Hey you're not wrong. The 5cm thing was to account for frame rate. When the Hawkeye stuff starts in 2023 the accuracy will be absurdly high. If stuff like this annoys you just wait for the crap you're gonna see at the world cup when it comes to offside.
Yeah I'm waiting for the 3D Hawkeye stuff to come in, it will be educational if nothing else for people. I'm not saying that offside wasn't extremely tight, but you get fans each week wailing "that's not offside!" whilst looking at single 2D images that lack depth or plain perception and are never exactly side-on to the event.
Ultimately though this was always my problem with VAR and why I cautioned against it when 99.9% of fans were demanding it. Yeah the odd howler will get removed, but the myriad of complexities will remain if not increase with cameras on it. If you've watched any other sports where there is a video ref then you know there are still many controversies and really it just shifts the human decision making, and all the factors and talking points that throws up, from the pitch to a studio. And it's no surprise when you're trying to deal in absolutes that offsides have become the main talking point.
