Back in about 2017 I was watching a Spurs game with a neighbour and my son and I said how much we rated Eriksen, he said I don't rate him. I was shocked as to me he was our heartbeat and everything going forward pretty much came from him. I would welcome him back all day every day.

Continuing discussion in the proper thread

Eriksen didn't play a single match under Antonio Conte as part of the 'front 3'. He was never a False 9 or shunted on the wing.

If he was brought on, or started, it was almost ALWAYS in the middle of a CM3 with Barella/Brozovic. He was sometimes at the head of it in an AM role, but he NEVER played the Lautaro role, not once in his entire career.

I know this vividly and for a fact, bc I followed Inter's title run in spring 2021 when he featured regularly. Eriksen was not only a CM in nomenclature, he would be effectively a deep-lying playmaker at times, although he had license to get forward.

Conte is not going to take a 30 year old and change him into a full time winger. I'm sure he'll play matches in the Deki role but Conte knows his best football comes centrally - we may end up going 3-4-1-2 or 3-5-2. And it's not like Conte has never played a 3 man midfield with us, quite the opposite (See Liverpool, Chelsea matches this winter). 2 man midfield is not a rigid, unchanging requirement for him. Eriksen will likely play in a midfield 3 if he starts, but he did play in a CM2 occasionally for Conte's Inter in stretches. Additionally, he and Brozovic stayed at home while Barella went on maniac runs from the CM. Christian could play in a double pivot vs. a lower side, even if he doesn't do it full time, he's not incapable of it.

Look at his positioning in the clips here vs. AC Milan. Does that look like a winger or striker to you?

Would it be accurate to say he mostly played on the left of a 3 for Inter, and sometimes as 1) part of a deep lying two 2) and sometimes as the 10 in front of a deep lying two?

If so, that gives us a lot of tactical flexibility.

I always remember how toxic it got towards Eriksen. How many of those who constantly slated him now want him back, and why?

Is he a better player nowadays or will they turn on him again as his first corner doesn't clear the first defender or his first free kick goes straight into the wall.
As for his first tackle, will it even happen and will he vilified again for not getting stuck in etc etc
I am neutral as to getting him back, and if he returns, will back him. Then again I never turned on him like so many of our fanbase did.

In his last season he was a yard or so off the pace, the question is why?
For me, it could be one of two things.
The league got quicker/more intense under the influence of Guardiola/Klopp etc leaving the more creative players behind a bit. Moving to a lower paced league solves this.
Or Eriksen had just lost his edge playing for us. But after his health issues he looked a lot more committed playing for Brentford and Denmark.

My view is it costs virtually nothing to find out. And worst case scenario he can still be used in a central 3 in games where 'running about a bit' isn't as important where teams are sitting back or as a sub when the tempo has slowed.

I’ve found that you can quickly single out people who don’t understand football by their views on players like Eriksen and Modric.

And Dembele/Carrick.
I think Dembele was one of the most underrated players of the Premier league era, absolute monster of a player. At least Modric and Eriksen got their plaudits, Dembele seemed to just past most people by for some reason.

But modric never scores or creates is the shite that used to be said back to me.
My best mate is a pool fan and went to game where we beat them 2-0 in 2011 with goals from VDV and modric and he said modric was best player he's seen live. I knew then I chose my best mate well.

Would be amazing to bring eriksen back, him and Deki in the same team has so much football intelligence..them two feeding Kane and son would be incredible

I would agree with all of the above. But if Conte wants him he must have a plan. He is not going to waste a squad place on the basis that he has no plan and doesn’t think he can incorporate him into 30-40 games a season to make a difference.
Absolutely, I just hope our fans don't go on a collective witch hunt against him again.

My interpretation of what happened was that Eriksen was pretty open and clear with his career plan. As a youngster he played for Ajax knowing they are excellent with youth development, he'd then play for a good Prem side and develop further and then play for an elite club in his prime.

He was very good for us but at a crucial time when he was hoping for an elite club would come in for him, Barcelona chose Coutinho over him, then he got a stomach injury and it took a while to get into shape. After that he seemed to struggle to find the motivation as his heart was set on joining the elite.

But times change. He's not motivated with that sort of ambition now, he's older and had a horrendous health scare. My guess is he just wants to enjoy a few more years of a football career and get as much as he can out of it.

I understand many were disappointed in his form in the last year or so of his time with us and in true internet fashion this came out in various ways from different people from mild disappointment to apathy to extreme anger.

Personally, I'd already forgiven him by the time he moved to Inter so have no problems at all with him coming back.

I wonder if he remembers those fans who gave him so much shit. I remember him mentioning them. Might make a difference to whether he returns or not.

I doubt it would be the defining factor, ultimately I think the most important thing for CE is game time.

Just my onions though

It's not groundbreaking but early doors we were very confident, then it went very quiet so I presumed it was dead, and then over the last week it's picked up again. I would now be shocked if he didn't sign for us.

Looks like Eriksen, Spence, LCB, CM & S will be the 5 coming in on top of the two we've brought in already. Then I wouldn't be surprised if we brought another 1/2 in depending on sales.

From the Bissouma Times article:

Tottenham are quietly confident of securing Christian Eriksen’s return as a free agent after the midfielder’s short-term deal at Brentford

There will be no shit for Eriksen if he puts in the effort . It seems to have been forgotten that Eriksen stopped doing that in his last year with us . People were accurately calling him out at the time as his head was elsewhere .

He's had a good spell at Brentford and knows Conte so would be a great addition to the squad imo.

Brentford fans seem to think they have ITK that he has signed a 2 year extension...They also suggest we don't need him !!

Eriksen's final performances for us were no worse than what Kane delivered at the start of the season.
When someone is mentally clocked out, they just can't perform at top level. As long as this is where he want to be now there won't be an issue.
Fans got onboard the Kane train again, they'll sail with the Eriksen boat as well.

Title winning squad is shaping up!
