Very good player, surprised no one has taken s chance on him.
Obviously the Greek league is significantly weaker and Kyrgiakos didn't make a fantastic impression on the premier league for the Greeks but i think he has a massive upside Manolas.

We need a leader, an organizer type player. None of our CBs play that role. Neither Dawson or Kaboul have ever looked particularly assured when not playing alongside Ledley King, Vertonghen is brilliant technically but doesnt seem up for the task when the going gets tough. Vlad is tidy on the ball, and on his day looks a brilliant CB, but he strikes me as more of a partner to a leader, rather than a leader.

I think an older more experienced CB is the answer. Pace isnt as key to a high line as its made out to be. Positioning is. I think someone like Vlaar who demonstrated brilliant leadership in the world cup could organise our defence into a solid unit.

Kostas Manolas - 23, 6'2, Olympiakos

Very highly rated CB who impressed alongside Sokratis at the World Cup.

Pace is vital to the success of a high pressing game, I agree that we need a leader & organiser though

Its not tbf, players like Mertesacker, Terry, Hummel's etc can and have played in a high line and looked more than comfortable, rather than having pace you neer to be a good reader of the gsme and you have to know when to drop back as a unit.

Really bad example of players to give Mertesacker really struggles if any balls are played in behind him & he's put in a footrace, Do you not remember John Terry under AVB at Chelsea he was woeful & couldn't play the highline at all, even Hummels struggles with it at times,

I really like Inigo Martinez looks that balance of strong no nonsense and decent skills and reading and has looked better and better these last three seasons. Aymeric Laporte has had a great season and will no doubt go on to be a top CB but Bilbao have no intention of selling yet and when they do he has a big buy out

Besides if we assume Verts is staying it makes more sense to find a right sided CB, although Ogbonna or Umtiti who can also play LB and may well be comfortable playing on the right look very good options with Ogbonna the pick as he has that bit more experience and in a tougher league

I'd love us to be in for Phil Jones if Van Gaal was fool enough to sell him, but I don't see it. I've always liked De Vrij but he seems to be off to Napoli

I like what I have seen of both Papadopoulos and Tasci although very different players in many ways but both have had long term injuries so question marks there

Totally agree - I love what I've seen of Martinez. And I wouldn't be averse to Phil Jones either - he's young but he's been playing at the top for years. Martinez isn't much older IIRC though.

Mertasacker rarely looks out of place, thr only time he struggled was against Chelsea and Liverpool because they midfield didnt put any pressure on the ball although admitadely the back line should have dropped back. Terry didn't really struggle in a high line, he made one high profile error against Arsenal where he slipped and fell on his are and back then the media had a hard on for AVB and this supposed flawed high line. Hummel's has been playing in a high line for Dortmund and has been one of the very best defenders in Europe...

If we don't, it will be because Pochettino and Baldini are happy with what we've got, or unimpressed with what's available.

I'd like John Stones but would probably be overpriced or Everton wouldn't sell.

I'm sure we're trying... I think people really need to try to understand that it's not exactly a straight forward matter. not only do we need to identify a player, he needs to want to come, his club needs to want to sell, we need to agree a price that is fair and then we need to agree conditions of the sale and the players terms and conditions.

It's all well and good saying, "We should sign "insert name here", but we're not playing Football Manager here.

Why does this have to constantly be repeated?
