In all likelihood Modric signed in the hope that Berba was staying, but he knew that whilst the club wanted him to stay nothing had been agreed and there is a fair chance he will be off to pastures new in the summer. I don't believe that Modric and/or his agent would be daft enough to believe that Berba was staying until a formal announcement had been made regarding him signing a new contract.
It is good to hear these snippets of gossip/rumour/facts that come from sources close to the epicentre of the club, as I've not got that sort of direct access myself. I apply my own filter to these, and chuckle at the ones that seem far-fetched and get excited by those that are in my humble opinion more realistic. I'd rather they keep coming rather than we cut them off by slating the contributors - we are all allegedly adults, so let us make up our own minds.
