I don't know if there are any other threads already with this theme or if this is the right place for this type of thread, if so, then mods, please feel free to merge this with those.

With all the names being bandied about, I was wondering how realistic it is that we will actually sign someone of say, Villa's 'dimension'? Other names included are Damiao and Soldado amongst others. Something that they all have in common however is...?

Their price tag. Each of them is going to cost a pretty penny. So, with this in mind, I thought it would be fun at the least to discuss cheaper, less well known alternatives.

And so, the first position that we should nominate candidates for is the most pressing: Striker (Centre forward, Attacker, False No:9, reverse defender, whatever.....)

Jonathan Soriano

RedBull Salzburg

Valued at £1.8m on transfermarket.com.uk and having just finished the first year of a three and a half year contract, this 27 y/o Spanish CF has scored goals pretty much all through his career. The exception being when he has been farmed out on loan.

Without the loans included he has career scoring stats of played 237 and scored 123. These figures represent him scoring just slightly more then a goal every other game. A ratio of; 1 : 0.52

His on loan performance is comparably low. His on loan stats read as, played 40 and scored 9. This puts his scoring ratio at about half as much as he has managed when not on loan. A ratio of; 1 : 0.225

On the surface of things he seems like a real goal getter. Someone who when is settled at a club will regularly bang in the goals. Thing is however, not all of his goals have been scored in the top flight. In fact, when he played in the Spanish Primera Liga he went through his most barren spell in front of goal (played 43, scored 3) albeit over a seven year period (the information is unclear over this however). Is this a reflection that he cannot cope at the very top? He has gone to Austria and in Bundesliga he has somewhat redeemed himself with an impressive 29 goals in 41 appearances.

With him coming in to his peak years the opportunity for re-sale is small but not so small that it couldn't be done, it just a case of how well the player would do if he was signed up by a new side.

2001 - 2005 Espanyol B..........Apps 69 Gls 32
2002 - 2009 Espanyol.............Apps 43 Gls 3
2006 - Loan Almeria...............Apps 17 Gls 6
2007 - Loan Poli Elido.............Apps 12 Gls 2
2009 - Loan Albacate..............Apps 11 Gls 1
2009 - 2012 Bacelona B..........Apps 84 Gls 59
2012 - Now RedBull Salzburg..Apps 41 Gls 29

He appears to have a good first touch and close control, he is able to score a variety of goals, uses both feet and also shows lightening quick reflexes as can be seen in his clip with him reacting to a missed shot coming at him extremely fast and directing it in to the goal.

If you're looking at the Austrian Bundesliga then Philipp Hosiner is another good striker. Scores for fun over there. Only issue is the quality of opposition. Heard Ajax are interested, and even heard a rumour of Dortmund from a German friend of mine.

Haven't we just brought an unknown from overseas for peanuts and he's hardly improved on what was already here. It's a gamble that in the majority of cases rarely pays off.

Wilfred Zaha

Oh wait...

Fucking wasting money on John Bostock, Palace were in administration and we could have bought Zaha on the cheap

I dont see the point in buying of buying young relatively unknown players if they are only going to get lost in our development squad

But Zaha, really? He is overrated .

He's clearly talented but his price tag might well wear heavy on him plus as good an opportunity as it is to play at Old Trafford, it can easily be overwhelming and will either make him or break him.

Yeah like the last 17 year old winger with lots of flicks and tricks who Man Utd bought for big money, the price tag really overwelmed him, now currently worth 80 million and banging them in for Real Madrid

If we need a cheap striker on relatively modest wages, I'd sign Ricky Lambert because of his 100% penalty scoring record (31 out of 31 for Southampton). I've often suspected that referees never award us penalties because they want to spare our players' feelings.
