Tottenham could be set for a shock move for free agent Carlton Cole, after the striker was reported to have featured in a behind-closed-doors friendly for Andre Villas-Boas’ side.
Twitter was awash with rumours that former West Ham striker Cole, who was released from Upton Park at the end of last season, hit two goals against non-league Enfield Town at Spurs’ training ground today, with record signing Roberto Soldado also reportedly bagging a hat-trick.
But it is unclear whether the 29-year-old is being lined up for a place in Villas-Boas’ squad next term, or whether he is simply maintaining his fitness in the hope a top-flight club will move for him before the start of the season.

Reports last month suggested newly promoted Crystal Palace were keen on taking Cole to Selhurst Park, but any potential deal seems to have fallen by the wayside.
As for Tottenham, they are still on the lookout for a new frontman after Clint Dempsey quit White Hart Lane to join Seattle Sounders last weekend, while Emmanuel Adebayor could yet be on his way out of the club.

Look where all the constant Carlton Cole gags have ended up. It's like Peter Rampetamper all over again.

I think the following would pretty much be the reaction if we ever dared sign Carlton Cole

Honestly I'd take him as a third option on cheap wages (assuming Ade leaves). Would also allow a couple of the younger strikers like Kane or Obika to go out on loan and get quality time rather than sitting on the bench and making substitute appearances in the Europa League. Only 29 so on a one/two year deal or something we might break even or slightly profit on him (especially if it allows us to get Ade's wages off the books).
Not nearly as bad of a player as people make him out to be, he can finish and looking at the team we're building any striker will get chances.

2 goals in 27 games last year for West Ham. Yet people are willing to 'take him' as a third option. FFS.

We are so far above that it's ridiculous. He's a donkey.

He started 14 games and was a sub in 13. It's West Ham under Sam Allardyce, shit team that played half their games with their focus being not to get scored on...What's wrong with having a cheap third option that allows younger prospects to go out on loan and get quality playing time while allowing us to lower our wages with Ade gone? The whole point is that he'd probably play less than 5 games in the season.

There's nothing wrong with having a cheap third option, as long as it isn't Carlton fucking Cole.

So lets say we sell Defoe (or Adebayor, whatever floats your boat) and we start the season with Soldado, Adebayor and Cole. If either of Soldado/Adebayor get an injury, who do we have to call from off the bench if we need a goal? Carlton Cole.

We want to finish in the CL spots, why the fuck would we even contemplate signing him? West Ham didn't even want him ffs.

Who do you recommend as a cheap third option then?

The sad thing is that in 20 yrs or so, one of the gaggle of temps/alcoholics who obviously get paid a travel allowance in exchange for shitting out this diarrhoea under the Metro Sports Reporter monker will be standing up there, black tie all skew-whiff, accepting a journalism award.
