Two free-kicks in a week to show why Christian Eriksen might just be European football's Next Big Thing, the Dane continues his one-man mission to prove that Tottenham's summer 2013 transfer business wasn't a complete disaster.
It's very easy to forget that Eriksen is still 22. Next month he will gain his 50th international cap, and alongside Kane is responsible for dragging Spurs into the race for the top four. His is an understated brilliance, but it should not be under-estimated.

Two years ago Alex Ferguson lavished the praise on Eriksen. "We have many young players at the club, but we are always looking for talent," Ferguson said. "It's impossible to predict." Johan Cruyff is also a big fan, calling Eriksen "a player I really like with all my heart". High praise indeed.

The only surprise is that Spurs were able to land a player of such potential. There will be many worried that it is a case of when, rather than if, a Superclub comes calling. The Dane is a different type of player, but Real Madrid paid €80m for James Rodriguez at 23 last summer. At seven months younger, I'd say Eriksen has as much ability as the latest Galactico.

Presumably it's only a surprise for Irish Man Utd fans et al who think that every player with a modicum of talent should be snapped up by a handful of elite clubs. Fucking modern football.

I don't get it? Eriksen himself said he has his own 'plan'. While admittedly we are a stepping stone in his career, I am certain he is starting to feel real passion for us after proving himself here. He's still very young too. At 22 , and with his forecasted path, I don't think he'll leave until he's about 25.So at lest another two or three seasons and in his prime going to a super club and winning everything in sight. I'm more concerned about losing Lloris or Vertonghen as they are much older.

Perhaps that's why we're interested in youngster like Alli. Develop them as eventual replacement for Eriksen.

Is Eriksen underrated, or is James Rodriguez overrated, because, in my opinion, there really isn't much difference between the two players.

James is 86 on FIFA and Eriksen is 82. Really?

Christian Eriksen has the 2nd best goals to games ratio of anyone in the Premier League era before their 23rd birthday. He is outperforming some great names there.

Amazing, still banging on about our transfers almost being a disaster, yet liverlol spent more and more on total shite and not a peep out of the media for that

That goal ratio for Bale is quite impressive given that going by wiki about 40 of those league appearances were as a left back.

Is this a joke? James Rodriguez was one of the best performers at the world cup and has done brilliantly for Real Madrid this season, despite being played out of position. IMO he is among the best players under 25 with only Neymar, Muller, Kroos and Bale being at a similar level. Eriksen has a lot of potential but is not close to that level yet.

Tell me what aspects Rodriguez is better than Eriksen because in my mind the level above Eriksen is world class a class reserved for very few players and one excellent standout season certainly does not warrant such an accolade.

Eriksen would probably do brilliantly if he was at Madrid. I didn't say Eriksen was better, but the gap between the two players isn't as big as people make it out to be.

Rodriguez has been excellent for the last 4 seasons, there is a reason that at only 23 years his combined transfer fees are at 130 million euros. Im sorry Eriksen is excellent, but some of the things Rodriguez can do are just inhuman. The idea that they are at a comparable level would be rightfully laughed at by other teams fans. Seriously have people actually seen Rodriguez play? The guy will win a ballon d'or before he is done.

He is a better dribbler, better striker of the ball, better movement off the ball and is quick too. Rodriguez is like an Eriksen, Bale hybrid.

Because 2 super-rich teams were prepared to pay ridiculous and undeserved sums of money?

I agree with what @C0YS is saying here.

Whilst Christian is good, I think he still lacks some key attributes from his game in order to really round him off as one of the 'top' attacking midfielders.

I think the goals that Christian has scored have been quite narrow in terms of variance. We've seen James Rodriguez score some pretty impressive goals, those which can come from nowhere and end up in the top corner, plus some pretty inventive play. Currently, Christian seems to either score goals from direct free kicks, or swept shots from the edge of the box that end up relatively low in the corners. I haven't yet seen him develop the strengths that the likes of Lampard or Robben score and/or create.

I'm struggling to explain in words what I mean, but he's done really well and is still at an early age in his development.
