What's worrying is not just the way we defended and had so little control in midfield, but even when we had the ball we didnt construct one decent attacking move.

We're not good enough on or off the ball at the moment.

I actually think our lack of ability on the ball is the biggest problem. When teams let us have it we struggle to break them down...and when they press us we cant cope and cough it up way to often or easily.

Nope not having this why are we surprised bullshit.

They have a better squad but the gulf isnt that big ffs.

They just didnt play better, they wanted it more...which of course always helps performance.

The difference in appetite was stark I thought.

We need rid of some of these players, their attitude isn't good enough.
Agreed. A winning attitude would be nice - both on and off the pitch. I remember the early days of Liverpool’s resurgence under Gerard Houlier, and what he said about winning one of the so-called smaller European trophies. While some fans and pundits were critical of his “best eleven plays” approach and the apparent lack of priority given to the league campaign, he spoke of how a winning team first needs to understand what it means to actually win. We would do well to embrace this thinking and stop dismissing competitions such as the Europa Conference as some kind of inconvience.

We’ve managed to put together a squad of average players with no desire, hunger, bravery, or intelligence. Most of them will sit deep during a game as it’s easier than pushing forward and trying to force the other team back. We have 8 defensive players because none of them want to get forward in case they have to run back again.

When Poch came in the first thing he said to the defence was to be brave and play higher up, though it did help having quality midfielders who could actually keep the ball for more than 2 seconds. Now we have players like Hojbjerg who can’t do much except shake his fists when occasionally tackling someone as though it’s a big achievement.

Whoever did the scouting on Ndombele, Doherty, Lo Celso, Gollini, and Sanchez needs to be put in front of the board for a proper talk. How can we get it wrong on so many players and waste over £100m on duds?!?! Let’s not forget our “recruitment team” also recommended and brought in Fernandes on loan, and he played less than a dozen games.

I think it was a bit ambitious to go to Stamford Bridge and start with 3 up front. An extra body in midfield would have slowed them down IMO. We let them pass around us way too easily. We're lucky to still be in with a shot, albeit an unlikely one, in the second leg.

Not sure what’s worse the mentality of the players or the fans . We played a depleted chelsea team , yes we missed 2 or 3 aswell but last week I saw a Brighton team with the likes Maupay, Lalana dominate Chelsea for almost an entire game . Burnley and Everton drew there recently and all these teams created a fair few chances , suddenly we’re worse than these teams ? Last night was pathetic let’s not hide behind a gulf in class cos this isn’t a prime chelsea team in top form . Who gives a f&ck if they won the champions league , we got to the final and were dreadful before and after the final . Until the club changes it’s mentality we will continue to accept these mediocre performances .

There are many things I find galling about last nights performance, but the most galling thing was the most predictable and predicted - we were awful, but the the goals they scored were not because they are a better team (though they clearly are) - we handed both goals to them on a silver platter gift wrapped with pretty ribbons and bows.

I was whatsapping a friend of mine before the game - as usual we give our predictions. My prediction was that even if we played well and were the better team, we would shoot ourselves in the foot at some point and hand Chelsea the initiative. I have no powers of prophecy sadly, but this is what we do in big games, especially semis and finals.

The comfort I have is that surely we won't be that poor again on Wednesday and they should have had 6 but they couldn't score and we had to do it for them. We have a home FA cup leg which we should be able to rest a few of them for and then we are back on Wednesday at home against a team who believe they have already beaten us and are in the final. An early 1st half goal and it's game on. Obviously we will end up going out on penalties and then it will all fall apart again but we have hope

It was so frustrating to see how easily and quickly they passed and found their man and we lost it within a couple of passes. We have no creativity in midfield, nobody who can hold on to the ball and pick a killer pass. The other surprise is why pick Doherty who is out of form in his right position and play him out of position on the left?

The biggest difference between the team's was the crisp and accurate first time passing. We have players capable of it, I've seen it with my own eyes, but where's the confidence?

Well said, for me the biggest sliding doors moment in the last hundred years was RA taking over Chelsea and not us. Other way round, we quickly overtake a bankrupt Chelsea and resume our traditional supremacy over them. We almost certainly go on then to become a European super power instead of them
Breaks my heart to think about the might have beens ? But we'll always have 2008 and Jonathan Woodgate ?
Also, I think we might just get one more season out of Conte. But we need to buy well this month and the summer. We also need to get lucky. Of all the times for Dier to fall ill, while Romero was injured. Then a barely played Rodon picks up a knock, while both our LWBs are injured too. It's beyond depressing, truly we are cursed. We are the Job of football clubs,. Which footballing God or Gods did we offend in some far off days or lands?

Id genuinely prefer we were playing league 2 than be owned by Abramovich.
Exactly, gio, you took the words out of my mouth.
And Levy does care about the club and success, he just has screwed up many opportunities.

“They have an owner who has pumped billions into the club”. I think it would be more accurate to say that they have an owner who has to pump billions into the club. Allegedly, of course.
Makes no difference to me how you word it.
They have become a European super power, we have one Lge Cup in twenty years

That's fine, each to their own. I'd prefer to be European champions
It is of course everybody's right to hold their own views on who they want as owner.
But I can't understand the mentality of "I would rather be in the championship than have a Russian own us".
Nowhere in the world of commerce is there nice businessmen who care about morality and such like it doesn't exist because they are driven by money and are ruthless.
I am envious of Chelsea's success in recent years I would be lying if I said I wasn't, but I realise we are owned and managed by different people who are happy to tick over as we are generating huge turnover without success.

Very true but as a club we have to stop keep bemoaning our luck because we are missing player A or B.
We also have to stop keep saying well we were playing the champions of Europe so what do we expect.
This level of second best acceptance from the fanbase and the club hierarchy.
Nobody wants to be 2nd best but a level of acceptance is required to keep perspective, I'm pretty sure if I got in a ring with Tyson Fury I would be 2nd best, and I accept that!
I have faith that once Conte can bring in some fresh blood to the squad we can start to improve, it wont be quick enough for some but we have to have faith I guess

This isn't just about stepping into the ring with a superior opponent as you stated.
Rather this is about a cycle of constant failure in big games that stretches back decades because we have had enough of it.
Yes it will take time because it always does and then another thing goes wrong and sets it all back to zero again we never seem to be in a position of strength.
I don't think Conte will be happy with what we eventually serve up and I fully expect him to be off at the earliest opportunity.

I hope he's including himself in his assessment of 'lacking fight', because it's a team game with joint responsibility for performances. It's better to keep these type of post mortem comments behind closed doors IMO.

Yet almost everybody on here also thinks that playing PEH and Skipp together is not working and that we should use other midfielders.

And will have just witnessed us being absolutely bummed until we brought on TND, Winks, Lo Celso. And then suddenly we had a lot of possession and a couple of chances

Conté lost us this game and it's about time he stopped this point-making / experiment / mistake

A couple of chances? We never seriously threatened. Those subs did absolutely nothing. He's not making a point. I wish people would stop with that notion. We heard it with Mourino and even Poch. The reality is the players picked are deemed the best available. If you seriously think that a guy like Conte who trains with these players every day knows less than a bunch of people on a forum, you may need to reconsider your logic.
