You may be getting it free now but you can bet your ass it won't be free come 2015 :p

Oh, you're right. Actually, I will pay for it (if I choose to do so) in June 2014, given the 'BT Sport for a free' deal. TBH there were other reasons why I moved from VirginMedia to BT (Infinity II - no more restricting FUP / better service / higher speed / cheaper) - the BT Sport thing in no way swung it.

I'm just pissed off with the whole thing.

Players being paid millions often before they've achieved anythin, fans being charged more and more to go to games, TV rights being too expensive, even some pubs can't afford to pay for Sky Sports and the rich poor divide getting bigger and bigger.

It's just so depressing. Yes, it's a business. But the business method is to fleece the customers and give them little choice but to either pay too much or not watch at all.

Ah the beauty of not reading posts and going off on a rant.

Did I say saved football? No. Did I say made it what it is today. Well it clearly did.
sorry yawa you did indeed my bad. The "sky saved football" is a direct quote from Rupert Murdoch in an interview he gave a few years back.

Because they force you to pay for a dish ?

I don't get this or the moans from others. Football is a business, why should they give their product away from free ? Sky is a business and it's buying of football rights in England has been the single most influential factor in the improvement of the quality of football we now all watch.

It's great that BT are now creating a viable bidding opponent to Sky as well, can only mean more money heading the football clubs way.

ITV were not getting CL and Europa football 'for free'... The public was.

This is what's generally known as 'a good thing'.

Less free-to-air football and more money going to clubs to spend on agents and wages, and the public now being forced to pay twice for the same service they used to get with a single payment, is what's known as 'a bad thing'.

Unless of course you think that football should be seen by as few people as possible, be inaccessible not just at grounds but now also on tv to millions who can't afford to watch it, and that people and businesses, who are already incomprehensibly wealthy, should get even richer.

That'd be an odd way to think, though.

It's a joke, i honestly don't know how BT can afford it, they must be swallowing enormous loses to get these rights.

By getting people to sign up for Broadband, Take a hit in the first year to get a decent market share and then make back the profit by years 2-3.

For me this will only add to the competition within the TV & Broadband market and make other providers like Sky & Virgin raise their games by offering more flexibility or cheaper deals.

Personally I have Virgin mainly for the Fibre Optic internet and love the fact that I get BT Sport & ESPN for free as part of my package. I don't have Sky Sports but as I set up my parents connection I can use their login details for SkyGo and watch them on my tablet.

I like the way sky package the football coverage but have an unhealthy dislike of the two Jamies (Redknapp & Carragher). Gary Neville has impressed me though and the whole sky machine is very slick in how they cover football (particularly Soccer Saturday & Champions league coverage)

I hate the way they say "oh we need more companies in volved in coverage to get the best deal for customers" it never works like that, now if I want the CL games I need to subscribe to BT Shite.... no thanks I will stick with Sky.

Considering BT's pre-tax profits were up 7pc to £638m and have a turnover of more than £4bn I think they can afford it just fine.

I've just had to renew my contract with BT phone/broadband because Sky couldn't give me what yet I had an email through from them a week after telling me I was going to be charged £6.95 a month for BT Sport!
Phoned them up & told them they could kindly take their BT Sport back to which I was then told there had been a mistake and I could have it free of charge, they then tried to convince me that as a cost saving exercise I should pay my line rental for the year up front as it'd save me about £15....
Yup, BT are going to be looking to claw back some serious cash in the next couple of season!!

In BT's defence, when SKY started giving away free broadband & phone line deals it gave BT no choice but to compete as they were losing customers hand over foot. They already had the BTvision network, and when the ESPN channels became available progressing into Sport channels wasn't too big a jump.
Despite the huge cost, this foray into TV & sport has actually been extremely successful for BT as they have gained huge market share in the phone & broadband sector (~1/3 of the market), whereas previously they were dieing a death and being hammered all around.

Yeah I figured, but it seems odd that Sky after being in the game for so long can be ousted by newcomers like that. I figured Sky had a bit of money too.

Sky do have quite a bit of money but BT have more.

The game has been the victim of it's own success for a while now. Won't get any better in that respect.

Sadly I agree. What makes it worse is we really don't have much of a choice. If I could pay £10 a month to watch the football in a foreign language I would.

I want to watch the football, I've watched and played the game for long enough to make many of my own judgments and analysis. I don't need a barely literate former footballer to tell me the obvious. Certainly don't want to pay a lot more for it.

Yup, that's why the internet is such a blessing.
