Thought Dempsey has been good for a couple matches now. Being American I see him a bunch for the national team and while I haven't liked him much up until now I am really starting to like his passing in the final third and his ability to draw fouls and put us in good set piece situations. Is he Modric or VDV, no way but few in this world are so I will cheer for him and hope for the best.

While I would be more than happy to upgrade him I feel like he is a fantastic squad player to have, fills multiple roles for us and chips in with goals and assists when needed. Not a superstar but someone we need on the squad. Have liked him much better than Siggy if I am being honest as well.

In case anyone hasn't seen the clip it makes me laugh so I thought I would add it if anyone hasn't seen it.

he's got decent footwork and good at getting on the end of things.
he gets muscled off the ball too easily.
he's also very predictable.
Nothing we don't know already. He can't play alone; needs to be fed. With Dembele/Bale playing he can do alot of damage.

That is a great point about playing with Dembele and Bale, something he hasn't done much of this year. Don't have the stats in front of me but I would guess the three of them have played less than 2 or 3 games together.

Another poster in this thread said something that makes sense to me as well, that Dempsey will feed on scraps and Bale and Ade will give him those I believe. Dempsey will come in late after an attack has already developed and tap in a rebound or a mistake from the defense by not clearing the ball properly. This is not a bad option to have but we just need lots of different options and ways to score goals.

Dempsey is good at writing his name in capital letters. CLINT.

Always brings a chuckle.

Its standard stuff. When Ade/Bale work the channels Defoe goes in near post Dempsey makes a late run. You need a few players to make the box-runs because as long as someone touches the ball somethings gonna happen.

Indeed, who'd have thought it?:)
I really don't understand the hate it's not like he played for chelsea, is it just because he's not Rafa van der Vaart or something?
I don't care if a player played for Chelsea, Arsenal, whoever... send me them if they are quality. You can't say you wouldn't take Mata, Oscar, Hazard, Walcott, Cazorla, etc...

Me neither but its normally a good enough reason for most supporters.

You're really listing Walcott with the likes of Mata, Hazard and Cazorla?

Yikes.

I don't really know what people were expecting from him. Maybe some folk's expectations were too high?

I wasn't overly enamoured with his signing to be honest, apart from the fact that we nicked him from the Pool, but he's really beginning to grow on me.
He may not be subtle, silky or magical but I like his attitude and the cut of his jib! He works hard and shows the fighting spirit that we sometimes lack.
I thought that he showed some good control, vision and touches last night and I like him better than I thought I would.

I like Clint and I'm happy he plays for us.
There, I said it.

Partially.
It's like an equation:

[Perceived to be replacing very good and very popular player <PLUS> Natural tendency to not actually give player time to settle, even though he is coming into a team in transition and being asked to play an accustomed role <OVER> rational argument] <MULTIPLIED BY> Inverse quotidian of team success (y)

You left out the part that he's American, generally something that costs players points; at least initially.

Give him a run of play with Adebayor, Dembele, Bale, and Lennon all healthy and in form at the same time; he will score goals. His attitude will be helpful in the long run as well.

The bottom line is he came in with no preseason, was asked to play a position that he was not used to, and he's not had a chance to play consistently with the 2 playmakers we have who would bring the best out of him (Adebayor and Dembele). Yet he's still managed to score some goals for us and has been rounding into form. Like the rest of the team, it will take some time and adjustments, but the way things stand he's more likely to be successful at Spurs that a failure.

These two articles I think also make good points.

Where he talks about settling in and adjusting tactically. Note the extra time he seems to be spending to make sure he understands what AVB once. That is the type of detail work that will pay off big as the season goes on.

Where the Blog talks about the best way to use him and shows how he's adjusted to his new role in recent games.

Both are interesting reads.

In the final third where he has no time to think and has to react immediately with a pass or shot he's useful, because he has a decent pass and shot.

Any deeper than that and he gets confused, dallied on the ball, makes poor decisions and doesn't always know which direction he should be facing,

A decent option as he can effect things high up the pitch, but man does he slow out play down if he's in possession anywhere further than five yards from the opposition area.

That we signed him for £6m when Fulham replaced him with £5m Berba continues to be the biggest regret of the summer.

Still, he has his use and I can live with him as an option.

Aside from that, did nobody else notice his reaction to coming off v PAO? He remonstrated with avb and was stood on the touch line for a couple of minutes debating his substitution, despite the fact that just before coming off her gave up when tracking his man and they therefore had a free run at Naughton down the left.

That's not true.

AVB was giving him instructions even though he just came off.

He wasn't remonstrating at all.

Maybe I'm mistaken but he clearly threw his hands down as he was coming off.

Why would you give instructions to someone who is not playing?

Have you just been sarcastic and I've missed it?

I've been surprised nobody has mentioned it. Maybe I've got it wrong.

BBLG, I read it the same as WWTP. I have noticed AVB doing this previously, most notably with Tom Carroll during the tour of the states, where he gave all the players a pat on the back or a hand shake and then stood with Carroll in the semi-circle for about five minutes , pointing to different parts of the pitch and talking. I took it is was something he did, like advice/guidance/instructions for the future while still fresh in both minds.
I could be wrong. I never noticed Dempsey doing anything prior to their talking that looked like him having a strop (not saying he didn't, just didn't notice it). Dempsey looked attentive and respectful. I thought it was a positive thing, like I did when I saw him instructing Carroll.

He's a Yank!

SP dons his pointy Transylvanian peasant hat, arms himself with two-pronged pitchfork, and ignites a flaming torch: Let's march to Castle Yankula and rid the earth of this pestilence forever! :blackalien:

Ah okay I guess I misread it. Good. I sit above there so from my view their backs were to me and avb look animated.

I kinda like it when a player is pissed off at being subbed.
Not in a Ghaly type of way but in a still wanting to be on the pitch for the team, type of way.
