I was trying to think of who Ardiles used as his defensive partnership but then remembered we didn't bother with a defence.

Best I've seen is the current duo. King/Woodgate in theory was great but it didnt happen enough unfortunately

Ardiles was a midfielder.

Ledders and Woody for me too.
I remember watching one game, and the first time, the only time, I actually wanted the opposition to have the ball, just for the sheer pleasure of watching them run head first into our brick wall.

When these polls crop up its pretty much always going to give the same sort of result, ie the latest thing because its either the freshest thing in the memory or because of the puppy to old fart ratio on here :D

Personally, from that list i'd go with Roberts/Miller and then Gough/Mabbutt. If our current pair go on as they are then they could easily overtake them. An old fart has voted :woot:

It's a fairly resounding vote for King & Woodgate as far as I can see and I thought that immediately.

Ossie used to play Mabbut and Calderwood iirc btw folks.

I think a lot of us are too young to remember the partnerships you mention. Personally I haven't even seen Sol play for us!

The moment when a lot of you realise suddenly he left almost 15 years ago.

Smokey & The Snowman, closely followed by the trio of Rubber Duck, Love Machine & Spider Mike.

(Has this thread gone too far for me to come in with a comedy response? :()

On paper, King and Woodgate were head and shoulders above the rest. The 2 finest CB's of their generation, both cruelly had their prime years curtailed by injuries. Anyone saying Ferdinand or Terry are the best CBs of their generation is an ignoramus who should be removed from the gene pool immediately

Unfortunately, they didn't play enough together to be proclaimed our finest pairing

At least with King/Woodgate they managed to get on the pitch together for the League Cup win v Chelsea. So, although they didn't play too many games together, they managed to be gaffa taped to bring home our last trophy. Had the pleasure of being at that game - King was utterly imperious all day, Woodgate obviously got the winner. Amazing day.

I confess, I was working purely on memory and it was 20 years ago. I just remember really liking Gough and Fairclough - I think he was a better CB than Mabutt, but he got a bad injury didn't he ? Does it matter how many games they played together?

Personally I think Mabutt was over rated. Decent footballer but not the great CB that people say he was. He was easily bullied. Personally I think Graham Roberts was a better CB than Mabutt. Hard as fuck and could play football too when given the chance. Everyone goes on about Dier playing in CM now, I remember Hoddle going off in a game (I'm sure it was Southampton) and Roberts got pushed into CM and absolutely ran the gaff, and I'm sure scored a hat-trick (or two goals) from midfield, spraying balls all over the place.

Fair enough, but yes I think they've got to play 20 plus games at the very least to be considered a great partnership. On the basis of 9 games there might not even have been one really strong opponent (I haven't checked). Ideally you'd be looking at partnerships that lasted a few seasons, but it just shows what a relative paucity of top CB partnerships we've had over the years, I guess, that we're looking at Gough/Mabbutt or King/Woodgate (or Gough/Fairclough!) as the best in over 40 years of Spurs teams. I do think the Belgians will surpass them all if we can get at least a couple of seasons out of them.

As for Roberts, funnily enough I though he was slightly over-rated as a CB. Always looked a bit shaky alongside Paul Miller for me, though he might have done well with a really solid partner. It's true though he was surprisingly effective in midfield - much better than I thought he was going to be (much like Dier, actually).
