I don't think he would have the legs to play in a two now. Didn't he play in a three man midfield at Leicester?

Quite a difference that.
Yes, I would be surprised if he did still have the legs, but didn't see much of Leicester so not sure how well he did (though he won their player of the year I believe) but I have read in played in the middle 2 of a 4-4-2 at times, though was mostly in a 3 I think.

My issue with Cambiasso is does he still have the legs to play in a high tempo system, in a CM2 with Bentaleb? He had great stamina in his prime.

From a building for the perspective, he could be great (if he can handle the above), as he has the knowledge and experience to help out the young players and we can use that year to try and get Winks or Veljkovic ready to take over.

Agreed, said something similar the first time this idea was mooted.

I really don't understand the philosophy of bringing in kids, just for the sake of bringing in kids. This is a club with high expectations both from the board and from supporters. This is not some mid-table squad whose only goal for a season is to not get relegated.

"Poch did not hand any debuts starts last year" Who deserved one? People get caught up in the trees and don't see the forest. Look at our training photos - every player who is within a shout of the first team is out there, in front of coaches, playing against PL calibre players, showing what they can do. That is a tremendous opportunity, and commitment from the club, to those players, and to the academy.

Spurs are not a charity. They have to carefully balance the needs of the present with the development of the future. And, for every game that an academy youth starts, its a game that another player on the squad does not start. If that academy product is not ready - think about the message that sends to the other players. It says the club values next season, more than this season. Why are the players then supposed to care? Contrast that with letting players earn playing time - as Poch has shown time and again - and you get a sense of competition within the club - where players know that if they want to play, they have to perform. Nothing is given; nothing is taken away. Everything is earned. Everyone gets the same opportunity to earn their spot on the training pitch.

I think its great that we want academy players to be part of the squad, and I think its even better that we hold them to a high standard, and that we give them opportunities to meet those high standards.

I don't think anyone is saying bring in kids just for the sake of bringing in kids. From what I'm understanding of all this, the argument is why should we bring in average players or players who don't really improve the first team much when we have a really talented player in our Academy that we should give the chance to.

We've got a pretty great Academy with some really good talent in their it seems and from all the noise we keep hearing and what some people are seeing too there's a lot of potential there and all that so people are essentially asking why not give them a shot? Especially when we get linked to a player like Moses who is far from exceptional you have to wonder, why would we buy how ever much for him and play him when we really talented players in our Academy. Sure they're unproven in the premier league but is it really right to spend 8million or whatever to buy a player like Victor Moses or do we give a shot to Josh Onomah for example (I'm not overly familiar with everyone's best position so apologies if that's a bad comparison).

But yes I think it's things like that. And I agree Spurs are not a charity and our fans want success and we have high expectations of our club (arguably too high). I also think though that given the kids a chance does not go against that. I don't think anyone is saying play the kids in the premier league all the time and do that, but more that we should give them their shot in the Europa League or Cup Games etc... and if they prove it in them then why not give them the premier league game here and there. So it's not like we're saying play the kids for the sake of it, we're saying, as you said, everyone gets the same opportunity. Just do we need to keep buying average players as well

I think the title of the thread is worded in a way to put the OP's point in the more positive light.

No one is going to say they actually want ordinary players.

But right now as excited as some are about Bentaleb there is a lot of work to do on his game. Parker got criticised for his performances in his last season at the club, Bentaleb got praised. But Parker's criticism was based on him being a senior player and occasional international and Bentaleb's praise was based on his age.

Parker's positional play was much advanced to Bentaleb's. Playing alongside a player like Parker would be really beneficial to Bentaleb's game. This is why I believe Cambiasso would be a really good signing for us.

I don't recall any talented group of youngsters becoming successful without experienced players with the right attitude around them. The idea that football is simply coached by the manager and coaches is a complete fallacy.

So right now characters like VDV, Cambiasso, Parker etc would be great for our young players. Cambiasso aside I don't think that group are the right signings now.

Many of our current group of experienced players are not leading the way, we need some experienced players or I believe our talented squad will fall to pieces at times.
