Can we give Chelsea some payback?

It seems that every time we look like we are going anywhere as a club someone comes in and taps up and steals our best player. It happened with Carrick and Berbatov and now Chelsea have unsettled Modric with their derisory bid. We know that complaining to the FA will get us nowhere so is there anything we can do?

This time I think the answer is yes. Chelsea have a new manager in Villas-Boas and it is quite likely that he will want to raid his old club Porto for a couple of players as most managers historically do. The most obvious candidate is Radamel Falcao. I think we should bid £40M for Falcao.

Admittedly this is probably £12M more than Levy would like to pay but it is a realistic price for a player who is showing in the Copa America that last seasons Wafer Cup form was no fluke. More to the point it's probably £15M more than Chelsea expect to pay for him.

There are 2 possible outcomes:

1/ Porto reject the bid or the player turns down the move.

This is the most likely scenario but at least Porto will expect Chelsea to match our bid if they want the player. We might only have pushed the price up by £10-15M but at least we have caused them some irritation in return at no cost to ourselves. In addition we send out a message that we are intent on at least trying to sign the very best players available which should at least reduce the idea among the squad that we have no ambition to compete at the very top level.

2/ We are successful and sign Falcao.

We have solved our major striking problem. Opinions may differ as to whether Falcao is the answer but although many might prefer a Llorente or a Rossi I doubt many would be devasted at us signing 'El Tigre'. We will be a more attractive proposition for other signings and if we sign another striker other clubs won't be able to screw us for silly money as we will have lost our 'air of desperation'. In addition Porto will have a nice full bank balance so any other players of theirs that Villas-Boas fancies will cost the Chavs that bit more.

Thoughts?

Like your thinking, but knowing Chelsea, they'll let us buy him, leave him on trial here for 2 years and then tap him up on a yacht.

The best way to give Chelsea some payback is to finish above them. It'll be hard but not impossible.

Best thing we can do is say to Chelsea, 'we value Modric at £40million+'.

Then sell him to someone abroad for £30million. Bayern, Inter, AC, Juve, Inter, Real Madrid or someone else like them. But, not Barca, as we want them to nab Fabregas back.

Falcao has a buyout of £26m apparently, so bidding 40 would be stupid. As far as bidding for him goes to annoy Chelsea, they could just bid the same and then blow us out of the water with wages.

Yeah that was sort of his point - to make them bid and pay far more than they'd want to.

Yea making them pay over the odds in a transfer fee and wages cause they've never done that before.

Tottenham bring such things upon themselves sometimes. We always give into the money. Like the rest of us I'm watching this drama around Modric...if we play the wounded bystander and come out with the muffle statement at the end of the transfer window 'oh it was Modric behaviour so we had to sell'...then we should just prepare ourselves for more of the same any time soon.

If we dare consider to again challenge the elite they'll use the same tactics and not allow us to eat from the round table, it's much easier for them to seat back and throw money at us, as we'll just get on our knees picking up the cash.

The only way to give Chelsea some payback is to not sell our best player to them, thus weakening our position and strengthening theirs.

Selling Luka to Chelsea, regardless of how much they are willing to pay, makes no sense whatsoever. We would be strengthening our rivals for the top 4 spots immesurably. You play Modric in that team, with the style of football that Villas Boas will play and Chelsea will be laughing long after we have cashed our cheque for £XX Million!!

Yes, a lot of this is about principles, but regardless, we should not sell Luka Modric (our best player) to a competitior. You would NEVER see any of the other top 4 or 5 clubs doing the same thing. If he HAS to be sold, he has to be sold abroad, and I don't care if the little shit stomps around and throws the toys out of his pram.

The moral of the story for poor little Luka is 'don't sign a brand shiny new contract with better wages unless you are willing to honour it'. I would also add, that this bullshit about a "gentleman's agreement" is bollocks. Since when, in this day and age (in football), does anyone in their right mind agree something that important without putting it in a contract. More fool him, and good on Levy for not wilting under the pressure.

THIS, THIS and THIS

I am despairing at anyone even considering that we should let Luka go to Chelsea. How the hell will we ever challenge if everytime one of our players gets tapped up we just bend over and let one of the richer teams shaft us?

Actually the best way to give Chelsea some payback is to prove that they tapped up Luka and give them a transfer embargo for two years and dock them points for this season...

But their hot shot lawyers will just get them off the charges as always

Or number 3, we bid £40m, Porto accept, but we don't agree personal terms, we've unsettled the player, Porto then have to accept a lower offer from Chelsea, the Russian is laughing and we've exposed to the whole world how desperate we are for a striker and any future striker's price will be doubled. This seems the most likely outcome to me.

IF modric goes, the best thing we can do is get as much money and top talent from them in exchange.

If they want him that badly, then they really do have to pay for it

If Levy stands firm, just ignore the latest bid. Let them wait and on deadline day, just write the words f--- off on their offer sheet and fax back to them at 11:00p.m.

Your probably right that the FA wont do anything, but we should go it FIFA if we know and have proof they are tapping up Modric.

After the Kakuta situation a few seasons ago they might do something about it

The best way to get back at them would be by tapping up their young players like McEachran and Sturridge. Basically offer them greater wages and more first team opportunities and they will want to come here.
