Not so sure. No new contract with Toby, Dier being chased by Manu, Rose not happy. Seems like defence, which is also the springboard of our attacking, is a little thin in terms of quality depth
Indeed. We've got a fair amount of CMs. We also have quite a few options for AMs. Where we are light is in defence and in lack of a third and very different option way up front.

I think this is a great signing. No less because of the Wembley factor. I was worried that selling Walker might hurt us for recovery pace in defence. However having a pacey centre back to recover when opposition counter (which more and more teams are doing against us) will make a big difference. I think we will go 3 at the back a lot this season now with Sanchez possibly at centre with Toby right and Jan left of him. I can see some King-esque recovery tackles in the making from this kid (ala King on Robben).

I wonder if signing a right back becomes less important now. We're running out of time on that one and we'll only sign someone who is a clear improvement on what we have. If we go 3 at the back however it really would help KWP. His biggest problem has been where he has been caught upfield and left out of position at get back. Having a right centre back come over on that side will help him out. Same for the other side particularly with Davies who isn't the quickest.

If you had to pick holes in what was the best defence last season you would have to say pace on the counter and at times set pieces. The pace on the bigger Wembley pitch could be more of an issue this season. Then you factor in having an extra centre back with strength in the air for defending set pieces. I think this signing is a lot bigger than people realize.

I'm glad we're signing him but it's a hell of a lot of money for a prospect. Signed for £4m, one season in Holland, sold for circa €40m. Remember Janssen? played village football, one good season, sold for £18m and he's way out of his depth. Hopefully Sanchez has the quality to make the step up but the amount of money we're paying for him after one season is absurd, inflated market or not.

Agree with this, but it would be Sanchez right, Toby central imo.

I admit to not knowing who Sanchez was until two weeks. Since then I have watched every clip I can find of him and I must say he looks like he has the ability to become one of the world's top defenders. His speed and recovery are incredible. A fantastic addition to line up.

With regards contracts...at least one(and I'm lead to believe there are others) agent has been told that the club wants to bring in the incomings before discussions for improved contracts start. If we start shelling out 20-30k pay rises, the money incoming players agents will demand will increase significantly as well.

My mates opinion is that Rose might not have been on that list due to hardly playing since his last pay rise, which is why he has spoken out. As I say though the Rose bit is not ITK and is only an educated guess on my sources end.

We are not paying £40m straight out though are we? A lot of the fee depends on his performance.

Possibly, but I don't know enough about this kid yet. I was thinking more in the sense of having the pacey centre back as the central defender to make recovery challenges. That way he gets across to cover either side particularly if we play a side with a quick right forward.

Signed Alli for £5m from MK Dons, had one great season and was suddenly worth a lot more than that.

I think this kid looks like the real deal and has all the attributes to make it in the Premier League. Janssen on the other hand was bit more of a risk. Not least because he isn't a quick powerful athlete.

Very true re Alli and I hope Sanchez lives up to his price tag. I'm not against signing him just odd that we're breaking our record on a position we're not desperate for. Plus we've had several bits of ITK prior to our interest in Sanchez that we'll be offering our existing players a pay rise so with regard to Toby I'd expect us to be making him an improved and competitive offer when the window closes.

I'd love Janssen to be a be hit but other than good strength he's extremely slow, looks unfit and doesn't have the required quick thinking to react to the interplay between the likes of Eriksen, Kane and Alli.

Makes sense, these contract renewals are key but surely they can wait until September, seems we have our hands full with transfers right now!

Janssen might have quick enoungh thinking but lack quick enough feet. i would love janssen make it here, he's still young and works hard with a good attitude. it would be interesting if we have a decent quick forward to play alongside with him when HK is out of action.

Why are Spurs signing Sanchez from Ajax? I've never heard of him or that club. What have they ever won? Why aren't they signing Ben Gibson?

his pace on the right would help out Trips immensely. If Trips is caught up field (if!), then Sanchez can get back and cover, and Dier can drop into the three.

Very interesting insight and totally makes sense, thanks for that Trix. Regardless of whether Rose was on the list in the first place, I really hope we don't give him any pay rise at all and flog him for an inflated fee next summer. In the meantime, he gets to watch lots of his more deserving team mates who have behaved professionally and respectfully get bumper pay rises.
