this is unfair to Wayne I know, as he is not cut out for the lone striker role for England, but I couldn't help thinking how much better Berbs is at this role. Superior with his heading ability, his chest control, and his technique on the ground.

Watching Berbs is like watching Barenboim playing a Beethoven piano concerto, full of drama beauty and technical brilliance, watching Rooney is more like watching Jerry Lee Lewis playing Great Balls of Fire, full of excitement, more popular with the masses, but with a few rough notes along the way.

And yes I know Berbs ***s up more than Barenboim, but you try playing Beethoven with a couple of defenders kicking you up in the air and the audience shouting abuse at you

May as well compare Robbo to Berbatov. Completely different players.

Although they might work well together as a pair!

Hi Shanks :) - disagree with that - Both Rooney and Berbs have been asked to play as lone strikers in their time, Robbo hasn't (not at international/prem level anyway).

I'm not sayiing that Berbs is better than Rooney, but I am saying he plays the lone striker role better

But then I don't think even ol' Wayne would claim that he is best suited to playing up top on his own. What this thread quite worryingly highlights though, is how ridiculously good United would be if they did manage to kidnap our Bulgarian wonder. Meh. Positive thoughts...

hi Matt, that's the point I made at the top of my article, but I just couldn't help comparing to our very own maestro

I remember an English journalist saying 13-14 months ago (i.e., before Berbatov to become a hit in English football) that if Berbatov was English he would be the second most popular person in England (after the queen). That's not far from the truth.

Rooney is a great young player and is in some respects superior to Berba (energy and fighting spirit wise). But overall Berbatov is better.

Watching the England game last night really did highlight our worrying lack of 'striking' talent. I wish Berbs was English. Actually I don't...

Maybe we should sign Rooney...?!

Of course DC :)

Rooney isn't the type of player to play the lone striker role, I would have preferred Crouch to play that role last night, than Rooney.

You know, who probably could play that role for ENgland better than anyone else... our own Bent ;)

Yep, that's all they lack imo (and they're not eaxcatly suffering for it!) - a proper number 9 - they never really replaced Ruud. I'm not sure if they could still play Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo off of him, but it would be a horrifying prospect. I'd have few quarms with Berba going to United if that's what he wanted, but it would look very bad for us to lose another key player to them (or any of the "big" 4).

I'm more worried about Man City though - he couldn't possibly resist the lure of Casvenova!

I'm not sure that Utd will want to pay the necessary £25m+ to get Berbs, if they did it'd surely be a case of rotation rotation rotation - which Utd could probably afford to do

They could, but we'll have to hope they choose to go for someone else at a lower price, like Benzema from Lyon. It all comes down to what Berbs wants at the end of the day - if United are serious and he wants to go, we have little choice.

Benzema signed a new contract and his release clause is 50m pounds.

Rooney needs a proper partner and I think bent has all the attributes to be his natural partner upfront, however it won't ever happen unless he starts getting more games.

I read a newspaper column the other day (Unfortunately, I cannot for the life of me recollect which...) espousing the virtues of Fergie and how brilliantly he has done to stop the Russian revolution and prove that money cannot buy you the league. I sat back, pondered and quietly chuckled to myself. How much have United spent in the past few seasons?!!?!?!!
