I'd be slighlty cautious about signing Santa Cruz. I see an incredible amount of parallels between Blackburn and Sevilla, that would make me weary of spending decent money on any of their strikers. Santa Cruz and Kanoute are similar players, as are Fabiano and McCarthy. Between them they've all had 1 fantastic season in recent years, having previously had pretty average or inconsitent careers in front of goal.
What all 4 of them have found at Sevilla and Blackburn is that they are playing in systems that many strikers would flourish in. At Sevilla Palop, Navas, Adriano, Alves and Capel have provided Kanoute and Fabiano with incredible service from wide areas. And as a result both strikers have had great seasons in recent years. It's the same at Blackburn. MGP, Bentley, Warnock (the most under rated FB in the Prem) and Emerton all provide great service for strikers. I really see no reason why Bent wouldn't have scored as many at Blackburn as McCarthy or Santa Cruz. If we sign Bentley, to compliment Bale and Hutton, we'd have the service. The question is would Santa Cruz make any more of it the Bent. I'd say he's technically better, but Bent is quicker and more direct. With the right service I think Bent would be a 20+ a season striker in the Prem. He scored 18 in a poor Charlton side. Had Santa Cruz been playing for us last season, when we had a right footed left back, a right footed LW and a RW who generally offers poor delivery, would he have scored anywhere near as many?
Humm i see what you're gettig at but in that senario, Cruz last season would be playing upfront with Berb or Keane. I think you could come up with a reasonable enough argument to say that would balance it out.
A better comparison would be Bents goals ratio for Charlton. would Cruz have faired any better in that exact same charlton team?
