Because we aren't paying down a mortgage, we aren't struggling to make ends meet. When new money comes in (TV, prizes, CL) we don't have to pay off one credit card and put Kane's wages on another. There are several massive new revenue streams and we should have more money and ambition that buying with outgoing.
Actually, we have debt to pay down already and have a £300m loan facility coming our way to help with the stadium since £600m+ is a shit load of money to have to come up with.

Not fussed really. End of the day, he would have been a number 2 striker. I was skeptical of this transfer once the fee went north of 30m.Forget Palace or WestHam willing to paying 30m, its not a good deal to pay 30m for a back up.

Now, we go to next tier strikers - Janssen & Sanabria. Poch has good track record with strikers. So, I would back him to get the best out of them.

Around €40 Million is ridiculously overpriced for him.

He is still a very raw technical footballer, and has had his attitude questioned in the past, just hope we can get Vj done and soon.

Surely the reverse smokescreen has something to do with chelsea stuff in media and palace stuff in media?!! Palace is media jargon so then OM release that Chelsea want him to force our hand? :coffee:

Record TV money, Champions League group stage qualification, and the most promising future in the last decade.

And we're out there buying budget players with Townsend proceeds. Same old story. Really disappointing. More so now because of how great the chance to build on our success is.

I really do not understand this mindset. The club has an absolutely abysmal record of big money signings, it has a fantastic one when it comes to value signings. And yet so many completely ignore this, ignore that last seasons supposedly lesser budget players like Alderwield, Ali and Wimmer played a massive role in our success last season. The clamour is always for high profile, high value players that this is only route for success. It's just complete nonsense. We missed out of Michy, so bloody what.

Pochettino has already said we need to be smarter in the transfer market to compete with the big spenders. Realistically we don't have €40m to be throwing down on a single player.

Vincent Janssen is a much more sensible buy.

With 40m, Chelsea can bid for Morata or Lukaku

Think we get Vincent and Sana before pre-season. Batshit is good but 100k/w is a risk.

This is no slight on Janssen but it must be said that it's a huge gamble to expect a 1 season wonder striker from the Dutch league to be our back up to Kane. Kane has been flogged to death by us & the national team the last 20 odd months. He needs to be rested & have a proper back up to come in if he picks up a serious injury. Is Janssen really that man?

For the first time in god knows how many years/decades we didn't need wholesale changes to our playing staff. We only needed 3 TOP CLASS players to come in & compete/rotate with our midfield/attacking midfield/striker. Signing top class usually means you have to pay the going rate. We've tracked Batshuayi for over 6 months only to baulk at the price when push came to shove. Surely it was made clear from early on the fee OM would ask/wages he'd demand. Why continue pursuing him if we clearly couldn't afford him? Every single season we have this same joke , when will we ever learn!!!

Can't believe people are throwing tantrums. 40m euros for a striker that wouldn't likely start? No thanks, that's far too expensive.

Have you not seen the way prices are this season after the Sky cash injection? 30m for Troy wotsit? 34m for Mane? It doesn't matter who we buy we'll be paying more than usual and lets not forget that it isn't a question of which striker will start, more a question of having the quality in the squad when required. If we really want to compete then lets trust Poch to make Batshuayi not so much a second choice but an equally viable first choice. They'll get enough games between them. But overall, I think for the next season or so, the price cannot be judged on previous seasons, clubs overseas and in the UK know we're all cash rich at the moment and are, quite rightly, taking advantage, the evidence is there for all to see.

If we really wanted him, it could've been done ages ago. This has been kicking on for weeks.

must be someone else we're after.

We might of wanted him but he was too expensive. We were never going to pay that much for a player. I suggest that was the problem more than anything else. We aren't financially doped like Chelsea, we can't just pay whatever we want for players and not care if they fail.

I think the influx of TV money has created chaos in the market. Who foresaw West Ham and Crystal Palace throwing big big money at Batshuayi? That got OM redressing their price, to a level we obviously didn't feel was reflective of either, his talent, or, our need for him. Why pay over the odds just because someone else wants to.
There has been numerous comments about how Poch likes players with the right mentality and work ethic, that may not be the finished article but he can refine them through coaching. If we sign a 22yr old who was top scorer in his league last year, and has carried that form into international football to show he's capable of stepping up, and has shown he wants to come to us, plus is available at a fee we deem sensible, why is that viewed by some as a bad thing??

If Levy does not have £40m to spend on one player Spurs will be well down the pecking order this year. The market has moved. Not that we should spend this on Batman.

If that was who MP wanted why did we not just go and buy him now. As the pond gets smaller there will be heavy competition for the minnows.

People keep saying that about the Dutch league and Janssen but from what I've seen over the last few seasons, the defending in the premier league is hardly exceptional. If anything it's got worse, so I'm less worried about that.

Does the selling club or the player and his agent get any say in your world ? We may well want to buy now but most likely the selling club and the player want to keep their options open to see what offers come in.

Just because other teams are paying over the odds for average players such as Deeney and Mane doesn't mean we should. If we have a chance to sign someone for 20m euros less and who seems to still be capable for doing a good job (Janssen), then I don't see why we should splash out such ridiculous money for one players.

We also have other areas of the squad to improve, it's not just a striker position. So if we splash out 40m euros on one player, that's going to leave us with nothing to get other players that improve the squad and could likely lead to more bargain players that we have to move on in a year.

People can cite all this extra revenue, but as a club/business grows, your expenses also increase. It's not just players that we spend money on. Then of course we have a stadium and it's better to clear your debt out sooner rather than later.

Its an example of how the market is this year. Regardless of the ability of the player. Its all relative, if 'average' players are going for £30m + then you're going to be asked for more for the 'better' ones. It isn't a question of if other teams are doing it we don't have to, that's how the market is this year, its undeniable.

Reading this you'd think Batshuayi was the only striker being transferred this summer and that now we've run out of time and options.

I'll wait to see what we do before paining it black.
