his pace on the right would help out Trips immensely. If Trips is caught up field (if!), then Sanchez can get back and cover, and Dier can drop into the three.
You could say the same for helping out Davies on the other side though. I'm not sure Dier (or Wanyama) would need to drop into the three. The other center backs would shift across.

No, people complain when we spend a record amount on a centre back when a) we're not short of centre backs and b) we're desperate for pace up front. Sanchez will hopefully be a very good signing but a new centre back was the least of our priorities this window.

Not short of centre backs? We have 3.5 (when you consider the Dier plays more in midfield) for 2 or 3 positions, with AMs we have 5 internationals and 1 youth international, all with Prem experience, for 2/3 positions. I'm not saying I'm against attacking signing, I'd love a fast winger, but saying that we need more there than at CB is fundamentally incorrect.

Regarding desperation for pace up front, we did finish top scorers by some distance last season, had great goal returns from more than just Harry and scored in almost every match.

Lets not overlook what change 3 at the back could make to our attack either. When we went 3 at the back last season we saw more of Vertonghen and Alderweireld make runs forward. It adds a new dynamic to the attack. We don't see that as often when there's only 2 at the back. Having 3 gives a bit more license to roam forward knowing you still have 2 centre backs. In Sanchez we're getting another player who looks like he can come out from the back. All 3 will be capable of coming forward which makes it difficult for the opposition to know what to expect.

It's funny because the more I think about it the more I still want Foyth as extra cover back there.

Add to that, when you play three at the back, it necessitates playing one less attacking midfielder. The whole squad depth thing has been a massive misnomer all along.

I don't think you are understanding quite how far up the pitch Trips has been caught :D

Signing this guy for £42m or whatever is a great statement of intent and shows a departure from the £26-£30m ceiling of the last few windows. Solidifying our options in defence is very smart as it's key to our goal difference and the scouting team (which I believe has been overhauled this year) has done a great job in identifying Foyth and Sanchez. I'm hoping we'll be able to say the same about the WF position if and when we secure someone. It's equally as important - and an area we've had a blind spot for the last few years. Alli was bought as a box-to-box midfielder, Eriksen a 10, and Son's first season he couldn't control a ball very well. It's through hard work and a bit of luck they've all come as good as they have, and buying Njie, Nkoudou, Janssen and Sissoko, not to mention Onomah trying to play AM has done us no favours.

Fingers crossed they're a worldy, whomever they may be.

odds of this being announced today?

if not, do we usually make announcements over the weekend? It's been so long since we signed someone I can't remember.

If actually happening you'd like to think they'd get it done & have him on the pitch on Sun.

Very interesting insight and totally makes sense, thanks for that Trix. Regardless of whether Rose was on the list in the first place, I really hope we don't give him any pay rise at all and flog him for an inflated fee next summer. In the meantime, he gets to watch lots of his more deserving team mates who have behaved professionally and respectfully get bumper pay rises.
You really want to force him out? I'd rather have a fit and happy DR flying down the wing.

#thfc Ajax's Marcel Keizer doing press conference now: "It seems that Sanchez leaves, although it is not yet final."

He was never going to start on Sunday, even if he signed today he'd still only have had 2 days of training before the game
