Bale looked good on the left I thought, better than he does at left back. I really hope we dont give up on him.

both well taken goals, and it was good to see Bale having chances and getting crosses in

I think those videos alone illustrate exactly why we should persevere (is that the right spelling? :eh:) with both Bale and Bentley.

Bale's clearly got the talent, and I remember Michael Carrick being pretty poor at West Ham for a year or 2 after exploding onto the scene. I really hope it's a similar story with Bale and he fulfils his obvious potential.

Bentley's 2nd goal is just utter class. There are very few players who have it in them to strike a ball like that, and whilst he's been very average for the most part this season, there's no doubting he has something special when he's up for it.

yep quality goals and good to see bale doing well

I wonder if the slower speed of the reserve game disproportionately helps those two?

bale is not slow 'slow' but it seems the pace of the prem is a bit much for him (he's not the only one of course)

I dunno - might just be he's had a rough time with injuries and is now on his way back - we'll see

as for bentley - I saw him pre-season v roma and he was 'sensational'

so I jes dunno bout him either

ah well time is the great decider

Thanks for that, good goals. Bale did look very good, albeit against weak opposition for him. Very complimentary analysis aswell from Arsenal TV.

I think you're well off the mark on Bale, DC Boy. Bale is one of the quickest people at our club (seem to remember one player saying that Lennon and Bale were the two quickest players at Tottenham, might've even been Lennon himself), and Bale certainly didn't look like he was struggling with the pace of the Premiership during his dazzling start to his Spurs career.

IMO, it's purely a case that he's a young player who has gone through/is going through a patch of poor form that happens to 99% of all young players at that stage in their career. His injuries haven't helped matters any, albeit I wouldn't use that as an excuse for his poor form since all players get injuries from time to time. But for me, there's no question that he will make it as a quality Premiership player, either at left-back or at left midfield/wing. I very much hope it's with us, and I think we'd be incredibly short sighted to write Bale's poor 2008/09 season off as a "won't ever really make it" indicator rather than the natural dip in form of a young player I think his campaign has been.

i love the commentary at the start of the 2nd clip:

"free kick. Obviously Szczesnys got his angles worked out, he knew it was going to hit the post so he didn't bother diving"

quite clearly! it obviously had nothing to do with him not having a hope in hell of reaching it even if it had been going in.

We already knew Bentley had a good right foot. That video still doesn't show that he's too slow. Poor at tracking back. Gives the ball away by trying to beat his man when Corluka is making an overlapping run and is the better option. Gives the ball away by taking shots when he probably shouldn't because he DOESNT have the time on the ball that he did on that 2nd goal.

fair enough scat :) - I just don't think Bale is that fast and the pace of the prem idoes catch him out - i think once he 'gets up a gallop' then he has pace - but the rarely seems to get into that 'gallop' in the prem - post-injuries at least

I did also say 'might just be he's had a rough time with injuries and is now on his way back '

I do remember how exciting he was when he first burst through but I'm talking about the Bale we've seen this season not last season early on

I may be well wrong though - be interesting to see what others think

compare him to BAE - to me BAE sems quicker and less fussed by the pace of the game -

maybe it's more a mental thing and Bale is still adjusting to the pace of the prem - I dunno - as you say I may be well off the mark :)

Cool, wasn't at all trying to bash you with my post, and you never wrote Bale off altogether which would be my main sticking point with anyone who said that.

I think where we differ is that you might see the poor season he's had this year as a truer indicator of his real level or potential than I do. I am convinced that this year has been a poor season in what will become an excellent footballer's career, and it sounds as though you see it as a poor season in an ok-player-who-might-make-it's career.

Obviously, at this stage in Bale's development, it's too early for anyone to claim that they're dead right about how Bale will turn out, and it's all about opinions. For me, I see some of the elements of great players in Bale that you just can't teach, and his shortcomings (of which I'd happily admit he still has a fair few) are all ones that I'd expect of a lad who's not yet turned 20. Unless his development takes an unexpected nose-dive, I expect him to be at least as good as Benny by the time he reaches the same age.

fair enough scat :) naturally I hope your more positive view of Bale is the correct one

to me we need someone who can cover LB/LM - Bale woould be ideal if he can make it
