Can we finish above Liverpool in the league?

I guess that a winning team will ALWAYS be a winning team....as long as they BELIEVE that they are capable of winning any game. So where does that put our current crop of Yids? Much closer than in recent years....but still 'likely' to 'drop the baton' when looking like 'The REAL Deal'....? Well, what more can we expect from a perennial under achieving club? It has to return to the Glory Glory years, sooner rather than later.....? So where are the Mackays, Blanchflowers and Greaves? We may not be too far away but....we are, undeniably, still a potential 'soft touch' for 25% of the EPL teams? However, ON our Day we are a real danger to 95% of the same EPL teams! COYS!

I think Liverpool have the belief that they can beat the other top four teams and they have the belief and experience they can get top four, we don't. If Liverpool are two up against Man Utd I expect them to win and 9 times out of 10 they usually do. If we are two up against Man Utd I expect us to lose and 10 times out of 10 we usually do.

Hellava - I'm hoping that if Woody can get fit, and Daws can stay fit, there won't be any problems. We do seriously need cover for Palatial (David PleatMeister told me so). 'Arry has alluded to this already. He pretty broadly hinted that Sandro (or Sandra:eek:mg:) would be arriving in January. And then there is the whole Muntari thang...

Mullers: You are probably correct that Liverpool have that feeling (and I for one am hoping they stuff the Mancs next week - now that would make it very interesting). But you don't seem to take account of the fact that United's record against the other 'Big 4' teams was woeful last year and they still won the Prem. Indeed, our record against Liverpool, Chelsea and ArseScum was better than theirs. Given that there are a lot of teams capable of taking points off one another, and as of so far we have just lost twice to the two top teams (and I for one am expecting a totally different game at the Lane against Chelsea), who can be most consistent against the rest could just as well be important. Liverpool have a very dodgy fixture list now, whereas we have 3 home games against teams we should be looking to beat and a Derby (where anything can happen). If we do well out of that, and build up a head of steam, who knows, eh:shrug: Personally, and I think I speak for most, I'm not looking for anything but a pip-squeking fourth to be totally exstatic, and think it is possible, more than probable:up:

If we can play Ledley and Woody together, Gomes, and also Palacios, Modric and Lennon in midfield, for at least, say, 18 of the remaining 29 games, then imo we're more likely to finish above the bindippers than not. (The rest of the squad is of a consistent enough quality that bar a horrendous injury crisis it won't make a massive difference who else plays.) Don't Liverpool have similar quality to those 6 standout players for us? Yes, but I don't think they have the team spirit, a style of play to beleive in, or the momentum we've built up quite steadily since Redknapp arrived. All our players and the hierachyare pulling in the same direction, but Mascherano for instance wanted to leave and Gillette and Hicks continue doing their thing.

So, just to confirm, we're a soft touch for 25% of the EPL teams but a danger to 95% of those very same teams.

That makes you 46.3% div.

On topic, unfortunately i think Liverpool will go on a run if they stay injury free and more than make up the points necessary to make the top 4. This year has to be the year to do it if we can though, it'll be just our luck that Liverpool finish 6th but City finish 4th.

It doesn't matter if we lose to Man Utd 2-0 up but Liverpool win when they are 2-0 up. This is true, I'm not denying it, but wham I'm focusing on this season is how we do. It's better if City, Villa, Liverpool, Arsenal, etc. lose points, but it doesn't matter if we aren't picking up points.

To win home and away against the 12 bottom teams (places 9 to 20) gives you a total of 72 points, which usually gives you a spot in the top 4. This will never happen, so let's say we draw 3 of those games and lose 3. That's 57 points. We should then be able to pick up 15-20 points of the other 7 teams (three already for that Liverpool win).

So I don't care if we lose against Man Utd or Wigan, win Sunderland or Liverpool. We just need points, wherever we can get them.

We've still yet to prove how good we really are on the road. The 3 teams we've beaten so far are bottom of the league, and we were lucky anyways to come away with 3 pts against Portsmouth. Our next 3 away games are against Arsenal, Aston Villa and Everton. It'll be interesting to see how many pts we can gather from these tough trips.

That is true.

Although it's hard to look away from the fact that we are currently leading the away table with 10 points from 5 games.

Out of the Sky 4 i think Liverpool are the most likely to drop out of the top 4 this season. But i also think Man City are the most likely to break into the top 4. I'll be happy if we finish top 6 this season.

For me on paper there is no doubt we have the better squad, Pool look well average beyond Torres, Gerrard, and Mascherano. But those 3 players are world class and make an enormous difference when they do play. Also it's about belief and mentality that the "top 4" have. As they have that label they have the feeling that they have a divine right to finish in the top 4.

Look at Arsenal last season and the season we nearly made it, while the fans and players of Villa last season and us a few seasons before panicked and ultimately folded, Arse just kept going and grinding out the results as they feel they deserve to be there. Last season I never really had any doubt that Arse would grab 4th.

Until we can have that belief it will always be difficult to break-through. So I think we can finish above them, but it's the players and staff that need to genuinely believe it. They need to believe that when we go away to teams like Fulham/ Stoke/ Wolves etc that we should be winning.

I notice from above that Villa have only played 3 away games - 2 less than us so you could say that their position is a bit false

I'd say we're odds-on to finish above Liverpool purely based on squad and form. I'm sure there'll be a reaction in their game against Man U but I can't see them winning it. They have a truly horrendous sequence coming up including Manu, Arse, Everton away, Man City, Portsmouth away. They could come out of those with just 3-4 points

We're now 4 points ahead of them and that could easily be closer to 10 going in to Xmas

I still think that Chelsea and ManU will pull away and leave us fighting with Citeh, Arse, Villa and perhaps the Scousers for the remaining 2 CL places

Well I see where you're coming from and I would be worried about the 'pressure' effect of this becoming common talk on TV and in the papers.

But.....this is a forum on which we discuss stuff  .....and my honest opinion is that we will be up there around about 4th towards the end of the season
