Which if he was a success would end up being paid off in Champion's League payments. Didn't we get £60m when we qualified last time? I'm not saying to throw everything at him, you just need to spend money to make money.

Those wages are a lot less than I thought they'd be tbh, if we're offering Bale £130k a week it means it's in our criteria.

Those wages, are probably post-tax. Villa is top 30 highest paid players in the world.

But let's say it cost us 30 million (wages and fee) to get him for 3 years. And we get CL next year. And we do get 60 million for it.

If we don't make it the next year (like last time) then we've spend essentially half of our windfall on one player as by the time we realize we're not making it back, he's 34 and worthless on the market.

It becomes tricky.

And I love Villa and would love to have him. Way more than Leandro. I'm just trying to look at this in a way I think Levy might look at it.

Doesn't make me right.

How much does the tax affect it in Spain?

It's a big big risk, and if we don't sign him I won't be distraught. But I'd like to think we don't sign Villa it's because we can't afford him, not because we've decided against it.

It is a risk because of his age and injuries, but at some point Levy's got to back AVB's judgement, and if he thinks that Villa's class is still there it's a no-brainer

Klinsmann joined Spurs at 30 and look at the impact he made! Crazy to even question signing David Villa if available. 30? Players play at a higher level for longer these days. SIGN. HIM. UP.

Difference is Klinsmann never broke his leg or did his cruciate... There is risk.

Klinsmann is possibly my favourite all time spurs player for the fact his signing and the hyoe and excitement it brought turned me from a football hating 13 year old to football obsess almost immediately.

But when people talk about the impact he made lets be real, we got worse in the seasons after for years. Ffs we replaced him with Chris Bloody Armstrong and the goons went out and got Berkamp.
I guess football was different back then, only top spot got in the not too old Champions League and the F.A. Cup still mattered.
I'd say more of an impact would have been Edgar Davids tbh. When he came we got generally better and other than the dark days of Ramos, stayed top 4-5 ever since.

Hardly crazy. We don't even know what the terms are. The guy turns 32 3 1/2 months into the season & just come back from a career threatening injury.

£10m fee? 3 yr deal? £100k + a week? That's crazy

Even if he only gives us 1 or 2 years of high-quality play, it should still be enough to put this squad over the hump and get us into CL. That alone would be worth the £10m asking price.

Klinsmann also only cost £2m & it was before any Russian/Arab billionaire's had come out the woodwork and blew wages & agents fees into a different universe

Hardly. Here is a sum of my own, feel free to play about with forex rates but it still hold true €12,500,000 + £5,200,000 per annum = ℮ 20 goals per season + dramatically increased likelihood of Champions League football.

This is DAVID VILLA, he is scoring for Barcelona and only leaving because he is being pushed out wide and has very real issues with Lionel Messi.
He plays international football for the BEST side in the world and is in Del Bosque's Confederations Cup squad.

This is €12,500,000 worth spending even if he ends up being little more than a coach

Klinsmann also came back a couple of years older and was nowhere near as good.

Hasn't just come back, he returned in August 2012! Played most of the season as a sub and often out wide and still managed 15 goals. Better than what we've got and could well fire us into the Champions League, a class act!

Didn't he score 4 against Wimbledon which helped us survive that season?

I think we're past the time when we should be looking at survival. Villa would be a good signing but i would prefer to try and get a 22-24 year old striker.

This. This is important. He's fit now, yes there's a chance he could go out injured again but there's a chance any striker we sign could do his cruciates after the first kick of a ball in a Spurs shirt.

My problem with this is the wage factor. Genuinely think we'd buy him as long as it's not over about £15mil as he's a massive name for our club, but his wages are already higher than what we're proposing to give to Bale...

My point was not about the survival, it was regarding you saying he was nowhere near as good, he scored 9 in 15 for us that season. Look at Scholes and Giggs, both a fair bit older than Villa and still effective!

There's also the merchandise sales to factor in with a signing like Villa, that will help negate the costs plus being a name to help attract other potential targets.

Why can't we have both? A youngster and an old/ experienced head? Man U got Van Penis, who everyone said was getting old and injury prone, and look what happened there
