Our trouble, as supporters, is that we look at these situations through lilywhite coloured spectacles hankering after the days when our players were our players. We expect the players to adore the club like we do and to play like it as well. That rarely happens any more.
My local hosted Graham Roberts and Mickey Hazard a few months ago and they were both in agreement that their generation of players are the last that engaged with the fans and still classed Spurs as 'their club'.
I think what I'm trying to say is that while Eriksen is a Spurs player I'll be right behind him. If he chooses to take the King's shilling I'll carry his bag to wherever the fuck he's off to.

Would explain the out of the nowhere links with PSG. Cant see them being in for him myself so if the Express are right (unlikely) then he is in contract talks and the link will just be his agent getting him a better deal. I suspect he will sign a new one with us shortly.

I don't think anyone put forward that notion but fair enough. Obviously agents and clubs use the press but Eriksen is still young, it would be unusual for us to sell him at this stage when his value will keep going up. It would just be very unlike Levy to pull the trigger on this one so soon unless PSG offered mega bucks or some less than likely player plus cash deal.
People regularly say without quotes the story shouldn't be believed. Which is bollocks.
That's not how news/gossip works.

More like "people" are saying without quotes don't believe or disbelieve it and even then it's mainly used as a response to those who start laying into a player based on what they've read or falling for a headline which is pushing a single negative agenda. Really though these "people" are individuals with different opinions on the different sides of a story so generalising doesn't really mean much anyway.

A bit of common sense is all that's needed when dealing with these stories, "Eriksen snubs new deal" could just mean he's been offered a new contract and his agent is trying to negotiate better terms, we have no idea. It doesn't make sense to just assume a player wants out or isn't commited based on such limited information. Time and time again though, we see reactions to the headline rather than the substance of the article.

Someone mentioned the Bale media campaign which resulted in his move to Madrid but before that he was linked by articles like this one to Man Utd, Barcelona, PSG, Man City and even Liverpool at one point. All our players get linked with moves that will never happen, the reason quotes are valuble is because it lets us be more confident when forming our opinion but even then you have to separate the quote from the spin.

@OptaJoe: - Christian Eriksen has scored 11 Premier League goals in 2014; Touré (14) and Gerrard (12) are only midfielders with more.
No pens in Eriksen's stats.

If only we had a formation that made the best use of his talent rather than needing him to cover the full backs. Someone big will have to be sacrificed I reckon, I'm just glad I'm not Pochettino on this one.

I loved, just loved his dummy, turn and run against Palace. Only bettered by Bolasie and Zaha's skills in a match when Eriksen, Lloris and the two palace dudes shone

We should play Eriksen behind someone like Benteke who can play upfront on his own.

Kane can be a sub to take the pressure off of him.

Add either Kono or J.Rodriguez for the left wing spot, schierderlin for cm and a CB (Moreno or Shawcross) and we'd have a far better balanced team.

Sell the likes of Paulinho, Soldado, Capoue, etc to raise funds.

From reading the danish press Eriksen wants to continue picking up his form rather than focus on contract talks.

Which in my opinion is the way it should be.

Contract talks should happen during the off season so that players can concentrate on their football.

One "problem" with Spurs is that all their top/world class players (Carrick, Modric, Bale, Berba) they have sold have excelled in their new teams. And no there is no guarantee that even a world class won't flop/play poorly. Maybe it's because Spurs - for many decades - have yet to establish a well-functioning "Spurs way" of playing, so when they move to another clubs it's easier for them to adjust than, say, a player from ManU or Arsenal (Henry, Pires, Overmars etc were all flops in their new clubs)

I love this Google Translation of this extract from the Dutch BT article:

"Tottenham boss Daniel Levy is very careful to reward its players for strong performance with new contracts, so he can reverse also sell them more expensive when the big clubs knocking on the door."

And similar to those two, Eriksen will be as good as he is now, if not better, in 6/7/8 years from now because of his style of play. I'm not sure how true that is for many other mids as good and as young as he is right now.

If we could keep one current player on until the end of his career, I'd have a hell of a time trying to choose between him and Lloris. Not only the skill, but the consistency and class they both show on and off the pitch is the type of thing that makes me proud to support Spurs no matter where we land in the table.

Then choose 2 ;)

I'd be surprised if that many, if any, 'elite' clubs come in for him. He's very talented but is a bit lightweight and isn't the best at tracking back. There aren't many clubs with the status and resources to prise him off us, and pretty much every club at that level is becoming increasingly obsessed with attacking midfielders players that are super talented and do a good defensive shift - see Mata's descent from one of the most highly rated players in the league to someone who doesn't start regularly for Man U

The tracking back would certainly be a concern for them, but his size would be of no concern to anyone in Spain or Germany. The problem with Eriksen is his lack of tenacity. He's far too passive in the physical department, and I think it makes him appear weaker than he is. But nonetheless, Spanish teams place physicality say down the priority list compared to things like technical ability, flair, vision, and precision - all of which Eriksen has, some of which in abundance.

It would appear that Eriksen's agent has put contract talks on hold till the summer! From £35,000 to £60,000.
Is he waiting to see where we finish?

Read what you will into this.

http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/544977/Christian-Eriksen-snubs-Tottenham-contract

An increase to £60k would, in my opinion, be laughable!! This kid has come in and worked his socks off. Yes his form has diipped at times, but he's a very slight lad in a very physical league. However, whilst he's done all he can to improve at THFC, and make no mistake, he has improved, he's also been witness to the likes of Adebayor showing absolutely no respect to 2 of the 3 managers that we've had since Eriksen signed for us, but still be earning anywhere between £175k p/w and £200k p/w, depending upon which source you read.

I'll be honest, if I was Eriksen, and I'd seen such a disrepsectful & unprofessional person collecting £175k per week, yet I've been working my socks off to get better and be part of the team, I'd take that £60k wage offer and wipe my LilyWhite arse with it!!

We should be building our side around a talent like Eriksen, bringing in or using players that will compliment his natural game, and allow him the freedom to express himself freely on the pitch.

Look at the money we're literally spunking away on midfielders alone... Stambouli, Capoue, Paulinho, Bentaleb, Eriksen, Mason, Ceballos, Eriksen, Lennon, Townsend, Lamela, Chadli, Dembele....

That's THIRTEEN midfielders we've got on the payroll, and I've not included Holtby (who Poch has admitted would've got lots of game time had he stayed). We do NOT need 13 bloody midfielders, 14 if we include Holtby. We really NEED to do all we can to shift some out, even if it means losing a few quid on what we paid for them. After-all, each midfielder will be earning a minimum of £2mil p/a, and that, over a period of time, will amount to much more than what we could lose in transfer fees. Weed a few out & then use the money saved on wages to give a better salary to those who are deserving of it.

Who could go? Well I really don't see Paulinho as being one for what Poch wants, and I'm not too sure he's sold on Townsend, Lennon and Dembele. Who knows anything about Ceballos? It wouldn't surprise me if Pochettino would happily lose Dembele, Paulinho, Capoue, Lennon and Townsend. He certainly doesn't appear to have them as first names on his team-sheet. Why would he? Mason and Bentaleb have acquitted themselves excellently, Stambouli just seems full of hunger and desire every time he's been called upon, so that's 3 players for the 2 deep-lying role, which is good because it should see all of them getting enough time on the pitch to keep them happy.

I'm still somewhat baffled as to what Dembele brings to the party? I was shocked when I recently read that Les Ferdinand admitted they (he and Sherwood) continually told Dembele that he could easily follow Bale to Real Madrid. Sorry but I just don't see it, unless they meant he could carry Bales kit bag for him! Seriously, what is it he does for us? YES he's unbelievably strong & almost impossible to knock off the ball (I do LOVE watching players bounce off him), but what does he do with that ball? From what I've seen, he either runs into 5 players and loses it, or he passes it to an opponent, even if his own team-mate is only 3 yards away.

I hate bashing our own players, I really do. But when it comes to the future of our club, the club that we love & have spent a lifetime investing money & love into, I just want what is best for our club both now & in the future. It's no secret that Pochettino is very excited by the youngsters we have at THFC, and that's why I wouldn't complain if some of the so called 'superstars' were weeded out & left us with a more refined & hungry squad. There's no place for sentiment in football, but there are certain players that we simply MUST keep. Those are the important ones to me!!

Apologies for the essay
