Not sure how relevant it is in the grand scheme of things, but Galaxy just drafted a right sided midfielder.

The plot thickens?

New quotes from Harry:

"To do [until 10 February] would be a waste of time because, by the time David got fit, it would be a couple of weeks and suddenly you'd be into February," Redknapp said ahead of the White Hart Lane meeting against Beckham's former employers

"I would have liked him to play, if he could have come to the end of the season it would have been great. I didn't know it was only going to be two months at best.

"When it was mentioned, I thought 'yeah, to the end of the season it would be good'. Then, suddenly two months becomes a month, and only if we got permission.

"By the time he's fit, just to throw him in for three or four games would be difficult."

Those quotes sounds to me like Redknapp sending Galaxy a message that either the lad signs until May or Camp Beckham gets angry at squeaky's inability to play.

I think it goes without saying that Beckham himself really wants to play so that he still have a shred of a chance with Capello.

One thing is certain and that is that Galaxy has proven to be the worst ever career move for Beckham. Sure, the money made it worthwhile, but Becks, being who he is seems to consider his career a priority and in that respect he has unquestionably shot himself in the foot.

Depends how he approached it.

He is someone who wants to have a legacy in the game. How much did the world know/care about MLS before he went there? How many Thierry Henry's played in it? Any future success and growth of MLS will have the footprint of Beckham behind it.

A decent legacy even if it came at the cost of less exposure for him internationally and fewer medals than if he'd stayed at one of Europe's biggest clubs.

I don't think the likes of Pele, Best and Bobby Moore are remembered for their time in the US though

To fans of the NASL (predecessor to MLS), people who weren't exposed to them in their prime like many of the fans living in the US in the 70's/80's, that could well be the case. I'm sure there are players who have never played in the UK that are amongst the most gifted in the world, yet they'll only be remembered on the international stage if you don't happen to follow their antics for their club.

Remember, back when them legends signed contracts to play in the US there was no satellite TV or t'interwebb and virtually no interest in this peculiar English game at all in North America.

Yep. That league died in the 80s/90s. The current incarnation is a different beast and Beckham's influence - albeit limited in terms of on-the-pitch efforts - will be a lasting legacy.

Which I would imagine is why he took the strange career move, albeit the cash would have proved fairly convincing, too.

I guess we'd have to see how it copes once he hangs up his golden balls. I don't know enough about the league to say whether or not it is sustainable without the odd superstar.

The attendances seem strong enough and fans now 'get' football a bit more, from friends who have visited. I am sure that it would have found its footing anyway and that Beckham had very little tangible impact on the fact that MLS is growing, but sometimes you need a 'brand' to leverage. And seeing as getting Man Utd, Barca or AC Milan to join the league, his is about the strongest possible. His work was done as soon as he signed and stepped foot onto the pitch.
