy for Kane to be 4th choice Im not happy for him to be 3rd.

Because he is their most valuable asset and is not their best player on current form. Hes been basically useless for them.

Of course he'll be good for us. As would hundreds of other players, but I doubt a thread for each one would help secure their services..

Couibaly I can't see making the step up anytime soon

Nothing I've seen or read from our youth matches in recent times suggests he's been a stand out and the fact he's had no involvement in the Europa while Kane and Coulthirst have seen first team action probably suggests he's lower down the pecking order
