I'm not denying he'd be a could buy & put real pressure on Toby & Verts etc., but just suggesting it seems a little out of character for Levy to pay the kind of fee being suggested. It will be interesting if he does & I hope he follows it up with a couple more.
The market now requires Levy to step up in terms of paying bigger fees. If he doesn't then we'll be left behind.

I presume the deal will be in Euros and Daniel Levy will be hoping that the pound is a lot stronger against the Euro by the time he has to pay the next instalments.

Just in the past month, the pound has dropped almost 5% against the Euro which is equivalent to £2 million of this £40 million transfer fee.

It is not unexpected that Spurs would have held significant funds in Euros just to avoid this issue. Levy did it with the Bale money (paid in Euros and spent it in the same currency).

"Similarly, English clubs with Champions League revenue or other pots of euros will sometimes sit on the money with an eye to spend it later, on euro-based deals."

Uncle Joe made his billions trading currency lads, safe to say we know what we're doing concerning this.

You can say he might be second choice, but if you consider our first XI is probably something like

---------------------Lloris----------------------
---------------Dier--Toby--Verts-----------
Tripper--Wanyama--Dembele--Rose
------------Eriksen--Alli--Son---------------
-----------------------Kane---------------------

If ANY of Dier, Toby, Verts or Wanyama gets injured, Sanchez would most likely step in. That's four positions in the XI.

This isn't even taking into account the fact that Sanchez may well take Dier's place at CB.

Plus it's a squad game...

Tottenham agree deal in principle with Ajax for £42m Davinson Sanchez

The 21-year-old told the Dutch club he wanted to leave on Monday

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on their first signing of the summer after agreeing a deal in principle with Ajax to sign Davinson Sanchez.

Spurs finally made a breakthrough on Thursday afternoon for a deal for the Colombian centre-back. They will pay £28m for Sanchez as well as a potential extra £14m in add-ons. The only disagreement between Tottenham and Ajax remains the timing of the payments, with Ajax trying on Thursday to speed up the process faster than was initially planned.

Sanchez told Ajax on Monday that he wanted to join Spurs even though the club offered him a bumper new deal to keep him in Amsterdam. With a deal between the two clubs getting closer this week, Sanchez was withdrawn from Ajax’s squad for their Europa League play-off game against Rosenborg on Thursday evening.

The 21-year-old Sanchez had been a target for Real Madrid and Barcelona last year but he will be playing for Spurs this season, providing competition for two other former Ajax players Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld at centre-back.

I'm with you. Levy has always been tight-fisted with the cash, but I think he understands that this sort of expenditure was necessary. If we're not going to pay market wages, we have to send the signal to the players (and manager) that we're committed to winning (and getting the players to help us do that). If we brought in a bunch of N'Players this window and we fail to win anything, It would not be out of the realm of possibility that players start to look elsewhere. Levy knows he has caught lightening in the bottle with his manager and the current roster of players. With the new stadium and the future looking bright, he knows he needs to push the envelope. I am firmly convinced that he will be handing out new contracts at the end of the season once we know that we're in to the new stadium.

It's actually mad that we're going to probably sign him. Incredible talent.

Ajax's cultivating of talent is surely second to none? Definitely my second favourite club, especially considering I fucking hate Feyenoord

Generally agreed on Ajax. But in Sanchez case, he wasn't their academy product & has been on their books only for a year now - While he has improved in Ajax, criticism from Ajax fans is he isn't a good ball player.

But, agree on his potential. His physicality, pace & being just a natural defender, means he will be a hit in PL. Our CBs in general lack pace, so in that sense he compliments them well, especially when playing in a back3.

Absolutely delighted we are about to land him.

One minor change I'd make is this:
------------------Lloris--Vorm--------------------
---------------Dier--Toby--Verts-----------
Tripper--Wanyama--Dembele--Rose
------------Eriksen--Alli--Son---------------
-----------------------Kane---------------------

Much safer with 2 keepers.

Still see reports that suggest RMadrid are considering getting involved, so if we're going to do it we need to get it done quickly!
