Key Points

  • The deadline for submitting the squad list to UEFA is 9 August, with one change being allowed before the first match on 17 or 18 August. That means Spurs need to finalise its transfers by 9 August for those players it wants for the Champions League. It also means Spurs need to decide before 9 August whether Woodgate will be fit enough for the Qualifying or Group Stages. (Nb Chelsea, Man U, and Arsenal enter the competition at a later stage and have until 1 September to submit their squad list, so Spurs are at a disadvantage).
  • At least 4 players in Spurs 25 man squad must be ‘club trained’. Spurs have 6 (King, Bale, Huddlestone, O’Hara, Lennon and Crouch). Given King’s knee being unlikely to last for more than a season or two at best, and the only way to increase the number of ‘club trained’ players is to wait for the likes of Livermore, Rose, Townsend, Caulker et al to play regular first team football (which I cannot see before 1 or 2 more seasons), I doubt whether Spurs have any real wish to sell any of these six players – if Spurs have less than 4, the squad size reduces by the shortfall which would mean the squad being reduced to 22 – 24 players. Indeed I can see Harry putting his arm round Jamie’s shoulder to whisper ‘Champions League’ in his ear.
  • At least 8 players (including the 4 above) have to have been trained within English FA registered clubs. Spurs currently have 13 such players so there is no problem, and the addition of players trained by English clubs is not a problem.
  • There is a limit of 25 players in the squad, but there is no room for Naughton in my 25 man squad below - but could be if Woodgate fails to be fit or the long rumoured Hutton transfer takes place. Otherwise it would mean another loan for him.
  • There is room in the 25 man squad for Gudjohnsen or another new striker - but not both.
  • The rule allowing players under 21 to be in addition to the 25 allows players such as Dos Santos to play. These extra players who must be under 21 at 1 January 2010 are included as List B, which can be submitted to UEFA 24 hours before each tie.
  • Spurs have a large squad so that for every new transfer in - such as the long rumoured Joe Cole Transfer - one existing player needs to be sold
I haven’t seen any summary on this or any other Spurs forum and as these rules are a first for Spurs and me, please feel free to read and check the information yourselves using this link.

The rules are similar to those for the Premier League (see my summary http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=62092 ), but with important differences, and are more onerous on Spurs than those for the Premiership..

Detailed Rules

Each Club must submit a ‘List A’ and a ‘List B’ of players :

List A

This has 25 players of which 8 must be locally trained within English FA registered clubs, and of those 8 at least 4 must have been trained by the club (‘Club Trained’) itself and a maximum of 4 trained by other clubs registered with the English FA (‘Association Trained’),
  • A “club-trained player” is a player who, between the age of 15 (or the start of the season during which he turns 15) and 21 (or the end of the season during which he turns 21), and irrespective of his nationality and age, has been registered with his current club for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons (i.e. a period starting with the first official match of the relevant national championship and ending with the last official match of that relevant national championship) or of 36 months
  • The definition of ‘Association Trained’ is similar to club trained, other than the reference to ‘current club’ is replaced by ‘Clubs registered with the English FA.
  • Spurs enter the competition at the ‘Qualifying Stage’, so need to submit the Squad list by 9 August 2010.
  • One Player on List ‘A’ can be changed up to 24 hours before the first match (17 or 18 August).
  • For matches starting with last 16 match stage, up to 3 new players can be changed in List A by 1 February 2011, but the rules around 8 locally trained players must be maintained. There are detailed rules about the eligibility of these 3 players relating to playing previously in Champions League and/or Europa League.
  • If the Club cannot reply on at least 2 goalkeepers (through long term injury or illness), there are rules allowing an additional goalkeeper to be temporarily substituted onto List A up to 24 hours before a match..
List B

Clubs can register an unlimited number of players on List B if they is born on or after 1 January 1989 (ie 21 on that date) and have been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthday by the time they are registered with UEFA. Players aged 16 may be registered on List B if they have been registered with the participating club for the previous two years without interruption. Registration of List B with UEFA can take place 24 hours before any match and the list may change with each match.

So if you have reached this far, how credible are rumours of sales of Crouch to Liverpool, Bale to Inter Milan, O’Hara to others ? Who would Spurs want to sell from the 25 man squad above, and who brought in ?

I'd heard that the qualifying is seperate to the CL proper so if we qualify we'd then be able to make use of the extended deadline of which Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal have? That seems rather unfair if we can't register anyone after August 9th

If we are getting rid of O Harra, Hutton, Keane, Dos Santos etc... This will fee up space. Harry always said we needed to sell before we can buy in order to ballance the squad.

Is worrying that clubs haven't made any bids for those players though. None were at the WC (apart from DS) and pre-season has started for most clubs. Villa, Newcastle etc all need to get their fingers out.

Thanks for putting this together.

However, the above is a little out of context. It is unlikely that all four existing strikers will remain at the club if Gud and another come in. You surely mean 'room for 5 strikers'... as is to be expected in a 25 man squad.

thanks for this - i raised this question a few days back re getting our transfers done but was told we didn't have to worry about the qualifying round - well apparently we do

i also asked about sandro - was told it wasn't a worry - but how can he be registered with two clubs at the same time?

don't we need to actually get him registered by aug 9? i know he's 'signed' but is he registered? if he is - how is he playing for another club - is it a kind of loan?
